River of Discovery

In the near future, the world has changed little. People continue on their merry ways oblivious to another world beneath the waters. Mermaids and mermen exist, and they have been doing quite well for themselves. Though like the humans, most are oblivious to the existence of the other. Elder merpeople know of the humans, and have always known. The eldest make up a parliament who govern the seas and tell their people not to stray too far from the lines they have drawn to keep the merfolk from the ever inquisitive eyes of the humans. Of course, the elders expect to be obeyed without question, and as everyone knows, when one is not given a reason, one rarely follows the rules.

Genderfemale
Appearance Rayne, with bright blue green eyes.
Race mermaid
Bio Rayne's mother is on the council, and Rayne is supposed to take over for her in the coming years... but she has no interest in politics, or the rules of the colony. She constantly disregards them, her excuse being her job as antiques dealer. She runs a shop that sells all the items she finds in ships. She is always ignoring her parents' attempts to make her act like a proper mermaid and always off on her own.
Because of her job, she has sometimes seen humans and of course fully believes in them. She loves watching them and is greatly interested in the human world. She loves the items she finds on the ships and is far too curious about the few humans she has seen in her life for her own good.

Nathan swam through the corridors of the latest wreck he was exploring, glancing around, hoping to see Rayne again "I don't know why, but I feel so comfortable with her around" Nathan thought to himself "Maybe... No. We are two different species"
PostPosted: Tue Dec 25, 2007 8:08 pm

Rayne flips the sign over from open to closed and smiling grabs her seaweed satchel from the shelf, setting it on over her shoulder before she leaves her shop. She always headed out around this time every few days to hunt for new merchandise outside the city limits. It used to be because these days were the slowest.... but now it was because of who she knew she might get to see at the wreaks she visited.
She told herself it was just curiosity that drew her to follow him through the ships over and over again, always watching from a distance... it had to be. After all, he was a human. Of course she was curious about his species.
At least, that was what she told herself for the thousandth time as she locked up shop, then swam away from the city, towards the less inhabited kelp fields, then later the trenches where the wreaks always were gathered, like a graveyard or trove of human relics.
A while later, Rayne saw a new wreak appear out of the haze. Rayne glances around, then up, noticing the ship he traveled in floating on the waves overhead. Rayne grins, then turns her gaze back to this new ship as she kicks her tail, swimming towards it.

Nathan aimed his spotlight through a door-way, glancing into the room "Wonder what's in here" he thought to himself, swimming into it slowly "Hm... looks like the galley"
PostPosted: Tue Dec 25, 2007 8:21 pm

Rayne swims up over the side of the ship and skims across the deck, smiling as she sees the open hatch. The human had most definitely been here, if he wasn't still down below. Reaching the hatch, Rayne grabs the edges and pulls herself down into the hull, looking around curiously, noticing the tell tale signs that somebody had been through here recently.
Rayne glances around a bit, then swims into the next room, pausing as she sees him through an open doorway, about to enter another room. Rayne smiles, quickly swimming over to some decaying ropes and barrels and pulls herself down behind them. He always caught on eventually, but she liked to see how long she could shadow him without being noticed. Settling down, Rayne watches through the doorway to see what the human was up to today

Nathan had been keeping an eye on his peripheral vision while exploring the wreck, & spotted Rayne when she slipped into her hiding space. Nathan decided to pretend he hadn't seen her, however.
PostPosted: Tue Dec 25, 2007 8:32 pm

Rayne grins, trying to resist from laughing as she goes undetected. Once she felt he was paying enough attention to the wreckage and not what was behind him, she slips from her hiding place and drifts over to the door, grabbing onto the old and aging wood, pulling herself close to the wall as she peeks around the corner to watch him silently. She never went within the same room usually, not on purpose, unless it was a big room, like the crew sleeping quarters, where she had plenty of places to hide, and he wasn't paying much attention to her. While she was more curious than most, and knew he had seen her each time, she was still wary... or maybe just shy.

Nathan suddenly turned around & waved at Rayne, his eyes sparkling with unheard laughter. Chuckling mentally, Nathan went back to exploring the room
PostPosted: Tue Dec 25, 2007 8:43 pm

Rayne's eyes widen as she makes a small, shrill noise of surprise, then pulls herself quickly out of sight, hiding within the room she was in, back behind the ropes and barrels. No matter how often he suddenly turned his full attention to her, she couldn't help reacting as she did. Mermaids were like fish in that sense. Their fight or flight response always leaned towards the latter, and always went off easily. Taking in a few gulps of water, Rayne peaks out once more from the barrels, glancing back at the doorway cautiously to see what the human was up to now.

Nathan shook his head, chuckling to himself "Never gets old" he thought to himself, swimming on to the next room "Should head to a room close to the top decks of the wreck"
PostPosted: Tue Dec 25, 2007 9:05 pm

Rayne leans over further, peaking into the next room, then blinks, seeing that he had left that room. Rayne hesitates, then pulls herself out from her hiding spot again and drifts into the room he had just left. She didn't know why she found him so interesting still. He never did anything all that different... and yet she was always here, day after day, drifting after him through the ship like his own personal ghost.
Half way through the room, Rayne slows, then stops behind a large beam set against the wall once she was in sight of the next room. Cautiously, Rayne then peaks around the pillar and through the doorway, into the next room where Nathan was now.

"Wonder if the armory is intact on this thing" Nathan thought to himself, pulling himself along the hallway, keeping an eye out for hanging debris.
