"The Brothers Soot"
Once upon a long time ago, there were six soot ball brothers, the Brothers Soot. The oldest soot ball was named Wigglesnook, then came Frigglepuffen the shy, Gurrglehick the handsome of face, Eckinmoot the strong and brave, Quirrleyvitt the fashionable, and Poogey, the youngest. All of the brothers worked at the local coal kiln factory carrying coal from the basement chimney to the kiln under the herb shelves. Every day the six soot balls walked to the factory in their favorite red and white, or green and white, striped boots. The older brothers, Wigglesnook, Frigglepuffen, and Gurrglehick, all wore red and white striped boots. The younger brother's shoes were green and white striped. There was no reason for the difference of color or why the elder soot balls got red and the younger green, this was how it had always been. Then one day Gurrglehick, who had always been a favorite of the ladies and was always trying to impress them, bought a brand new, shiny yellow sneaker-skate. Before the sneaker-skate had even been driven Quirrleyvitt was quick to say,"Now, my Brothers Soot, we will no longer have to walk to the coal kiln. We can drive and arrive in style and fashion!" So when they had a day off from work, Gurrglehick and his soot ball brothers went driving through the Dust Bunny Hills which were just a sweep away from Chimney where they lived. Suddenly, right at the peak of Lost Sock Mountain, the brand new, shiny yellow sneaker-skate broke! The Brothers Soot sat in amazement and dismay as they watched the spaghetti-o noodle wheels fly right off the sides of the sneaker-skate and down the side of the mountain onto the floor, and then they watched as those noodle wheels rolled right into a crack in the chimney floor. All six soot balls stepped out of the now broken skate. Wigglesnook sighed, Frigglepuffen cried, Gurrlehick stomped his foot, Eckinmoot heaved that broken sneaker off the mountain of socks, and Poogey the youngest of them all sat down and tied the laces of his green and white boots. "At least our walking boots were a good choice, right brother Gurrglehick," little Poogey teased. "Are you suggesting I have poor taste in sneaker-skates little soot," Gurrglehick growled, bending to tie the laces of his red and white boots. "Well, if the shoe fits, brother Gurrgle . . ." Poogey had no time to finish his cliche for he was being chased down the mountain by his elder brother. The remaining soot balls all laughed at the littlest soot ball brother's game. Together, as always, the Brothers Soot walked back home to their beloved Chimney in their trusty red, green, and white boots.
