[ABOUT:]
What games do most people think of when they hear the name "Konami?" Castlevania? Metal Gear? How about Goemon? No? Well, you're not alone.
While Western gamers are largely unfamiliar with the series, it's actually one of Konami's oldest franchises in Japan, having spawned a great number of games (including various cameos and spin-offs) since its debut in 1986. But if the games are so popular, then why aren't more of them released outside of Japan?
Cultural barriers, mostly. One of Ganbare Goemon/Mystical Ninja's biggest draws is its bizarre brand of Japanese humor. You'll find many oddities such as time-traveling nuns, bunny-obsessed shoguns, and suicidal sportsmen. There's also a great deal of anachronistic elements (such as giant robots) that really have no place in ancient Japan. Even if you're not a history or geography buff, it's hard not to be amused by the sheer absurdity of it all.
The games also boast excellent music, graphics, and gameplay that's often a mixture of platformers and RPGs with a da-da-dash of first-person battles with giant robots. Those curious enough to try the games were pleasantly surprised. Take it from me. wink
