As a loyal follower in to path that is comedy, I find Gilgamesh a master of his profession. I do respect his character a lot, and do look to what he would do in many of my situations, which surprisingly happen a lot, and they do work they way they did for Gilgamesh.
Anywho, I'm straying from the point.
Gilgamesh has appeared in multiple Final Fantasy games, including remakes and spin-offs. Many people assume whatever, but not many actually know its the same Gilgamesh.
Let’s start from the beginning. Gilgamesh used to work under Ex-Death, but due to his failure to do one thing right, and his constant failure to stop bartz and Gaulf, he was banished dto the X-Dimension, which more or less is a pocket dimension between time and space if I remember right. Gilgamesh stated he has been looking for the way out and due to the dimension being unstable, Gilgamesh is assumed to have stumbled on to many different universes. The most notable appearances were in FFVIII and FFXII.
Assuming that he was able to travel, he still dies in V to save Bartz.
Looking at the time of his travels and his death, it is to be assumed that time in the X-Dimension and the multiple Universes he stumbled on to were two different things, resulting in his return to the void as if maybe a few seconds had gone by.
Another theory was that he didn't die, and when the void seemed to have collapse on itself, Gilgamesh gained minor power over the void to better aid him in his desperate search to find the legendary blade Excalibur which he had been most unfortunate in finding, often coming across the legendary fake replica of Excalibur, Excalipoor.
Many people asked about his appearances from each game and why he looks the way he does in each game. Looking at how he was designed in V, I am to believe that Square decided to be slick and say he takes another appearance as he moves into the world, being a natural reaction to being in a foreign dimension. This makes sense as the way he looked (Though anyway he looked) would be off and may disrupt the natural order, so his body shifted to his surroundings in a sort of quick evolutionary reaction to dimension hopping.
Lately, there has been talk about his replacing Sephiroth in Birth By Sleep. Though this is just a rumor, I can only hope for the best and he appears as an optional boss.
