The Chrono Series

Here is my first attempt to make a thread on two games that I love so very much, Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross. Added in as a bonus is Radical Dreamers, the True sequel to Chrono Trigger that was never released to the US for many reasons, that will be covered in later posts.

The Chrono series is a story about Time itself, and the unraveling of it.
In Chrono Trigger, you must save the world from the planet devouring entity known as Lavos. You must Travel back and forth between Hundreds, to thousands to even millions of years, to figure out how to Stop Lavos, the time Devourer..
Chrono Cross however, is set twenty years into the Future of the Chrono Trigger timeline. You are a young boy who finds out that he is the assassian of time, the True Chrono Trigger, and you must stop from destroying time itself.

The Chrono games are your Traditional RPG's in a sense, except in Chrono Cross, your battle system revolves around a Stamina bar that you are given, making it more intuitive and more thought provocative to play, and in Chrono Trigger, it is your basic Turn based RPG, but you can mix up moves with other characters and create even more powerful Combos.

The story of a young man who never expected to become a Hero, he woke up one day to attend a fair and see his best friend Luca's latest invention. On the way there he met a young woman named Marle and took her to see Luca's teleporter. Hurled into the past they soon realize that their actions can change and shape the present. So upon discovering the threat of a sleeping creature destined to destroy the world as they know it, they decide to try and prevent the future they have discovered from ever coming to pass. Believe it or not, there was a Chrono Trigger sequel long before Chrono Cross came out. It was called Radical Dreamers and it completed some of the story lines that weren't completed in Chrono Trigger itself. It was released in 1996 on the Satellaview Super Famicom add-on in Japan.

Radical Dreamers is a game considered to be the events between the Square games Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross. In reality, that is not true. This game was the basis for Chrono Cross, which is made obvious by the characters and music.

To set the mood, in the beginning you play as Serge, Kid and Guile as you make your way into and throughout the Viper Mansion in your attempt to steal the legendary item, the Frozen Flame. Those of you familiar with CC should know this item.
The game play is very simple to understand. If you can find a ROM and understand Japanese, or even find one that has been translated, the whole thing is just a bunch of text. If you are not a real fan of literature, this game is not for you. Even the battles are all about reading. As you make your way throughout the game you will make selections about where to go and what to do. Such as, if you want to open a door, go down the stairs, knock on a door, etc. You will also encounter enemies throughout.
The graphics are very limited and the game is very dark. While some of the images may be nice to look at, they are just that. They don't move, nor do they change in any way. They are just rendered images behind text. They are nice graphics however; a lot better then many others for the Super Famicom.
Most of the tunes are either the exact same as those in Chrono Cross, some even from Chrono Trigger, there were a few nice melodies that I do not recall from either game.

Chrono Cross isn't your traditional RPG, not only is it Turn based, but you are given a stamina bar in which you get to choose the power of your attacks, compared to just attacking in a normal turn based RPG, but you can also switch between any character you currently have to attack, as long as their Stamina bar isn't exhausted.

Chrono Cross is one of the few games to use the Playstations capabilities to Maximun output, this game is sheer beauty to watch and play, as you are never dissappointed graphically or storywise. It is also one of the few games where you have the ability to gather around 40 characters to help you throughout the game. You cannot get all of them through one playthrough, so it takes numerous playthroughs to truly aquire all the characters.

Main Characters::

Serge-

Serge is the silent protagonist of Chrono Cross. He is an uncomplicated youth from Arni Village, a small fishing town on the south part of the El Nido Archipelago's central continent, Zenan. Ten years ago, Serge's father disappeared under mysterious circumstances, and Serge nearly drowned. One day, Serge is drawn into Another World. This world is exactly like Serge's Home World in many ways... except some things have changed. Why has Serge been drawn into Another World? Is he trapped?

Kid-

A "cute and helpless young girl" (her words, not ours) who is always ready to kick her opponents' arses so hard they'll kiss the moons. Her accent is modeled on an Australian accent. Kid leaps to Serge's aid when he is surrounded by Dragoon thugs, and pesters him repeatedly to join forces. The first Tech Skill she learns allows the player to steal items from enemies. She is one of only two characters who can steal for the first half of the game, making her a very handy party member. But what does Kid really want from Serge? Why is she so desperate to accompany him to Viper Manor? Who is this Lynx character, and why does she hate him so terribly?

Lynx-

A feline demi-human who is Kid's archenemy. An enigmatic and cunning character, Lynx displays frightening insight into Serge's past and his current situation. Rumored to be seeking the legendary Frozen Flame, Lynx has recently been seen amongst the Dragoons at Viper Manor. Has Lynx allied himself with General Viper? Is he attempting to manipulate the current path of history? And why does he seek out Serge?

Harle-

References

It is mentioned in Cross that the Kingdom of Gaurdia fell to Porre a Militiristic nation to the north of the Archipeligo

Porre, the militiristic nation mentioned in Cross, is also the name of a large village on the southern continent in Trigger

A few connections can be drawn to Luca from the first game. Her home which you visit so often in Trigger is in fact the veyr Orphenage you enter via the power of the Mastermune or Chrono Cross in order to save Kid. Luca is in fact the one who raised Kid seeign as Kid is in fact the baby Luca finds in the PSX Ending for Trigger. Lucia was also a correspondent of Luca's and even held a letter for Kid from Luca that you can aquire late in the game, a letter which oddly enough mentions the enigmatic mage Janus/Magus.

The Orphanage itself priovides many connections between Trigger and Cross. The Robot seen in the burning orphanage is in fact Gato, the dancing robot you sparred with as Chrono and friends while visitign the Mellenial Fair. The code to unlcok Kid's 7th level tech at the orphanage is the same code needed to save Luca's mother when you have the chance to return to that time in Trigger, that code in both cases being "LARA" which is the name of Luca's mother. There is even a reference to the previous code itself in that Luca says she improved upon her fathers code. Also while you are in the Orphanage you can seen pictures drawn by the children portraying characters from Trigger.

Alternate futures

There are many portrayed links using the Alternate futures for each Huamn's and Reptites

In one such future the Humans progress over time, they create FATE which is oddly enough the version of the very computer you had to defeat in Trigger (Mother Brain) only in the production of FATE they included Promethius (Robo) as a safegaurd. Upon its destruction in 1999 LAvos pulled back the city of Chronopolis where FATE rested to try and use FATE to ensure its continues existence, however the Promethius safegaurd prevented this. But it seems history was doomed to repeat itself as FATE wished to become a new life form and so sought to merge itself with the Arbiter of time. Even managing to destroy the safegaurd Promethius which had been installed to prevent this. Also the Masamune was the sword forged by man in the kindgom of Zeal, later it is shown in the PSX ending for trigger that the sword which was said to "Embody the dreams of Melchoir" became tainted in the great slaughter of the war with Porre, as Melchoir saught to protect life the sword being used in such a way seems to have tainted it, Its spirits slimberign as the sword itself draws out the Enmity in the hearts of its weilder at least until the spirits reawaken after the defeat of Dario.

In the other possable future stemming all the way from 65,000,000 BC the Reptites evolve into the ravce known as the Dragonites. They craft the great fortress Terra Tower and a powerful Biomachine that actd in accordence with the will of the planet. The Dragonites also forge their own great sword called "The Einlanzer" which I suppose you could say is their version of the Masamune. When Lavos drags Chronopolis from the future to the past, the planet reacts by dragging Tera Tower and the "Dragon Gods" (the biomachine constructed by the Dragonites) back as well to oppose Chronopolis and FATE. In this act the sword Einlanzer and Fort Dragonia come to exist in the past as well as Tera Tower and the Dragon Gods.

Upon being drawn back these two forces collided, FATE dedicated a portion fo its power to keeping the Dreagon Gods Sealed while they in turn used their power to seal Away Chronopolis in essence creatign a stalemate.

In the PSX ending for Trigger we are shown a scene in which Luca finds a young baby in possession of a pendant that looks strangley like that of the royal familes of Gaurdia and Zeal. You find out throughout events in Cross that this child is in fact a clone of Princess Schala fo Zeal. Masa and Mune recognize Kid as Schala when awakened and even refer to here as "The Princess" when they notice her.

Time Paradox

The Destruction of Lavos created a Paradox that combined with the time crash serves to explain many things and form further links between the two games.

With the Destruction of Lavos in 1999 the future created by his arrival was cast into a temporal void or "Tesseract" where the remaisn of its awakening were sealed away beyond time itself.

When Lavos awakened in the Kingdom of Zeal in 12,000 BC Shcala was accidently hurled into this very same Teseract where she in turn fused with one of the Lavos spawn residing there

When the Time Crash occured the "Dragon God" and the Dreagonite society where likewise hurled into the Tesseract.

So between the destruction of Lavos in 1999 and the Time Crash that resulted due to those events and others.... Lavos Spawn, Schala, and the Dragon God somehow were merged to form the "Time Devourer" whom had no place within time and so sought to destroy all of time.

bump What would have kicked a** would have been Chrono Resurrection... I believe it would have been like chrono trigger(original) but I don't remember it... But last year they were given a deceased notice to stop the developement because they were using a lot of the company's money. It would have been for PC Gamecube and Xbox... but it sucks that they were forced to stop...Here is the link for a footage when the work was in progress. If the sound and video do not deem right, then wait for them BOTH to finish and click refresh. Then they will go together near perfectly. It also depends on you're using. If you using Cable/DSL/T1 or higher, then it will load pretty quickly. If you using any modem, then please have patience with your page when It is loading. If the link does not work when you click it, simply highlight the link, copy, and paste it into the place where you type in words to go into a website.

there si a good reason they were told to stop

they were illegally usign the license, characters, and artowork from the game..... I beleive they had made about 3 seperate violations of international copyright

Story and Characters - Square Enix

Design and Artwork by the original artist who is actually a Manga Ka working in the Anime industry

and they were remixing the music and using it without permission from the composer or Square-Enix

I personally would never support a project that so blatantly screwed over the peopel who actually put th work and effort into designign characters and story for the original game.
Is it just my Cartridge that hs this problem? When I kill Magus, Glenn doesn't turn back in the ending, he's still a f'ing Frog!
I might get flamed for this, but I must express my true feelings. I really loved Chrono Trigger, but I absolutely hated Chrono Cross. It wasn't the characters, story, music, or graphics at all, those I loved. It was the gameplay/battle system. I think it was at least as bad as Final Fantasy VIII's system. And yes, I'll probably get slammed on for that too. I just couldn't stand the Drawing system for 8 and I hated the color sphere for CC. Sorry, but that's the way I feel.

coudl be a glitch with your cartridge then, it is not unknown for older cartridge games to suffer such glitches.

I would suggest pickign up the PSX copy if you can find it, aside from soem irritatign load times it plays exactly the same..... with the addition of actual animated cutscenes and cinematics

Sometimes, those load times got on my nerves, especially when it takes 2-3 minutes to load a boss fight.

And the Ending is somewhat slowed down when the Backgrounds of different times starts flashing really fast after you defeat Lavos.
