"That's all for today! Class dismissed forever!" the high school teacher waved at his graduating students from the wooden stage. Everyone threw up their black caps with a hearty cheer. School was over for them, and they were happy about that. However, Shelby Sholot was totally not.
"HIIIEEEE!" she screamed, but no one heard her. The cheers from the graduates, the staff of the school, and the guardians muffled her cries of worry for the next stage in her own life. Her peers began to exit to the sides. The seats around her were emptying quickly. She gasped at the realization of her being the only one left in the center. She dropped down onto the dusty ground and began to crawl out of the "S" row. Shelby was not ready for her mother to snap a picture of her being all alone in the baseball field decorated with rows and columns of metal chairs. Her mother would make that picture the cover of their turkey cards, Santa cards, party invitations, birthday cards, and finally Shelby's own wedding!
Shelby finally escaped out of the row, but she cringed at whose feet she was facing. "Um, Shelby? Why are you covered in dust?" it was Katie Creek, her best friend. Shelby looked up to see Katie's face being so high up into the sky and blocking the sun.
Then, there was a flash of light and a squeal from Mrs. Sholot. "Darling, this is going to be on the front of our turkey cards!" she waved around her digital camera and pranced around. Her daughter groaned. With the help of Katie, she stood up. She began patting the brown splotches off of her gown. After Mrs. Sholot's ritual dance, she pulled her daughter and Katie into a big hug, "Aw! You guys are all grown up! What'll you guys be?"
"Um," Katie shot an awkward smile at her friend's mother, "I guess I'll be a mercenary."
"What!?" Shelby screeched and threw her arms up. "Katie, how can you be a mercenary! Are you sure about being one? It's a dangerous job, you know?"
"I know. I've thought long and hard about being a mercenary. I was thinking of working on Gramps' farm, but I want to do something exciting."
Mrs. Sholot perked up, "The mercenary business is fast pace! It's a good decision, Katie." She looked over her daughter and guessed that she had no idea what career she wanted to pursue. "Why don't you apprentice under me?"
She made a face, "I don't want to be a nurse, Mom!"
"Alright, so you know what you don't want to be. That's a start," she released the two girls and patted her daughter on the shoulder. "You've got time to think, darling. Now, I'll be at the hospital if you two gals need me." She waved and left the two girls to find out what job Shelby should get.

Two buses later and a crosswalk, Shelby and Katie arrived to the job convention at a five star hotel. The abnormally tall one tipped her cow-made hat at the vast and marble tiled lobby. "Why I'll be a worm's uncle to stay here," her eyes seemed to sparkle at the golden items strung around the sensual and quick paced hotel. The flashes of an employee's red clothing made Katie want to ask for assistance. "Yooohoo!" she waved her hat about, "May I get some service here?"
A bellboy in purple stepped up to the two gals. "Hi there! Welcome to Palace of Kings! How may I be a service to you?" he greeted with a bow. Katie happened to look away and with her hand propped up horizontally on her forehead, she sought for the red flair. The bellboy blinked, "Er, miss? What are you looking for?" Shelby only sagged and felt sympathy for the bellboy.
"Ah," Katie finally gave her attention to the bellboy who just wanted to help, "I'm looking for that person wearing that red," she tried to point, but that person was buzzing around too fast. "Urgh! That person! No, that one!" she said, as she kept on pointing a different place in the lobby.
The bellboy smiled, "That's not our hotel's employees. In fact, our uniform colors are purple and gold."
"So, who is that?" Shelby asked.
"A courier," he responded with simplicity. "I believe she's Sylvia Silat."
Katie's eyes almost expanded too wide for their sockets, "A . . . courier!? You mean those delivery women? Wow, I've always wanted to see one!" Her excitement faded. "Anyway, I've now seen one. Can you point the way to the career convention?"
"Whoa whoa!" the other girl exclaimed and grabbed Katie to stay. "Shouldn't we," she hesitated, "talk to her?" Her friend and the bellboy blinked at the girl.
"Alright," the cowgirl placed her hat back on her head. "This'll be my first mission as mercenary! To get that Sylvia for you!" she peered around to find the red flairs. When she did, she unhooked her rope from her belt and charged towards the red. "Hold it, you!" she hollered, while fixing her rope into a lasso. She hurdled over pots of plants and also people, as she chased the courier. However, the courier didn't notice a cowgirl swinging a lasso in the air with the incentive to catch her. After all, she was too busy looking at the list!
The bellboy kept a sincere smile, "I could have rung Miss Silat up to the front for you guys." Shelby just cringed when a loud, SCREECH and BANG and SMASH, could be heard.

"So, you have to wash all of these dishes," the manager of the hotel said with a pleasant smile. She directed the two girls' attention to a room with dishes stacked to the ceiling. Before leaving, the manager gave a helpful tip to the girls, "You better finish up soon. The dinner service is going to happen soon, and we have a wedding booked."
Katie gaped, "What!" she exclaimed once the manager left. "I only broke one pot, but it's not my fault! The floor was wet!"
"At least, we don't have to go into debt and have our mothers know," Shelby shrugged with a smile and picked up a brand new sponge. She reached for the bottle of soap, but her friend grabbed it before her. Katie grabbed the sponge out of Shelby's hand and pour the soap onto her sponge. Shelby's eyes widened, "What are you doing, Katie? I thought we're going to do this together?" She felt her pony tail.
"Nuh-uh, I'm the mercenary, Shelby! I failed to lasso Courier Silat. This be my punishment." She sat down onto a little stool that could barely hold her. The abnormal girl toppled over onto the floor, "Umph!" She started to get back up and try to sit on the stool, but fell over again. "They should really start making bigger furnishings," she finally saw her friend staring in confusion. "Go."
"Go where?" she questioned. It seemed she was not aware of own feelings.
Katie rolled her eyes, "Go get that courier to talk to you!" The other girl asked again about why Katie was telling her to leave and go talk to Courier Silat. In response, Katie smacked her lips and rubbed the soapy sponge on a dirty dish, "'Cause you wanted to talk to her. Now, I want you to talk to her. Come to think of it, there was a time when we were little girls that you said you wanted to be a courier," but Shelby didn't hear that part because she was already out the door and running back to the hotel lobby!
"I don't know why I'm doing this!" she shouted, as she ran in lightening speed.

SMACK! So, the protagonist of this story rammed into a person like defense in football and tackled that innocent person. She groaned and pushed herself up, noticing she was on top of the person she knocked down. Shelby gagged and began bowing her head up and down, "I'm so sorry! I didn't mean to do that!" The person began chuckling at her, causing her to think that he means to sue her for causing his ribs to break. "I don't have money or job, but my mother's nurse! Maybe, she can help you for free!" she began to redden. "Actually, don't tell my mom! She'll be so mad! Then, Katie's mother would know about this! Misses Creek is scary sometimes!" she hid her face with her hands. "Hah, cheer up, kid!" he pulled Shelby's hands off of her sizzling hot face. "Oh! Hi-dy do! What a face! 'Tis like the gods sculpted your face!" he was admiring Shelby's face when he also had a handsome look. He was even more handsome than Shelby. "So!" he perked up and picked up Shelby. He also stood up with Shelby in his arms and her legs barely touching the marble floor, "Need me to help you find your mum?" "Er!" she croaked. It was incredibly embarrassing to be held like a child. Before she could tell this sexy man to put her down, a man with red hair and a bloody mud colored cap came to her rescue! Shelby thought it was extremely dream-like to have two handsome men around her. In fact, Lida did have some nice suitors, but most of them were average or too old for young Shelby. But, dang! They were smokin' hot guys who surpassed the models in Vague. "Put her down!" the red head said with dignity. Once the other man did, this guy grimaced, "You better apologize to this lady! She's probably traumatized by you holding her like that. Besides, she's not a child like you think everyone is, except," he paused and raised an eyebrow in question, "Opal." The mention that name made him look even more grumpy. The man who picked up Shelby smiled, "I have to apologize for touching you like that. When I see someone cute like you, I can't help myself." He started caressing Shelby's head, "Do you have a boyfriend? Lover?" The girl shook her head to his delight. "Wow! What's your name? Maybe, you can give me your-" And, he was smacked by the red head. "Stop that. We should get to that career convention and that booth," he rolled his eyes. "We're going to be late." "I'm Shelby Sholot," she answered loudly with a red face. "Actually, I was going to the career convention, but I'm not sure about-?" The red head rudely interrupted her, "Not sure about what?" "About what kind of job I should get. I don't know what to be." The taller man chuckled and patted her head, "When I was your age, I didn't know what I wanted to be either! But, one day I decided to be a rancher. I ranched so hard that I'm pretty sure you'd even know my name. Snail Mail, does it ring a bell?" "SNAIL MAIL?" Shelby shouted. Snail Mail was a pretty famous rancher with enormous piles of money in his super sized wallet. He used his animals for food in his fast food joints. "Yup! That's who I am. Hey, Mars? Tell her how you decided to be an inventor or whatever you do." The red head named Mars blinked, "I guess I like making things with a screwdriver and machines." He soon growled, "Come on! Let's go!" Snail Mail waved, "Bye, bye, Shelby Sholot! Perhaps, we can meet again?"

After the two delicious-looking men left, Shelby continued her quest to talk to Courier Sylvia Sholot because she didn't know kind of job she wanted to do when in fact, her true desire to become a courier was locked away deep inside of her. That was a long sentence of introduction. Now, Shelby saw a glimpse of red by the entrance of the hotel. She dashed over there and skidded to a stop, possibly carving onto the marble floor.
"Please, wait!"
Unfortunately, it wasn't Sylvia or a courier. "What a cute girl! You want to get a makeup kit and makeover, eh? What's your name?"
"Shelby Sholot." This girl had a habit of telling strangers her full name. At least, she didn't tell people where she lived.
"I guess I'll call you Shelby-bee! I'm Duckie Bouquet. I'm here for the career convention. I have a booth where I give great information to people about the great career of makeup," the lady twirled her freshly dyed red hair about. "Let me give you a quick makeover," before Shelby could give her consent or protest, Duckie was already done. She held up the mirror for the girl to see the makeup, "I used blush and skin colored eyeliner to amplify your cuteness. Also, I used pale pink for your lips. You're a young girl, so you need lighter colors. Dark colors are for mature women, but they don't suit you!" She put a kit into Shelby's hand. "I'm running late, so I have to go! Bye, Shelby-bee!"
It was a strange encounter that gave Shelby more confidence to talk to Courier Silat about possibly becoming a courier. However, red flashes were no where to be found in the hotel! What was Shelby going to do?!

"Oh no! What am I going to do?" Courier Silat was no where to be seen, but Shelby realized in her panic that couriers have other destinations to go and she kept on taking so long with talking to strangers and telling her name. She marched on right out of the hotel doors and hit the streets. Sure, she didn't know where the courier's stops may be at, but people would have seen her. "Um," she decided to ask a group of young men around her age. They were wearing loose jeans with belts hanging off; they looked and smelled like trouble because of the heavy cologne wafting off of them. "Did any of you seen a courier run out of this hotel?" At first, they were talking about something about cars, unscrewing something, and attaching the wires to a certain way and driving away. Shelby didn't understand city folk talk. After Shelby's interruption, they were silent, making Shelby think she was extremely rude. Obviously, that was not the case. "Er, sorry for interrupting," she slowly backed away in her white booty shorts and high white boots. However, running away from the awkward situation was out of the question, "Where are you going?" One of the punks somehow and seemingly teleported behind poor Shelby, causing her accidentally bump into him. The punks began to whistle and cheer. "Um, away," she blurted out, stepping away from the man behind her. Another man stepped forward, but she turned to a hole in the crowd and proceeded to leave. The man was behind her pushed her back against a wall and pinned her there with his hands, "I thought you wanted to know where a courier went. What's wrong?" "Well! A lot of things!" she lifted her leg and kicked him right in the nuts! Yet, the man just laughed. Shelby started to think that he may have a problem down there or a fetish of these sorts of things. "Are you alright?" Then, everyone else laughed. "I have a cup on, you know? But, you're a cute one. Why don't you stay and play with us for a while?" he touched her face. "Besides, you tried to assault me. You're not from around here, right? We'll do something so terrible that you'll be sorry about turning us down when we're nice right now." Shelby didn't have time to play, so she declined right away. "Sorry, I can't." "Boohoo!" the guy stuck out his tongue. "Come on, guys! Let's punish this girl!"

A wet rubber glove smacked into the side of the man's face. It slowly slid off of his face and limply fell onto the floor. The man pushed himself off of the wall and turned to face the person who threw the glove. "There's more where that came from, you crop worms!" Katie Creek hissed with only one hand wearing a rubber glove. "Get away from my Shelby!" the mercenary-wannabe dashed over to block the punks from her friend. With her arms out like a mother bird. "I thought something was wrong. My merc senses were tingling when I was on that last dish."
"Katie!" she gasped with a smile. Her friend had saved the day by washing all the dishes and now, fighting off these punks! "I've lost sight of Sylvia, so I hit the streets."
"Understandable," Katie quickly nodded. "You can go. I saw a glimpse of her around that corner of the street. I'll distract these crows like a dang good scarecrow." So, Shelby ran off. . . to her meet her dream!
The punks blinked at the girl towering over them. "You're pretty tall! You should pick a fight with someone your height!" they said, but Katie didn't listen and proceeded to beat them to a pulp like oranges!

Around the corner, Shelby found herself almost knocking a young man and the giant box of cake in his hands off the street. "Oh, no! I'm so sorry about that! Are you alright? I didn't mean to almost knock you down!" she winced at the man trying to balance himself.
"No worries!" he sang back. "You're fast! I thought you were a courier for a moment. Buzzing by, I'd say." He had a name card pinned to his shirt, 'Lucas'.
"Eh?" The moment he said that made Shelby feel great. No, better than great! If she was a flower, then he was the morning sun causing her to bloom. He was like the opposite of the sandman who causes dreams; he's the person who wakes the people from the dreary sleep and gives a cheery and relaxed feeling. "You thought I was a courier?" she whispered out of awe.
He nodded, "Mhm. Like her," he pointed across the street to a courier, who was apparently taking a break on her moped.
Shelby turned her attention to the courier sitting across the street. To her surprise, it was Courier Silat! Her heart skipped a beat, while her body lurched forward an inch towards the crosswalk. However, she had to thank the man. When she turned her head back, he was no longer. Gone without a trace. "Ah," for a moment there, she had believed she had taken too long with admiring Sylvia over there. She only smiled and spoke under her breath, "Thank you, Lucas whoever you are."
Shelby crossed the street and stood in front of the courier, who she quested to meet. Her heart didn't beat rapidly because she had confidence from all of the people she encountered today. It was first her mother who gave her this advice, "so you know what you don't want to be. That's a start-"; there was the bellboy who told her who the red head was; Katie who supported her like a rock; Mail Snail and Mars with their passions; Duckie with the makeover and the kit; Lucas who mistook her for a mercenary; and finally . . .
The girl bowed down to the courier and said, "Thank you for appearing in front of me and letting me know what I want to have passion in. I want to be courier like you. Please, let me be your apprentice!"
So, that was how Shelby Sholot became an apprentice courier under Sylvia Silat's care.
