Hi, I am just starting to get into owing fish and have bought a 45g tank which I am hoping to make into a community tank. Right now I have a 5g tank with 5 neon tetras in it -please don't judge me, I didn't know anything when I first bought them and the guy at the pet store told me they'd be fine- they're the whole reason I bought a bigger tank; I feel awful for putting them in there. I've read lots of websites and even bought myself an encyclopedia about freshwater fish species to try and learn more. I know about cycling a tank and how to clean it now but none of the stuff I have read has talked about what fish are compatable with each other. My book tells me about their water requirements and has a short description temperments like "highly active" or "peaceful and social" but that's not really very helpful since a few hours ago I was planning on putting a betta in a tank with five dwarf gourami which I have learned would not be a good idea. If anyone could give me some help as to what fish would be happy in a community tank with my tetras I would be really grateful. I do prefer really colourful fish but any suggestion at all is awesome.

Dont worry, we've all gotten bad advice from pet stores rolleyes
For a 45 gallon tank, I'd do the following:
10 Neon Tetras 10 Panda Corries 10 Harlequin Rasboras 1 Angel Fish
Get a young Angel though, as if they are not raised with small fish, they will see them as snacks o.o lol
Pretty much, nothing aggressive. I have a Ram in with my Neons, and so far, it seems to be a great combination =)

Sure thing =D
What I always recommend it to go around to the stores you like, and see what they have and write down the fish that catch your eye, then go back home and look them all up.
Schooling fish tend to have low bioloads, meaning they dont poop a whole bunch, so you can usually have a lot of them. What really keeps you back is the amount of swimming space.
AqAdvisor.com is a good, rough, guide line for stocking your tank. You put in information like tank size and shape, and the number and types of filters you have, then you choose fish from the list and it tells you how stocked the tank is, and their general compatibility.

i agree with Akari_32, do not put a large angel with the tetras, that's how (thanks to bad pet store advice) i lost my neon tetras. there are many many options for stocking a tank that size but Akari_32's suggestion is a good one. if you want a catfish, do not get a chinese algae eater, as they attach themselves to a single angel. it is best to either get one or three angels, if you get two they gang up and fight constantly.
