Welcome to the Knights of the Old Republic thread, this thread is dedicated to the intelligent discussion of a wonderful series set in the Star Wars universe. The Series itself takes place roughly four thousand years before the films and so presents gamers with a wold that shows the galactic republic at its height and in its prime. Into this world you enter in one way or another and are thrust into events that will either shape the galaxy into a place of peace and prosperity, or into a galaxy ruled by those with power. It is up to you as the player to either choose the side of good and take on the role of a Jedi Knight, or to seek personal power and gain by taking on the mantle of a Sith.
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic

The first game is set shortly after the end of the Mandalorian war, during the second Sith war. It is a time when many live in fear of the possable attack by sith forces and both the republic and the Jedi seek to find out how the sith are ammasing such a massive fleet. As the game begins you are aboard a republic ship that comes under attack by the Sith, shortly after you find yourself stranded on the planet below with nothing more than the clothes on yoru back and a few basic weapons. You must not only rescue a survivor from the ship, but find a way to escape the planet before the Sith can find you. So begins a journey that will lead you across many planets, and will reveal much about your character as well as his/her past as you seek to unravel the mystery of the Sith Fleet and how it was amassed so quickly by tracking the path of those who command the fleet itself.
Knights of the Old Republic II: Sith Lords

After the apparent fall of the sith fleet not all is well in a Galaxy far far away. For it seems that numerous Sith Lords remain and seek to destroy the republic despite the fall of the Sith Fleet. You take on the role of "The Exile" a fallen jedi cast out of the order after the Mandalorian war, now returnign from the outer rim to find that things are not as they should be. As "The Exile" you are thrust into the events surroundign this new Sith thread and seek to unravel the mystery about these new Sith as well as the mystery as to what happened when you were exiled... as well as why you were truly exiled in the first place. Will you seek to restore balence and defeat the Sith, or will you seek revenge on the Jedi who exiled you.... the choice is yours, and with it rests the fate of the Galaxy.
Knights of the Old Republic NPCs

User Image Carth Onasi: A career soldier at 38, Carth has seen more than his fair share of war. A skilled pilot and superior tactician, he has always faced his duty with grim determination, believing that loyalty and dedication to the Republic would see him through. He has come to discover, however, that not everyone holds this opinion.

User Image Mission Vao: Surviving in the Lower City of Taris is no easy task, particularly for a young Twi'lek girl on her own. But Mission has not only survived in the hard world of the swoop gangs, she's thrived. Nobody knows the hidden alleys, backstreets and secret entrances in the Lower City like this former street urchin, and she's even been known to explore the creature-infested sewers of the Undercity itself.

User Image Zaalbar the Wookiee: The city world of Taris is a strange place to find a Wookiee, but Zaalbar has managed to create a life for himself there, far from the kilometer high wroshyr trees of his homeworld. Zaalbar will say little about why he left Kashyyyk, but it is obvious that the memories of his old life are painful.

User Image T3-M4: Utility droids of all makes and models are a common sight on every planet throughout the galaxy. The versatility of these handy little droids, combined with their reliable programming and affordability, has made them popular for everything from light janitorial duties to complex mechanical repairs and maintenance. Among the premier utility droids currently available are those in the T3 series. Though more expensive than most standard models, T3 droids contain the latest in advanced circuitry and programming, and are easily fitted with a variety of customized upgrades.

User Image Bastila Shan: To most, the Jedi order is more than a vocation; it is a calling. To a select few it is much more. Bastila Shan is the quintessential Jedi: trained from a very young age and gifted with a natural ability with the Force that has given her both renown and considerable pride. Despite her youth, Bastila is skilled in the rare art of Battle Meditation... through sheer force of will she can influence the course of a battle. One side is given courage and strength while the other is sapped of their will. This ability alone has put Bastila into the forefront of the Republic's plan to defeat the Sith.

User Image Canderous Ordo: Canderous Ordo makes his living as a mercenary, selling his services to the highest bidder. Most often this turns out to be an underworld figure wanting to capitalize on his considerable skills as a combatant, tactician, and outright thug. If his criminal clients knew where he learned his trade, however, even they might have second thoughts about hiring him.

User Image Juhani: Juhani, like most Cathar who choose to join the Jedi Order, is locked in a never ending struggle to find a balance between her instincts and her training. The feline Cathar are known throughout the galaxy for their courage in battle, their fierce loyalty and their quick tempers; such intense passions can make it difficult for one of this proud species to follow the way of the light

User Image HK-47: A self-sentient killing machine, it is obvious merely from its menacing appearance that HK-47 is far more than an ordinary combat droid. With a devastating arsenal of high-powered weaponry, a ruthless and single-minded pursuit of its termination targets, and a pre-programmed disregard for all organic life, this Hunter-Killer model is one of the most dangerous assassins in the galaxy.

User Image Jolee Bindo: A former smuggler, and skilled Jedi, who has chosen to retreat from society and live out his days in seclusion and obscurity, Jolee Bindo cloaks himself in indifference to hide his sorrow. He appears as a cantankerous old man who readily dismisses the wide world and its troubles with an impatient wave of his hand, but his care and wisdom still shine through the many layers he has draped around his heart.
Knights of the Old Republic II: Sith Lords NPCs

User Image Atton Rand: Disaster follows Atton Rand wherever he goes. While his primary talent is cheating death just long enough to stumble into the next crisis, Rand is also a skilled pilot, mechanic, gambler and liar. He thinks of self-preservation before all else; barring that, his most pressing concern is finding the next cantina with a Pazaak game. Initially imprisoned on Peragus, he is one of the first companions the player encounters. Rand is a solid fighter. He possesses a wide range of armor and weapon proficiencies and non-combat skills, while his preservation instinct actually makes him stronger the more dire the situation becomes. So long as another party member is standing, Rand cannot be knocked down, and he will stave off unconsciousness and keep fighting if he has party support. This survival instinct also makes Rand very difficult to stun, paralyze or poison.

User Image Kreia: The elderly mentor Kreia forms a powerful telepathic bond with the player, determined to help him rediscover the ways of the Force. She is, in fact, quite willing to sacrifice herself if it means the player will survive and reconnect with his teachings. Throughout the game, Kreia will teach the player new ways to listen to the Force, permitting him to gain new powers and abilities. When she is an active party member, Kreia gives everyone an earned experience bonus. Even better, the unique bond she shares with the player allows him to Force Chain attacks and defense. Any Force Power cast on Kreia or the player will be automatically applied to the other party members as well.

User Image T3-M4: His chassis dented and scored by blaster fire, T3 looks as if he's narrowly missed a proton core explosion or two. This battered astromech droid is the first character to appear in The Sith Lords. His opening mission is to repair the Ebon Hawk and pilot it to safety before it's crushed into space dust in the wilds of the Peragus asteroid field. Once docked at the Peragus mining facility, however, a much greater threat confronts the crew. The talkative T3 communicates only with clicks and beeps, but he's got a grand story to tell and plays a pivotal role in the conflicts to come. He is an expert in security, demolitions, computers and mechanical repair, acting as a portable workbench for the player. The player uses him to break down equipment into its component parts, clearing inventory and assembling more powerful weapons and items.

User Image Bao-Dur: When the Mandalorian Wars began, the Sith forces struck the Outer Rim Iridonian colonies with a vengeance. As a result, many Iridonians were the first to join the Republic's war effort. One of them was a gifted young mechanic named Bao Dur, eager to lend his technical expertise to the cause. During his years of wartime service, he was instrumental in producing new weapons, shields and other technology for use in battle against the Mandalorians. When the wars ended, Bao Dur drifted, scarred by the countless atrocities he had witnessed. He found purpose again assisting the Outer Rim rebuilding effort. A skilled mechanic and architect, Bao Dur is able to build or repair almost anything, even a mechanical replacement for his own arm, lost near the end of the Wars. This mechanized appendage is incredibly strong, making him a formidable opponent in a fight. It also has the power to destroy force fields and shields, rendering enemies vulnerable to conventional attacks.

User Image Echani Handmaiden: The mysterious Echani Handmaidens, 5 sisters, have faithfully served the Jedi Order for years, acting as scouts, soldiers and missionaries. Vowing not to learn the Jedi way after the destruction wrought by the Jedi Civil War, they have maintained a galaxy-wide vigil, watching for re-emergent Sith or fallen Jedi. However, they too have vanished, their fate unknown. The Echani pride themselves on physical combat. Well-versed in hand-to-hand and melee weapon techniques, they are lethal fighters, able to shrug off damage with deft blocks or by anticipating and evading their opponents' strikes. The Echani believe that a person's true nature is only revealed through combat; thus, their highly stylized, ritualistic fighting is a kind of dialogue between adversaries, testing their enemies' spirit and resolve. It is said that the greatest Echani warriors can predict the outcome of a conflict several hours, weeks and in rare cases, even years in advance simply by knowing the nature and numbers of the enemies they face.

User Image Visas Marr: A Dark Jedi Miraluka from the Mid-Rim world of Katarr, Visas Marr is the lone surviving member of her species. Gifted with the ability to see only through the Force, she perceives the world through Force patterns and flux, allowing her to see the true nature of her enemies, and her own true nature as well. This power is called Force Sight. When looking across The Sith Lords landscape, Marr can see through obstacles to the sentients waiting in mbush beyond. When her homeworld was obliterated by the Sith, Marr was claimed by one of the greatest Sith Lords as his apprentice and slave. Why she was spared when her people were slain is unknown. Her enslavement has broken her will and corroded her spirit; she is deep in the thrall of the dark side.

User Image Mira: A bounty hunter scout who combs the Republic and the Outer Rim for anyone and anything with a price on its head, Mira reels them in and cashes them out. While driven by a mercenary need for cash, she avoids contract killing. In the past, she has killed only in self-defense, and even then reluctantly. Mira comes equipped with bounty hunter-specific weaponry, including a versatile wrist-mounted rocket launcher that allows her to target a single opponent with concussion or tranquilizer darts, or decimate hordes of enemies with buster or ion rockets-the ideal way to level the playing field when you're outnumbered.

User Image Hanharr: Brutish, filled with rage and borderline psychotic, Hanharr is often considered a bounty hunter in name only. Originally from the Wookiee homeworld of Kashyyyk, Hanharr became enraged when the Czerka Corporation arrived and began taking slaves. Hanharr slaughtered his entire village, in his own words, to 'save' them. Hanharr was eventually taken into slavery, but later managed to escape and go to other human-inhabited worlds to enslave them as revenge. It is said his latest travels have landed him on the planet Nar Shaddaa. Rumor has it that a bitter 'relationship' lies between Hanharr and Mira. Scarcely known, and revealed only in bits and pieces, a common term always seems to stem up... "lifedebt". Mystery in it's origin, or perhaps unwillingless to discuss the topic, Hanharr often seems torn between the desire to kill Mira, or stalk her from the shadows. Hanharr has the unique, and often deadly, ability to invoke a "Wookie Battle Rage", making him virtually invulnerable and a force to be reckoned with. Those who have 'survived' such an attack often only live long enough to tell of it's horrendous effects.

User Image G0-T0: Little is known about G0-T0, as 'his' origin seems to be as mysterious as his whereabouts. This sentry model droid is known to be the liason between Goto and his dealings with, oftentimes, questionably legal matters (or persons). Said to have a deep interest in the Republic and it's condition, it would come to no surprise that Goto's and the Exile's path will cross. How G0-T0's role falls into that perspective is yet to be determined. G0-T0 is a floating stealth-oriented expert droid whose primary function is to infiltrate, search, and destroy. G0-T0's personal cloaking shield allows him to easily enter into stealth mode without a stealth field generator, and his built-in targeting module allows for immediate access to Improved Power Blast and Improved Rapid Shot capabilities.

User Image The Disciple: The disappearance of the Jedi drove many explorers to search for them and attempt to discover their fate. One such seeker is a lone Disciple working for the Republic. He has traversed the galaxy in search of Jedi and any trace of their teachings, much of which were lost when Saul Karath bombed Dantooine and turned the planet's skies to ash. Why the Disciple seeks the Jedi so fervently, or what he hopes to learn from their ancient teachings is not known. While he shares the distrust much of the galaxy feels for the Order in the wake of the Jedi Civil War, he is nevertheless drawn to them, and is acutely aware that their skill is needed if the Republic is to be salvaged from destruction. The Disciple is a skilled healer. In addition to making medpacs and other healing items, he functions as a portable medical workbench, capable of breaking down items into their chemical components so that more valuable items may be made.

User Image Mandalore: Since time immemorial, the Mandalorian clans were built on strict codes of honor and tradition. The leader of all clans was known as Mandalore. When a Mandalore fell, another would be chosen to succeed him. Many years have passed since Darth Revan defeated the last Mandalore; none was chosen to take his place. Without a leader, the clans scattered to the far corners of the galaxy, finding work as mercenaries, raiders or worse. Now a new Mandalore has assumed rule, and rumor tells of a battle-hardened warrior who is reuniting the clans. A seasoned war veteran, Mandalore has the ability to make stims upon request.

Rumored to have been created by Czerka Corp to eliminate the heads of rival corporations, HK-47 is quite capable of laying waste to an entire building in an effort to dispose of a single target, as it has demonstrated on more than one occasion in the past. This wanton carnage, combined with the tendency of the droid's previous owners to come to rather gruesome ends, has led most civilized planets to issue explicit bans on all HK-model assassin droids. But on the dangerous worlds of the Outer Rim, having a merciless, flame-throwing engine of destruction at your side can be quite useful... until it decides you're the next target.
Knights of the Old Republic Impressions
The game is quite well done overall, you definatley get the feel that you are free to do as you choose in terms of how you react to people. There is also a feelign of completeness to the worlds as you can see events occurign outside of the main story and can even take part in those events if you so choose, but these events never feel like convoluted sidequests that detract from the story. The story itself is well done as well, you feel drawn in early on by the events and mysteries surroundign some things and later on even more so as the plot unfolds and you are given a few plot twists and revelations. The Combat system is amazingly well done allowing for either real time or turn based combat with the simple act of enabling or disabling an autopause feature. Leveling is both simple and flexible, borrowing pretyt much directly from the D20 system used for the Star Wars Table Top game as well as similar games such as D&D and Ravenloft. My only complaint is that the custimization system seems rather limited and rigid as there is not really any variety in what you can do, each weapon only has slots for the same static upgrades assuming it is even upgradable. But that is a fairly minor complaint and it is vastly overshadowed by all the great things in this game. Overall I would have to say this game is a must have for any RPG fan.
Knights of the Old Republic II: Sith Lords Impressions
This game starts off well by drawign you into things right away with the mystery surrounding the Exile. As with its predessecor you very much have the feel that you are free to do things as you please in terms of how you react and interact with NPCs as well as with how you handle story related situations. This perticular aspect actually feels expanded and improved in the sequel as you also see the influence you are having on your party members as they change and shift in response to your choices and actions. As in the first game side events are woven into the story and surroundings in such a way that they add to the gameplay without detracting from the main story, giving that same sense of depth and completeness that was apparent in the first game. Customization both of weapons and characters haev improved this time around. In terms fo characters you will see more feats available in terms of basic abilites, and even more so as you reach the point where you can take on "Jedi Presteige Classes" which unlock additional feats and abilities. Weaposn customization leapt forward with each type of upgrade having several varieties and degrees of quality available, Lightsabers especially show this as they still sport the 3 crystal slots but now also have 3 hardware slots that can be customized as well. The replay factor has also been stepped up a bit, as this tiem aroudn there are characters that only join you if you are a given gender or alignement so you are very much rewarded for multiple playthroughs and to keep this from seeming overly repetitive all item drops and containers are randomly generated. My only complaint is that the story is not quite as immersive as that of the first game, and the ending is no where near as satisfying as that of the original. But the story is still quite good, and this minor complaint is again vastly overshadowed by the great gameplay aspects as well as the story that continues from the first game to some degree. I would highly recomend this game to anyone who enjoyed the original KotOR.
News:

Though there is no official news there are two rather interesting KotOR related tiidbits

the first is that durign an interveiw Peter Hirschman, vice-president of product development at LucasArts, answered a question about KotOR 3 in the following maner

Quote:
Q: Ok, I'm going to throw out some more titles, and you can comment, or react to them however you like. Knights of the Old Republic III?

A: That's a great idea. [Poker face]

Source: Globe and Mail

The Second is that after layign off 31 employees including soem rumored to be working on a new KotOR game, Lucasarts has not only moved into a new beuilding but hired 200 persons in different areas siting

Quote:
the bulk of the hiring will be "code warriors, designers" -- development jobs, but will also include marketing professionals.

Now while this is nothing definite it does show an expansion of staff and gives hope that just maybe KotOR 3 could be on the slate of new projects
