"...doesn't mean I can't see."..::Tess Zelia ~ The blind girl::.. ...This is her story. A young girl is born, and a doctor smiles at her mother. "Did you have any names in mind?" he asked gently, and the mother smiled, nodding weakly. "Yes...her name is Tess..." she nodded, and the doctor smiled back. "What a lovely name." he replied softly, glancing gently at the newborn in the newly decreed mother's arms. "Mr. Harper...Has my husband...has Jeff returned yet?" she asked, closing her eyes. For a moment, she looked truly at peace. I'm sorry, no...he said he'd be right back, bu- he started, but was abruptly cut off. "But...I...Tess! Can you go find him? Please?" the woman laying in the bed pleaded. The doctor frowned at her. "I'm sure he'll be back soon. His stomach must just be upset, ma'm...please do not stress yourself...you'll worry the baby." he informed her, glancing down at the infant in her arms with worried eyes.
The mother lay there for a while. It felt like an eternity. However, the father -- Jeff -- never did show up. Had he really ditched them, his own daughter? It was the bitter truth, and only the first terrible event lined up for the infant that, for now, lay haplessly in her mother's warm arms.

~ Chapter One ~We'll start where things really do go down hill, since her first few years on this Earth went by pretty smoothly- her mother tried the best she could to raise her during these years, just as well as she could with a partner by her side. The key word here being 'tried'...even though her attempts were successful, she began to yearn for a man to be there by her side. Someone to help her up when she fell...raising a child was hard. So, why don't we go to when her mother began -- much to Tess's dismay -- courting again?
~~
"I'll be right back, okay? Miss Julie will babysit you, don't worry..." Sally; Tess's mother, told her softly. She stroked Tess's strawberry-blond hair with one hand, the other hand turning the door knob. "Bu...bu...but...when will you be back? Tess asked, her dull, light-blue eyes looking up at Sally sadly. "Awh, don't look at me like that, Tess...Miss Julie will take good care of you. I'll be back before you wake up in the morning, 'kay?" she told her, and Tess nodded. So, Sally left, all 'dolled up' in a sapphire blue dress and sparkling make-up.
The night went by quickly, Julie and Tess playing many games; one of Tess's favourites being the scavenger hunt. She liked to pretend she was a feline of some sort, darting her eyes around and pretending to have some sort of stealth before she seized the item she had been looking for. Soon, it was time for bed. Tess was tucked in under her covers and fell fast asleep dreaming of her mother's return.
The next morning, a few minutes past 7:00 am, Tess ran downstairs to tell her parents of the fun she had had with Julie. However, the babysitter was fast asleep on the couch, a worried look caked onto her tanned face. "Julie!!!" Tess cried, her hands clenching into tiny fists by her sides. Had her mom...lied to her? In her young eyes, it was almost immediately Julie's fault - her mother couldn't of done anything wrong. Not after all of the love and care she had poured into Tess's youthful life.
The teenager groaned, her emerald eyes flickering open. A quick, confused look around the room, and she had groggily sat up. "Wha...what...?" she murmured. "Mommy isn't back yet!" Tess cried, and Julie's eyes widened as she finally understood the scenario she was in. Julie hesitated, not knowing what to say; or too tired to say anything at all. "Mommy isn't-" Tess started again, but this time Julie shushed her. "I know, I know...I heard you the first time..." the older female grumbled, glancing at the watch on her wrist. "Not even 7:30...ugh...and where the hell is Miss...or Mizz...Sally...? She said she'd be back by 3 at the latest...this isn't good... she thought to herself grumpily, a tinge of worry tainting her mind.

(doesn't wanna mention copyright things... ;D )
The two sat across from each other at the table, slowly eating their 'Loops o' Fruit'. Both were silent, after Tess realized nothing she could do would bring her mom back any sooner. "You know what, that's it. It's too quiet." Julie finally said, standing up. Tess munched on her Loops o' Fruit, her eyes following her babysitter. "What are you going to do, Julie?" she asked innocently, and Julie stared at her for a long time before sitting back down and sighing. "Never mind...But please, can't you look a little happier?" Julie suggested, gesturing with her hand. "But Julie isn't smiling, either! You look like you're going to be sick..." Tess stated sadly, placing another spoonful of cereal in her mouth. The babysitter just groaned, looking at her bowl of cereal in disgust while spinning the spoon around in the milk -- watching the purple loop go round, and round, and round. It was almost like their conversations.
Suddenly, there was a knock at the door. Both girls stood up immediately. "I'll get it!" the both cried at once, both as eager as each other, then looking at each other. "I'll get it..." Julie said again, quieter. Tess nodded and sunk back into the kitchen chair -- still studying the door carefully.
The brunette opened the door, stepping back in shock when she realized two policemen were there to greet her; not Tess's mother...the person whom would let her go home, the person whom had money to pay her. Tess seemed disappointed, too, frowning at the sight the doorway had to offer.
"Yes...?" Julie asked weakly, her heart skipping a beat. She'd babysat many times before, and this had never happened. She remembered learning about emergency situations way back when she was 13, taking her babysitter's course. What do you do when two armed men suddenly show up at your 'client's' house? "We are coming in." one told her calmly, showing her his authority. She nodded, gesturing towards the living room with her hand. "N-not a problem, officers." she replied.
Tess, on the other hand, had gotten up from her seat and wandered over to the two men despite Julie's desperate glares to get her out of the way. "Excuse me, Mr. Police Man..." she asked, and the two men looked at her with a look of sympathy and curiosity. "She doesn't know, does she?" one of them murmured to the other, and the other shook his head. "Do you know where my mommy is?" she asked, her tone immaculately polite; and yet both men grimaced as if they were in pain.
Julie's eyes shifted from Tess, asking about her mother, to the grim faces on the policemen. "No...no...that's not-!! That's not why they're here!" she tried to assure herself swiftly, prying away the panic that was trying to choke her. Her eyes watched Tess carefully. She seemed so pure and innocent. If something happened like that... what would this girl's future be like? Would it be possible to live completely untainted in a world like their's? Julie's chocolate-brown optics followed the diamond-like patterns in the carpet, a touch of sadness in them. "I have to stop being so negative. It was probably just a coincidence..."
"Tess, can you go up to your room, please?" Julie requested suddenly. Everyone stared at her. All of a sudden, she had felt the urge to protect Tess. She didn't want such a young child having to face anything harsh! It was possible to protect something like that, wasn't it? Julie sighed, opening her mouth to say something again. "Okay." Tess nodded, giving her a light smile. "Why...why does Julie look so sad? So worried?" she wondered. She walked off, looking over her shoulder to give Julie one more glance that seemed to say: "I'll be fine."
Julie sighed in relief, turning to the two police officers. "Um...is there anything I can help you with?" Julie asked carefully, studying their faces carefully. Their eyes seemed to hold something not found very often in others, eyes of wisdom and experience. Even though these two men didn't appear very old, Julie could tell that they had faced life or death situations many times -- whether it was to them, or to someone near them. They didn't carry around those guns for show.
"What are you doing in this house?" The darker-skinned of the two asked her, resting his elbows on his knees and leaning forwards as he took a seat. The other man quickly followed his example and took a seat on another chair nearby. When they were all sitting down near each other, Julie spoke again. "I was babysitting Tess for her mother." she told them carefully and slowly, very unnerved by their presence. "Please, relax." the other man told her, gently. He seemed younger than the other man in the way, brushing back jet-black hair with his long fingers.
