12/08/04 - Journal Entry (Finally!)
I'm never going into the woods again. Ever. Why? Let me explain.
I was pissed off, and apparently it was showing, because my boss told me to take the rest of the day off, maybe take a nap and some Midol, and relax. Seeing as I hate my job, I agreed. So I started walking home, and calmed down a little, and that was cool, so I kept walking--right to the woods at the edge of town. At that point, I was feeling pretty good, and figured hey, what the hell, I could use the exercise anyway.
Big mistake. I wound up getting lost within like, a half hour or so. And, just to spite me, it starts raining. As I was wandering aimlessly through the woods, I came upon a rickety-looking old house. It looked kinda desolate, but cool nonetheless. I went up to it and knocked on the front door, hoping against hope that someone was inside and could tell me how to get back to civilization. Luckily, the door opened, and a woman answered. She gave me a once over, then smiled and invited me in.
I followed her into the house, dripping water onto the floor, and she led me into what looked to be the living room. She left the room for a moment, returning with a large towel. I took it gratefully, then wrapped it around myself and sat down. We spoke for awhile; I learned that the woman's name was CWL, and that she lived in the house alone except for her collection of rare and exotic animals. I hadn't seen any, but I had heard some odd noises...
At one point, I noticed a strange glow coming from the room CWL had disappeared into earlier. She noticed me staring over her shoulder at it, and turned to see what I was looking at before looking back at me.
"What is that?" I asked.
"Oh, that's a Windigo," she said, as if that would explain everything.
"Oh...uh, what's a Windigo?"
She proceeded to explain what a Windigo was, and I found myself entranced. They sounded awesome! As CWL spoke, the glow behind her grew brighter, and eventually started moving towards us. It got closer, and I noticed that it was just a ball of swirling red, black, and yellow light. It hovered around us, making a low humming noise, and my attention moved from CWL to it.
"This is a Windigo, then?" I said.
"Yep, this is a Windigo in the aura stage, the first stage. This one's name is Vangreth, and she's from the fire redou."
I held my hand out towards it, and it came closer. As it did, my mind filled with strange images. I saw Vangreth's aura, hovering over a decimated corpse--MY corpse. I didn't flinch; although CWL had told me what Windigos were capable of, I wouldn't believe it until I had seen it with my own eyes. The vision left, then, to be replaced by another one. It looked like a smiley-face emoticon, and I laughed.
"She likes you, I think," said CWL.
"Oh yeah? How can you tell?"
"Well, she hasn't eaten you yet!"
I looked at CWL then, blankly, trying to gauge whether she was serious or not. She certainly looked it, although she was still smiling. "You should get going," she said almost gently, "before it gets too dark."
My brow furrowed in confusion, and I looked towards the window. "But isn't it still--" I cut myself off as I saw that the rain had stopped. Still slightly confused, I nodded and stood. "Um...thanks for your hospitality, and the directions."
She nodded, and as I turned towards the door, she said, "Aren't you forgetting something?"
I looked behind me, only to see Vangreth hovering in my line of sight. I peered around her. "What, you mean...?"
"Yeah. You're the first person other than me who she's let walk out of here alive. That's got to count for something, right? Just take good care of her, and don't let her bring dinner home unless you like dealing with questions from the cops."
I stared at CWL for a minute before blinking. "Uhh...ok. Thanks, I think." With that, I turned and walked out, CWL calling after me, "And come by anytime! Maybe she'll run into the others!" With that, I walked out the door, following CWL's instructions on how to get out of the forest, Vangreth hovering behind me the whole way.
As we walked back into town, Vangreth sent me a thought. It was a sad emoticon, and she emitted a low hum, like the rumbling of a stomach. I stopped and turned towards her. "What, are you hungry?" The sad face turned into a happy one, and I sighed. "Well...go find someone to eat, but hurry up, and be careful not to get caught." She drifted off, disappearing into an alley.
A moment later, there was a scream, and a Vangreth's glow came out from the alley's mouth. Soon after, the aura reappeared by my side, making a clear noise like the humming of a tuning fork.
We eventually got to my house. I paused outside the door, turning to Vangreth. "Just two rules: Do NOT eat my kids or pets, and don't bring your food inside the house! I don't want to go through the trouble of hiding the body." Cue the smiley face.
