Suddenly, I was enlightened - Myself, right when writing these words.

We don't have any tips for people wanting to create a new thread here! How careless!

First, I'd like to give some simple guidelines. Then, I'll work out an easy checklist for an understandable beginning for your RP. Finally, I request everyone who has made an RP or run an RPG story to come and give out suggestions and comments of what have been good ways to manintain your own RPs alive.

Quick guidelines to an understandable RP proposal

  • Don't write evrything in a long post. Split it between as many as you need.
  • You have 15 posts in the first page. Try to avoid exceeding that space.
  • Have a clear idea of what you want to achieve with the game. The more open you leave it, the more difficult it will be to mantain the characters united and focused.
  • Write well. Write clearly. Write with simple words. the best we can understand you, the best we will play.
  • Give every chracter a reson to be. The video games can turn around a single characetr or couple, and the other characters might be worth slightly more than a couple nice moments and a bunck of useful skills. But here, we all want to have fun and a time on the spotlight.
  • Take into account that the players won't like being bossed around all the time. Give them some free reign on what to do from time to time.
  • Be ready to be surprised. Players tend to do WEIRD things.

Well, I think 7 is good enough.

Well, more organized and developed thought into this post....

First thing you ought to have is an idea. A coherent, organized, even if simple or silly idea. But you must have it.

With your idea, then you can begin organizing the game. In which gameworld (even if a new one or a mix of everything). In which time frame. Which characters can be played with. What will the taste of the game will be (dungeon crawl? angsty novel? doom anytime now? the heroes of the world?).

Once you have all the information available, then you should split it logically.... an adorned organization would be like...

Post # 1 - Prelude (IC) and introduction (OOC).
Post # 2 - Explanation of what the game is about and the world in general.
Post # 3 - Characters and simple mechanics.
Post # 4 - Characters' information and their players.
Post # 5 - Skim of what the game will be about and how does it begin.

One of the most important things to have in mind throughout the RP is that all the players are important, and should have roughly the same importance.

So, remember. If you have a character in the game, don't make it the most important one. Make him/her important, but not the star of the show. Trust me, that prompts you to give off unfair advantages to said character without even planning to.

And of course, rewards along the way. Remember that characters develop gradually and slowly become better. Allow the characters that advantage of advancement and they'll be more appealing every time.

*Steals this post to add comments from below*

Extra tip from people who've gifted us some more time to add to those brief helps up there. I'll add some extras (hehe)

Pilotslover
- Respect the choices of your RP'ers when it comes to the portrayal of a character.

Comes along the "don't lead your players" above.... when we are playing a character, we want to be able to decide all his/her actions.... Being led too much tends to make players bitter.

Tearin
- Have fun

Of course! if we don't have fun, then why are we PLAYING a GAME?

Blue Elec
- Don't be afraid to ask for help.

Specially if you find the game's stalling.... maybe someone around may have an idea that can push the story further. Also, remember asking your involved players about what they wish to see in the game.

Kyou Nitsune
- It helps to have your story planned out in ahead. You may not know exactly how you'll get from point A to point D, but always have a few steps planned out in ahead. Plot holes can be really messy, and they're usually the cause of death in most RPs.

Specially, think about why do the evil guys do what they do You may find that player who takes a beaten enemy and shakes him, demanding an explanation.... you'd better have one wink

Kyou Nitsune
- Teaming up with someone to make an RP is a lot of fun, and helps take a load off your shoulders. But if you decide to work along side someone else, always be sure to know them well before you decide to commit to them. It always stinks to get someone who won't even take a look at the RP when they have nothing to do. If you decide to work with someone, be sure you can trust them first.

Decronite
- Use mistakes to your advantage, the best part about free form RP is that anything can happen, even if things arent going to plan you can always muck it up even more, nothing is more fun the digging yourself deeper and deeper into new ideas, play off your players, they move the story not you. And also remember foreshadowing is a good idea sometimes leads people into a false sense of what's to come and makes things twice as fun when it's something completly different.

Think about everything the players have left incomplete.... ever read the Unending Story? (if you haven't, do so now! I command it!) Every player always leaves loose ends once in a while (some may leave a lot and quite frequently). Remember that enemy who wasn't killed? bring him back. Remember that random peasant killed for a mistake? make some family member go looking for revenge against the characters.... every loose end may bring a new story.
