"The border between Life and Death is growing weaker."
Kerrigor remains sealed, Orannis is bound, the Old Kingdom has flourished for years since the Great Battle. Somehow, though the Charter remains infinite, Death is in danger. Never before has anything escaped the 9th Gate...But something is finding its way from the depths of the River. The Clayr has Seen its escape. But a new hope has come to light. The Seven are being reborn. The eighth, Yrael, has been bound once more by Ranna. While Mogget sleeps, and Ranna has been born to the Abhorsen clan, Lirael begins her successor's training. The girl was Seen before she was born. Kibeth's soapstone figure was used to return The Disreputable Dog. Two of the Seven are known.
Unfortunately, things are never easy. The Clayr cannot find the remaining Five. The only thing they know, is that they have all been reborn. Their ages...their faces...their names...None of which can be Seen. The only thing keeping the Old Kingdom from panic is the words of the Clayr: "The Seven will find Us themselves. They will reveal themselves in time. When, where, and how, We do not know. They may, or may not, find Us before It escapes. We See no more."
The girl who was Ranna has reached the age of 15. Her training has been tough. Tougher than that of any Abhorsen before her. Lirael has grown tired. She retains her power and strength, but age has begun to catch up to her. Now past her prime, and the hour of Liana's 16th birthday approaching, Lirael is preparing to hand over much of her workload to Liana. Liana's duties will be doubled as she takes the title of Mage (Head) Abhorsen. Will things go off without a hitch? Will the girl who Ranna chose be able to handle life as the Mage Abhorsen? Will Kibeth regain her strength? Will Mogget sleep through it all? Will the remaining Five find us in time?
