Trading FAQ!
All you need to know about trading!

Quote:
Orriginal post by Wolfie on Wed Jul 09, 2003

I've noticed that there are many new traders/auctioners who are new Gaians and who don't really understand the trading system. I guess most of us are aware of that the trading window was kind of confusing for the first time for us all and if you're really hasty...you can make mistakes. So I finally decided to make a Guide for the new ones.

Trading Pass
(added since not everyone read XxXDr4g0nXxX's carefully)
How to get it: Pay 500 gold in the Gambino Bank. It's a one time fee.

Why 500 gold?: It's to prohibit people to create new accounts just for the 400 gold you get in the beginning.

Do I need it?:It's a matter of opinion. Without it, you can receive items/gold, but you can't send. So trading items/gold with someone else would be impossible without a trading pass. If you're not interested in trading, then you don't need the pass.

So...where is Gambino???: To get to Gambino, just click on "Map" in the upper right corner then you should see this:
User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.
Just click on the orange arrow to get to Gambino...

The trading window

First of all, my best advice is patience. Think before you act.
Below is an example of how a trade window might look like:

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

A) This is your avatar, which indicates that the left side is your side. In this case, it's my avatar: Wolfie.

B) The avatar showing on the right side is the user you are trading with. This can be good to check if it's really the user you are gonna trade with. In this case, I'm gonna trade with Lighter.

C) The "Outgoing" window is what I'm (A) gonna send away to Lighter (B). Both items and gold are shown here. Remember: Items/gold shown here are what you give away.

D) In the "Incoming" window, you can see what the other side is gonna send to you. Just as your own window, both items and gold are shown here. Remember: Items/gold shown here are what you will receive.

1) Here is where you can edit the title of the trade. You can also leave it as it is, then the topic will be "Trade request from ****" (**** is for the user who started the trade. In this case, it'd be Wolfie)

2) To trade gold with another user, this is the button to click. Just enter the sum in the square and hit this button. And don't panic, nothing will be sent until you hit the "Confirm & Send Trade" button (no.5). Your amount (the gold you are sending away) will be shown on the "Outgoing" side (C).

3) If you've entered the wrong amount of gold or for any other reason want to edit the amount of gold entered, just hit the "Clear Gold" button (no.3).

4) Hitting this button will cancel the trade and you will have your items or gold returned (same for the other side). This button is important if you notice that there's something not correct with the trade.

5) This button is the last one you should hit. When hitting this button, the trade will be sent right away. So before hitting this button, do check that everything is alright.

6) Your items are your inventory. To send an item, click on the item then a small window with some text about the item will show. If that's the item to trade, click "OK", otherwise "Cancel". If you've added the wrong item, and would like to remove it from the Outgoing window (C), just click on the item inside the Outgoing window. biggrin

------- oOo -------

Trading Steps

If You are starting the trade:

1) You can start trades in 2 ways:

* Go to Gambino bank (On the Barton town map, click the orange arrow to get to Gambino, then hover over the lower right house, that's the bank)

* Clicking the trade button (see image beneath) will immediately lead you to the trading window.

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.
(I had to paint over the message and username...just in case that person doesn't want it here.... sweatdrop )

2) When in the trading window, add the items/gold that you are going to trade (for instructions of the trading window, read the section above).

3) When everything is clear, hit the "Confirm & Send Button".

4) Await for the other side to respond your trade. When he/she confirmed the trade, you'll have to opportunity to check if the other part have added correct items/gold. If you discover that anything is wrong, just click Cancel.

5) If you are the seller - Once the trade has been successfully completed, return to your auction thread to your first post. Click on edit. Change the title of your thread to read *closed.* This will indicate to other users that you have sold your item, and that they ought not to ask you about wanting to buy it anymore.

If You are the one receiving a trade:

1) Click the arrow bubble next to your avatar.

2) Be sure to check that everything is correct before confirming the trade. I believe that the admins already told that they won't help you get your stuff back if you've forgotten to check the trade carefully. If that happens, you got no one but yourself to blame... xp

3) Wait for the other part to confirm the trade for the 3rd time. Then you can check if you've gotten your stuff. To see if they've confirmed the 3rd time, just enter the bank, click on "Pending Trades". There you'll have the record of your on going trades (those will disappear as soon as the trade is finished)

So basically, there will always be 3 confirms. 2 for the one who started the trade, 1 for the one who responds to the trade. The best advice is still: be patience, check your trade before confirming.

------- oOo -------

Trading Ethics

Note: These are not rules, but what I think are good trading etiquette.

Auctioners:

* Start the bidding on a price that you would accept. To start an auction on 200 gold and then say: "I'm not accepting anything lower than 700 gold, since I can sell it in the store for 700" is not fair.

* Set a bidding time, e.g. "This auction will end in 5 hours". Since there's time on your post, it's easy to check when the auction will end. This makes it more fair for the bidders. Many auctioners wait until they get a price they're satisfied with. It is OK to set auctions for about 1 week in my opinion, though. Then the bidders know that the auction is running the whole week. As long as the bidders are aware of how long the auction is, it's OK.

* To accept PM bidding is really nasty too... stressed I've seen too many disappointed/mad bidders around...

* DO NOT try to auction off your item in someone else's thread. That's rude...REALLY RUDE! Start your own thread instead and pick up own customers...I mean bidders.... sweatdrop

Bidders:

* PM bidding is really evil! evil That way, the other bidders can't bid higher than the PM bidders. If you're paying more than anyone else, and no one can outbid you, why don't you post it in the thread instead??? Curse the PM bidders! stressed

* To suddenly lower your bid, just because someone else dropped from the auction is bad manner! evil If you're not ready to pay the entered amount, don't say you're offering it. And I'm not just talking about closed auctions, I mean on going auctions as well. This is not fair for the auctioners.

------- oOo -------

Advices

* Be patient. Take a good look on the trading window before confirming. Don't rush things.
* Don't worry that you'll get ripped off, if you are the one who started the trade, you have a second chance to check if the other side (the one trading with you) have given you the correct amount of gold or item (or both wink ). So CALM DOWN, you will have a chance to check the trade again. You won't loose anything. If there's anything wrong, the Cancel button (no.4) is there for your service 3nodding .
* Writing an own topic of the trade is usually better than to just leave it as "Trade request from ****". It'll make it easier for both yourself and the one who's trading with you to remember what the trade is about.

That's all for now. If anyone have advices, please PM me or post in this thread and I'll will add it in the Advice list. If you don't want your name here, tell me, otherwise I'll put your name next to the advice. 3nodding

Tips bellow is written by Legend *applause*

SELLERS

? Resell Price
Usually on most items you could sell them at the store and get a pretty hefty price. Check out this price before you start off your auction and end up getting a lower amount than what you would?ve gotten them by reselling them.

? Minimum Increment
It?s a good idea to state a minimum increment, the minimum amount of money people could add after each bid, so that you don?t get people winning by adding 1gold more than the previous leader.

? Time
Leave the auction open for a certain amount of time. Leave it up just enough so people who are interested will see it, but don?t leave it up too long or else a bidder or potential bidder finds a better deal else where.

? No PMs
Don?t take PMs during bids. Although you may get a good deal from people who PM you make sure they post their offer at your auction. Not taking PMs is proper etiquette for you as a seller and you may get someone to give a better deal.

? Don't Back Down
Don't back out of an auction because you know you wouldn't like the same to be done to you.

BUYERS

? Patience
Wait until the end to place a bid. If you bid too early someone would have enough time to make the gold to outbid you with.

? Updates
Check the first page for updates on an auction, incase the seller decides to place an auto-buy option, or states a change of time.

? Night Time Auctions
Naturally people sleep during the night, thus less people on Gaia, meaning you have a better shot of winning something if most people are asleep.

? Don't Back Down
Don't back out of an auction because you know you wouldn't like the same to be done to you.

The reason I decided top create this post is so incase someone has never done an auction before they could use this as reference. I'm also personally tired of people who don't know what they are doing when they offer something and don't end up keeping up there end of the bargain. If you know what I mean.

If you have any tips of your own to submit please leave me replies and I'll see if I could work them in!! If you want to criticize the tips already posted that's fine too. - Legend

Q&A written by Yitomic

This is to help answer question about the exchange and to supply helpful links to threads that hold information that will help you with the Exchange ways....... Enjoy 3nodding

~ Questions and Answers ~

Q. I want to sell an item from the store. How do I set the price?

A. There are two prices on store bought items. The "buy" price and the "resell" price. The "buy" price is what you pay for the item in the store. The "resell" price is what the store pays you for the item. Your best bet is to set your sell price for the item your selling in the exchange somewhere between the "buy" price and the "resell" price.

Q. Do Sticky threads need to be bumped?

A. Sticky threads do NOT need to be bumped becouse they are already on the very top of the page and will always stay there.

Q. What is a "bump"?

A. A "bump" is used in the Exchange to bring a thread to the top of the first page. Not many people look past the first page in the Exchange so people use these "bumps" to keep the thread in the line of sight.

Q. What does "1k" mean?

A. "1k" is short for 1,000gold. When ever a number ends with "k" without a space it means X,000gold (X being the number next to the "k" wink

Q. What is a "scam"?

A. A "scam" is when someone cheats someone else out of gold, items, or something else. Scamming is a banable offence.

Q. Why are some items worth more than others?

A. Some items like the Angelic and Nightmare Headbands are worth more than other items becouse they are more in demand with a low number of people willing to sell them for cheap.

Q. What is a Donation Letter?

A. A Donation Letter is a special item recieved for donating to Gaia with real money. Every month there is a different item recieved by donating to Gaia.

Q. Why does a Donation Item increase over time?

A. As new Donation Items comes out there is less of a chance of getting a past month item. As more Donation Letters are opened that makes the Letters more rare than the items so the letter will become more in value.

Q. What is a "trade pass"?

A. A "trade pass" is what will allow you to buy or trade items and gold with another user. You do not need a "trade pass" to recieve items or gold. You need it to send items or gold.

Q. How can you tell if you have a trade pass?

A. Go to the bank. On the picture of the desk if it says "Buy Pass" then you will need to buy the pass before you can send anything out. The "trade pass" costs only 500gold and you only need to buy it once.

Q. I can't find a certain item in the stores. Where can I find it?

A. Chances are the item you are looking for is a rare or uncommon. If this is the case you will have to buy it from another user. A list of all available rare items and uncommon items is located in Gaian Exchange Network.

Q. Whats the difference between a "Rare" and an "Uncommon"?

A. A "Rare" item is found in Pink Boxes. "Uncommon" items are found in Enchanted Trunks. Both Pink Boxes and Enchanted Trunks are found around the site in what is called an event. Events are random and don't always come. It may be afew months before you see one.

Q. How long does this auction last?

A. Certain auctions have time limits and others don't. Sometimes it is wise to ask before you place a bid IF they don't have something posted in the first post about the end time. If there is something talking about "no end time" then don't ask them for it may get them mad.

Q. How did those threads get "sticky"?

A. The creator of the thread PMed one of the mods incharge of the forum they are posting in. If the mod believes that thread will be helpful to be "sticky" then they will "sticky" it. A "sticky" thread does not have to be bumped for it will always stay at the top of the first page.

Have some questions about the Exchange that are not up here? Feel free to post your question. I will get it answered one way or the other and put it up here. If you have something to add to one of my answers post here and if it seems helpful I will add it.

Buying and selling Gaian items with real money is not allowed and is a bannable offense for all parties involved.
Basically, Gaian gold & donations to Gaia are the only ways to get Gaian items. All Gaian items are copyrighted to AniHQ, thus you are not allowed to make profit out of them, simply they don't actually belong to you.

FAQ:

Q. I don't see why you can't trade $200 for a halo though, if u look on Ebay, you see digital magic cards, and warcraft 3 items for sale, you pay the people on paypal, then you go into the game and they trade it to you.
A. You are not allowed trade $200 for a Halo for the same reason you not allowed to trade digital magic cards and warcraft 3 items, they are copyrighted and they have a ToS that specifies users cannot sell their items.

Q. So you mean even though I payed gold for my items, they are not really mine?
A. They are yours to play with on Gaia, but not to sell them for money and make a profit. The items and everything else on gaia is copyrighted AniHQ.

Q. If someone in the MiniShops wanted to sell, for instance, a framed print of a PuriPet on eBay (assuming that it was the creator of puripets who wanted to sell them, that is) would there be any problem with that?
A. If he's the creator, he can sell them anywhere for anything he wanted. But he cannot sell them on Gaia for real money because he would be profiting and using space and bandwith here.

On the same note, buying and selling Neopet & other games items in Gaia is not allowed as well, it is illegal. Please read the second post which contains their ToS paragraph about selling items.

I leave you with my favorite quote on the matter:
koutoni
Why on earth would someone offer $200 for something that's not even real?

Got a question about donation letters?
This should answer it!

Quote:
Orrigional post by Aerion on Dec 01, 2003

Donation Letters - What the heck? O.o

Q: What exactly IS a donation letter?

A: Donation letters are as the name states, a 'letter'(item) that you recieve for donating money to Gaia Online.
Each $2.50 donation gets you one donation letter for that month. A new letter is released at the beginning of each month, while the previous months letters are discontinued.

Q: That sounds cool. So how do I get one?

A: You can get them from either donating $2.50 through PayPal to Gaia (this will give you the letter in your inventory instantly) with a credit card, sending a checkmoney order through snail mail to Gaia (it will appear in your inventory as soon as they get it and the check clears), or you could purchase one from a user who has donated themself, and is selling one in the Exchange.

If your sending a checkmoney order in to Gaia, here is the address (Please make any checks or money order payable to "AniHQ" wink :

Q: Okay, so thats all nice... But why would I want one?

A: You would want to buy a letter, for many reasons~
One of them being the items you get when you open them. Donation letter contain 2 items each. When you open a letter, you are asked to select one of the 2 items, which will then appear in your inventory, in place of the letter. Each month, a new letter is released, meaning that each month, there are 2 new donation items.
The other being, because donation letters are only distributed durring their respective month, meaning that once say, December is over, if 1000 letters were purchased, there will only be 1000 letters in existance on Gaia, meaning that everyone that wants one cant get it, making donation letters a great investment for future gold making purposes! Its all about supply and demand~

Q: WTH?? My letter wont open!

A: Its not supposed to! Donation letters are sealed untill the end of the 25th of every month!

Q: Soooo..... Whats in this months letter?

A: Its a secret~ No one except the Admins know whats in the letters untill they are released 3nodding

Trading with users for your letter

As some of you have seen, the procedure for distributing donation letters has changed! Letters can now be sold all throughout the month, but can only be opened on the 25th or later~
To find out more, read VO's post in the announcements!

In light of this, I've decided to post my 'Scam Proof Trade Method'!
Dun dun dun.... domokun
I go around the Exchange on a daily basis and read over threads from people selling donations or buying donations, and it surprises me that this method hasnt become common place yet~ surprised

Trade 1
First, you start the trade with the person donating for you, like so:

Trade 2
The donor will recieve the trade, add the letter and confirm the trade:

Trade 3
Once you recieve the final trade, check to make sure the letter is there, and confirm for the final time:

When purchasing letters, it also helps to look at the donors join date in their profile, and some of their past posts. A naked donor who joined a week ago, more than likely isnt going to be sending you a letter if you send them your gold.
Also, if the donor refuses to donate for themselfs first, its probably a scam.
Always keep an eye out for the warning signs, and be a smart buyer, and you wont get scammed! 3nodding confused

Good luck, and happy trading!~

*Donation letter price based on whatever I felt like adding when taking the screen shot, please do not assume it as a standard cost.
