They had finally let her out, and even if the destination was only the small park across the road, it was still something. The park was, in all honesty, a rather boring place. It consisted of three trees, some grass, a pond, one depressed looking duck and a wooden bench. No doubt placed there by some optimistic person thinking staring at a pond with a duck in it would lighten peoples hearts.

It didn't, but Ruriska wasn't exactly noticing much of the duck. She was more entranced by the neon green thing with the squiggly arms as it waddled across the surface of the pond. Apparently physical rules didn't apply to it, which explained the appearing through walls problem, but until Ruri saw something walking across water, it didn't quite connect.

The hallucination shuffled its way over to the bench and sat at her feet, staring morosely up at her. "What? You want more chips? But we ran out yesterday." Not that it could actually eat, but for some reason it liked to sit on anything edible and well, yes... just sit there. Then it would begin dancing again, or spinning, and generally just giving Ruriska a headache.

"Stop staring. It's not polite."

'It's fine. It's FINE. I'm NOT seeing things. I'm NOT.'

Apathetic had never had a heart-attack before, but he was almost sure that he'd been working himself into one for the past week or so. He'd gotten the bedrest he was supposed to drank plenty of water to stay hydrated, stayed out of the sun, stayed in the sun... But those stupid flashes of light and color wouldn't leave him alone! If nothing else, it actually got worse, and he'd stopped taking the medication for a day or so...

Until he'd received a notice by mail, the very next day, reminding him that to stop his court-appointed medication would be resultant in a swift kick towards jail-time. He hadn't been happy about it, but he'd taken the pills that day, and the day after, and so on, rationalizing that they'd probably just make him take them in jail, too, and the last thing he needed was to be in jail with drugs in his system. Of course, the symptoms came back with a vengeance, and the 'flashes' had resolved themselves into...

No. He wasn't going to think about it. They were gone for the moment, and he was taking a nice, peaceful stroll through the park, and he would be fine.

Yes.

And then he glimpsed a small, neon-green thing walking across the pond and making a seamless transference onto land, and he blinked reflexively.

"Oh dear god," he muttered under his breath, closing his eyes and rubbing them. "They're multiplying."

It wiggled one arm and then the other, still staring and then quite deliberately (Ruri thought it was deliberate but that could easily be debated) put one of those squiggly arms through her leg. The young woman squealed, pulled her legs up onto the bench and glared at her neon green friend."Don't do that! You know I don't like that."

Unlike some of the other patients, Ruriska had taken to hallucinations likes a fish to water. Because she could see it, it was real... to some extent, and thus could be yelled at and talked to as if one was talking to a dog or cat. Or something like that. It continued to stare, jiggling up and down. "And don't you giggle at me."

In hope that ignoring it would make it go away or at least behave, she turned her face away... only to find she had company. "Oh... hello." It was one thing to yell at a hallucination, but when other people were around. Oh well, she was already on pills anyway, apparently crazy. One more person thinking she was insane wouldn't really matter, because she knew it wans't true.

"Uh... What?" Apathetic, eyes snapping open, realized that whether or not that... green thing was real, or actual, or whatever, the girl at least was, and he should probably answer. Well, something a little more coherent than what he'd just said.

"Um... Hi." Okay, so it wasn't much, but he was a little preoccupied. Apparently she could see the green thing, which meant that it might exist... unless, of course, it didn't. It might be a mass hallucination, after all. He opened his mouth to ask her about it, but only got as far as "Do you see... ?" before his jaw snapped shut again. 'Do you see a little green transparent thing in front of you?' was a line he never wanted to hear himself say.

Instead, he grinned, his easy demeanor ruined slightly by a brief flick of his eyes towards the thing on the ground, and he waved his hand dismissively as he said, "Oh, never mind. I was just wondering if the... duck looked a little depressed to you." Out-of-nowhere perhaps, but (marginally) less crazy-sounding.

Continuing to keep her face averted from the neon green thing, Ruri smiled rather self-consciously at Apathetic. Truthfully, she wasn't all that great with people. Good at watching them yes. But the skill of conversation had eluded her. Still, he didn't seem all that good at it either. In any case, Ruri did what she did best and sat on the bench with her knees pressed against her chest and stared.

"Hmm...?" Making a polite noise she thought was appropriate when he began his question, she began to get the impression that he was a little put out. A little nervous? Something wasn’' quite right. Ruri ignored it for the moment, especially when the question was asked. A rather unexpected question.

She turned her head to stare at the duck. It did look, somewhat morose. "Um... I guess... I guess it does." She eventually stammered out and then grinned. "Maybe because Nexi was pretending to eat its head before." Giggling, she looked down at the sullen green hallucination; addressing it at easily one would talk to a best friend. "Isn't that right? ... Oh wait, I'm still annoyed with you."

"'Nexi'"? Apathetic blinked, then processed the entirety of the conversation, then blinked again. It really seemed to be the only reaction appropriate to this situation, aside from actually turning on his heel and walking away from this potential gate of madness, and common courtesy prevented him from doing so. He had, after all, intiated this conversation... sort of... and it behooved him to continue it, or at least bring it to a proper close.

"Is that your... uh... pet?" he asked, hoping for a non-prescription answer. "A dog... A cat..." '... A neon-green rutabega... ?' he added mentally, although he was careful not to say such a thing out loud. Unlike the previous flashes of color he'd been seeing, this thing was just sitting there, and it did look like some odd sort of root-vegetable. 'Please let her say it was a cat...' he thought.

Because, although she seemed nice enough, if it wasn't for the behooving of common courtesy, boy, there would've been some serious walking away.

Kinu's Fangirl

Ruriska had just come to the conclusion that she was insane. She looked sadly down at 'Nexi', who seemed content to simply sit there and stare off into space. Although the signs had been there, Ruri had never actually admitted the fact that she might be a little crazy. But now it seemed, the proof was in the putty. Or whatever that ridiculous saying was. This nice man couldn't see a neon green thing and she could.

What a bummer. Suddenly she was feeling a bit like that duck looked. "Well... no. Not exactly." She let down her legs to sit properly and fiddled with a nearby leaf. "Um... it is... er... you can't see it can you? Damn. That kinda sucks. The green thing, at my feet... it... oh forget it, I'm not supposed to be speaking with people anyway."

"Um... Shoot." Well, this was going well. He had confirmation that the green thing existed, and also he'd make this woman as depressed at that duck seemed to be. Life was difficult, and especially as of late.

"Look, I didn't mean to offend you or anything," he began apologetically, "but it's just that I've been taking these meds lately, and I dunno, maybe they're just not sitting well with me... I've been having these weird, uh, well, suffice to say I probably need to get my eyes checked, and I just wanted to know if you could see that green thing at your feet. Which is apparently a Nexi. Um.

"Yeah... That's pretty much it. I'm... gonna go now, before I say anything else... Sorry to disturb you, er, miss." And he took a last look at the green thing, shaking his head and not sure whether or not he should be depressed or reassured, before her final words sank in.

"Did you just say you're not supposed to... ?"

And then, rising out of the damp earth like a trio of tied-dyed ghosts, appeared the little bizarre things he'd been seeing early, and the largest one seemed to wiggle a tentacle-like 'arm' in Apathetic's direction. The other two, smaller than the first, joined in, giggling in tinny little voices, and Apathetic paled.

'Oh no, it's starting up again... !'

Meds? A few things were starting to make sense; like that maybe they weren't so different after all. Staring at him as he babbled, Ruri eventually began to smile. From what she could pick from his nervous, hurried speech, he could see Nexi. Which meant, she wasn't insane. That was a relief. A big relief. Ruri wasn't sure being insane would be very good for her lifestyle.

Wait a second. "Oh no... don't go...!” The one person who could prove she wasn't as crazy as a fruit bat was about to walk away, never to be seen again. Ruri was close to getting up and running after him when three... things... popped up out of the ground, leaving a stunned silence on Ruriska's part.

So, not only could he see Nexi, he had some of his own. "Oh... they're kind of cute." Grinning, Ruri decided they were going to be great friends. "Nexi is his name, and also Nex. He's Nex when I'm annoyed. Well... he's more of an it... I don't think green squiggle things have genders. Are you an 'it' Nexi?"

Nexi, having been addressed and now having competition from three others, got up on two skinny legs and began to dance. "Oh, there he goes again. I'm Ruriska by the way." Now she had a subject in common, talking wasn't all that hard.

Apathetic stared. It wasn't very polite, but he couldn't really help himself; he'd been driving himself... He didn't want to use the word crazy, but... for the past week, and here this girl not only has a green thing with a name, but she can see the things that he's been having problems with! And she didn't seem anywhere near as freaked-out as he'd been when he'd first realized they seemed to be sentient...

Finally managing to assemble a semi-coherent sentence in his head, "I'm... Apathetic, actually, no joke, but you can call me Apathy. Or Ap, or Apa... Whatever's easiest. Listen, aren't you at least a little bothered that you can see these little, uh... gremlin-type things?"

The little rainbow things, far from seeming upset at being referred to as 'gremlin-type things,' seemed to giggle even harder, bouncing up on down on what would be the balls of their heels, assuming they had actual feet. Apparently easily bored, they turned their attention to the green vegetable, which had begun to dance; deciding, apparently, that it looked like fun, the rainbow-gremlins linked hands and tentacles, skipping over to 'Nexi' and beginning to dance around it in a circle. Apathetic fought the urge to run.

"Because... and I don't know about you, but I never had this kind of problem before I started the medication. And I can't go off it, or they'll throw me in jail... And are you sure this isn't some kind of mass hallucination?" Which would be the better option? But Apathy knew, somewhere deep down, that the little glowy things were real enough, however much that clashed with his desired world-view...

"... You named it?"

Kinu's Fangirl

"Fascinating name. I will call you Apathy. It's a good word." Ruriska mulled over that for a moment or two before nodding. "You can call me Ruri. Or Ru. I think. Nobody had given me a nickname before.”"Rather sad really, besides those two kids in grade school, she hadn't had any friends at all. Not that she really minded. Friends had a habit of getting in the way of things.

"No. It doesn't bother me." Ruri quirked an eyebrow and gave him an incredulous look, as if she couldn't quite understand why he was even asking such a silly question. "Should it?" So, gremlin type things and a green squiggly thing. It was an odd bunch.

As she watched them they began to circle Nexi, causing her to giggle. It was good they were getting along well. Nexi seemed to be enjoying it, his dancing becoming faster until he was a blur of green arms and legs. At that point Ruri looked away, knowing that if she kept staring it was bound to give her a headache, or empty out her breakfast.

"Oh, I didn't either. But since he's here now I can't do much about it, right? Besides, I'm not allowed to do anything anymore. Nexi keeps me amused." She smiled, completely at ease with the situation. To her, it was strangely natural. "Jail? They nearly sent me there. Then they put me on those icky pills. Now... I'm stuck here..." She motioned to the apartment block across the road with one hand. "And no, I don't think it is."

Mass hallucination? No way.

Another one of those looks was given to Apathy. "Of course I did. I do live with it every day, so I may as well give it a name."

"Huh. I suppose, if you put it that way..."

Apathetic was a bit incredulous himself, but he kind of thought there was some reasoning behind it-- After all, most people would be a little bothered if they suddenly started hallucinating... right? And even moreso if it turned out they weren't really hallucinations, but somehow real in their own right, right? Yes, exactly what he'd done. So... Why wasn't this bothering her?

Oh well. Maybe she just adapted better to weird things like this. Apathy wouldn't be surprised if that were the case, so maybe that issue, at least was settled.

So what about the little... whatever-they-weres? The... Nexi looked like a green blur, and Apathetic started feeling a bit dizzy as it spun in one direction and the gremlins danced in the other, and he dimly wondered if they were doing it on purpose. They suddenly broke from the circle, spinning outward and waving their arms/tentacles like little kids, wobbling somewhat unsteadily out into a radius around Nexi, and Apathy shook his head. Bizarre.

"So... Every day, huh?" He put his hands in his pockets, watching the rainbow-gremlins wobble across the grass. "These... things don't hang around like that. They tend to come and go, pop up at bad times... They showed up when I was at work, and I nearly plowed into a customer trying to look over my shoulder." He ran a hand through his hair as one of them stumbled through his shoe, starting a giggle-fest that all three joined in on. "And, they keep doing that."

While not being exactly crazy, Ruri did have a few screws loose, a fact that would explain her current lack of worry over the strange hallucinations. Of course, when it had started she had freaked out a little, but when you were stuck around the thing 24/7 the shock factor wears off pretty quickly.

Nexi abruptly stopped dancing, flickered out of existence for a second and then appearing beside Ruriska on the seat, its wobbly legs flicking over the side of the seat and its arms waving above its head as it stared up at the sky. Though it didn't have much of an expression on its face, it did seem to be enjoying itself.

"Yeah, every day. I can't even have a shower by myself, he... er... it... just pops up and clings to the showerhead. It's kind of strange when the water goes right through him." Ruri gave Apathy a quirky smile. "I like them." They were, very cute. Especially with all the giggling.

"I... guess." Apathetic didn't necessarily dislike them, after a week or so to get used to them; they hadn't done anything to hurt him, after all, and he didn't think they would if they could. They were just kind of annoying sometimes, like little children, showing up when he least expected it, but at least they didn't seem malicious. He just hadn't really thought about whether or not he liked them, but he'd gotten used to them, somehow.

... That was kind of unnerving.

"I don't really think about it," he admitted, hands in his pockets as he watched the trio apparently chase each other around on the grass. "They just pop up when they shouldn't sometimes... Like when I'm concentrating. I was figuring bills last Thursday and they phased through my coffee-cup just when I was about to drink it. I spilled espresso all over my notebooks."

Apparently hearing themselves being talked about, the Rainbow-Gremlins - did they ever do anything seperately? - gamboled over to them, looked up, and struck some kind of pose, looking like a surreal preschooler-drawn Charlie's Angels. Apathy sighed, hanging his head a little.

"Also, they like to watch TV. If I leave it on something that catches their eye... or whatever... sometimes they let me work in peace. But they always pop up again."

There was a silence, and then Apathetic ventured to ask, "So... This medication. You figure it has something to do with it?"

Kinu's Fangirl

Invisible Dabbler

While Ruri watched, Nexi got up and pranced off the seat and onto the grass. There it stood, the strange neon creature unmoving. Ruri just couldn't understand it sometimes. But then again, if one could understand a hallucination they had to be fairly screwed.

At the image off those multi-coloured gremlins running through his coffee mug she chuckled, covering her laughter with a hand. It probably wasn't very funny to him and already he seemed a nervous wreck without her laughing at him. "I don't think Nexi is quite as active as yours. Nexi just likes to dance and turn up in strange places. At times he'll just float for hours, staring at one point in the wall."

Having had enough of whatever it was doing, Nexi wandered over to Apathetic stare at him and then simply lay out on the grass, one of his legs and half his head disappearing rather oddly into the soil.

The pills? Actually she'd never even thought that might be the case. Not once. "Really... you.. think so... I don't know... I wouldn't think that they would... give us stuff like that." The thought of it made her nervous, until she was wringing her hands together as she thought. "Well... it's not that bad really."
