WHAT DOES MARRIAGE MEAN TO MOST CHRISTIANS?
Those of us, who believe the Bible is God's Holy Word, inspired by God's Holy Spirit to be put into writing as it was impressed upon the elders of the church from the earliest of times.
We believe, as God presented His commands to Moses, that marriage was originally ordained and commanded to be between a MAN and a WOMAN.
Genesis 2:23-24 reads as follows:
And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man. Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.
As it was in the beginning, so it continued. There were times, throughout the Bible history when some men and women rebelled against the Word of God and thought they knew better than God's followers how to live their lives.
The apostle Paul wrote about such rebellious people in his letter to the church at Rome. In the very first chapter of this letter to the Romans, Paul had this to say in Romans 1:24-28.
Romans 1:24 Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves:
Romans 1:25 Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.
Romans 1:26 For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature:
Romans 1:27 And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the women, burned in their lust one toward another, men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.
Romans 1:28 And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;
The 18th Century Anglican Pastor, educator and hymn writer gave us his thoughts about marriage and the accepted behavior of men and women this way: "And likewise their males, leaving the natural use of the female, have been inflammed with the most scandalous and abominable desires towards each other, males perpetrating that which is most shameful to mention and detestable to think of, and receiving in themselves the just recompense of their error, in that stupidity and degeneracy of mind to which they were evidently left."
Why do I even bring up the subject?
Our Supreme Court in Washington D.C. is, right now, taking under consideration laws dealing with whether marriage should remain what Christians with priciples believe marriages should be.
There are television ads running now that are designed to make you believe that marriage has many forms.
While we are called to love sinners, we are not obliged to love sin.
Sin has a way of convincing people that God's Word can be made to fit almost any opinion.
I'm persuaded; God has not changed HIS opinion or His Word.
Your brother in Christ,
