If there was a drooling icon, I would describe it as such.
It all really depends on how you look at your games. Indeed, XII seems to be breaking a few rules--so-to-speak--with the tossing away of the turn system. Kind of...there's still the time bar--but that's something that people who play Warcraft and my fellow Guild Wars peeps know about.
When I was gushing to the (poor abused) EBGames manager, he described it as Squeenix breaking away from Sony. And I find him to be quite right.
In all actuality, I think they spent a lot of time putting the character together to make those wonderful, layered people we all love.
You still have your excruciatingly long quests (Okay....so half the time I was chasing Giza Bunnies...but...), your somewhat typical villains, the henchmen, and your ever-present mythological references (the first one having been found while I was looking for a picture of Larsa).
Yet, people argue against--just as they did with the recent FFVII compilations--all this.
Yes, they've broken away from giving their characters predominately Asiatic features, yes they've based the whole scene (as you mentioned before, Kyou) on a completely different part of the world than what they've done before/
But! Look at how friggen in-depth this game is! The maps are even big enough to get lost in! (and that's what I get for trying to see if I could talk to every single Imperial Guard). Not to mention the sheer diversity of the peoples! ...I'll let PL and Elec (I'm still going to call you that...) judge the authenticity of the accents...but I think the main characters who have them are done well.
Ha ha...PL thought Balthier's accent was horrible and the guy's a Brit xd
And I will stop rambling now, I swear (it's the creme soda talking...). But, really, if you strip it down to the basics, it's still Final Fantasy. If they would've changed the name of the game itself, the entire thing still would've smacked of all the character/hero quest/mythological archetypes that steep every single one of the games (no matter how lame they are... crying ).
Actually...now that I stop to think about it instead of letting my fingers disconnect themselves from my spinal cord...it's all personal opinion/preference... sweatdrop

((Yes, PL likes to mention that to me alot...just like when DoC hadn't come out in England...))
Oh, and does anyone else notice this Macbeth-type pattern with the bad guys? I've seen slight allusions to it in earlier games , but I just now noticed it since I had to do a critical analysis of Macbeth in AP Lit.
Just to make sure I don't spoil it for my European bretheren, I shall be vague. And, to the rest of you, I'm talking about that whole thing with Gramis and Vayne.
Doesn't that almost remind you of Duncan making Macbeth Thane of Cawdor, yet naming his son, Malcolm Prince of Cumberland?
...wait...does anyone know what the Hell I was talking about just there? xp
Edit: Made a mistake--the other just had the usual hubris stuffs.

I haven't heard any news of a delay, though. If there was, the Europeans on the AC.net forums would've been screaming for blood.

Yeah I have to admit that there definately was a lot more layering of characters. I found myself falling in love with nearly every character I met. It really was in depth, but even after all the time its taken them to finish the game, I still feel like its incomplete.
There were a couple things I noticed that just seemed like they ran out of time. For example, the fact that Vayne tended to look like a skeleton made of cardboard boxes every other scene really pissed me off.
And the fact that you never actually get to go to Rossaria was really wierd too. confused All this talk about it and you never once run into it?
I also felt like there could have been so many more cities. You look at the world map, and there are really only Four. Bhujerba, Archades, Dalmaska, and that one port.
Not that I'm complaining about the quality of those cities. That, I must say, was amazing.
Another thing I felt fell short was explanation. I mean, the story doesnt leap so much that you're left completely in the dark, but every once and a while there's something they didn't properly explain. Example, The Occuria, they're barely even mentioned other then when you see Venat until you meet them. Similarly, what was the deal with Bahamut? It shows up with very little background, yet all the characters know what it is.
It just seemed strange there was so little explanation in these areas when there was so much background with all the characters. I would have also liked to have learned more about the two Solidor brothers who apparently divided Archades as well.
And the summons were a pretty big dissapointment too. Right after you first get one, its amazing, but then they quickly become obsolete and you have to replace it with a stronger one. Summons have always been my favorite aspect of Final Fantasy, and I was sad to see them loose their staple status in my battles.
Other than those few points though, those were my only complaints. Its still hard to compare with the others since it was sooo different.
The story was amazing, and it kept me interested through the whole thing. I think I've run into some of my favorite characters of all the series. Balthier was amazing, and suprisingly I loved Larsa just as much. I was rooting for him through the whole game. 3nodding
As for the Macbeth shtuff, I can't say. Haven't seen it in ages. Can't really remember it o.o"
....
I love cream soda....

If there was, the Europeans on the AC.net forums would've been screaming for blood. i wasn't fuelling the drunken english stereotype, merely the drunken Elec stereotype. And It's still early days yet, they waited till the week before KH2 was released to tell us it was getting delayed a month

I went and looked through the bgs of the VAs for XII, and I was really surprised at what I found. I'm going to post some for boredom's sake, and maybe it'll be slightly amusing to you, who knows.
Ashe
Kari Wahlgren: Shelke(deaaaaaaaath!), Fuu [Samurai Champloo], Robin [Witch Hunder Robin], Sakura! (zomg, Sakura!). It says she's in Zatchbell, too, but they don't say who she is. Setsuka [SCIII], and ect.
Dr. Cid
John Rafter Lee: MEIER LINK! (I luuuuuved Bloodlust!) Trevor Goodchild [Aeon Flux).
Al-Cid (*cough*FRUITCAKE*cough*)
David Rasner: Brother, Steng[Zatchbell]
Emperor Gramis
Roger Jackson: MOJO JOJO! (the Hell? Well...there goes any serious parts with him....)
Havharo
Chris Edgerly: CIIIIID! (teh Cid! W00tz!), Peter Potamus, three people in Celebrity Deathmatch, and he's a stand-up comedian--when the Hell did that happen and has anyone here in America with me heard of him?
Rasler
Andrew Philpot: D [from Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust--w00tz!],
Reks (*cough*Genderconfused?*cough*)
Yuri Lowenthal: Sasuke, Keigo, Son Goku, the Prince [Prince of Persia], Haseo [.hack//GU], and many many others.
Judge Bergan
Gary Martin: I dunno who he was...but he was in Mr. Bean...

John DiMaggio: Bender (you should all know who he is!), Dr.Drakken from Kim Possible---who saw that coming? Rico (Madagascar...one of the penguins),

Dwight Shultz: He's not credited, but he's in: Invader Zim, The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy, VHD: Bloodlust, and Ninja Scroll.
Reddas, Judge Zecht

Well, FFXII is amazing, because it is basically Star Wars... ((Also, sorry if I do/will spell people incorrectly)) Vaan = Luke Penelo = Leia/R2-D2 Ashe = Leia Balthier = Han Fran = Chewie Basche = Obi-Wan Ba'gaamdam = Boba Fett Vayne = Palpatine Judge Gerbranth = Darth Vader Larsia = Yoda
Should I go on?
Now, unlike Star Wars, it twisted the plot and such, and became and very deep and compelling story! Also, the Gambit system was interesting. At first, playing with it, I hated it. Like I hate my Science Professor, hate. Then, within 5 hours after playing the game, I came to love it like my Film Teacher... *drool*
Overall, it brought a good end to the PS2 FF games, and makes me confident that only more good will come on the PS3 or Wii, whichever they launch on... stare
But, on a side note, my favorite all around FF is X. Not X-2, just FFX...

Mmmmmmmmhhh, seems to be kind of a stretch to use Larsa as a parallel to Yoda. But otherwise...*stores into brain database of otherwise useless knowledge.*
And now I'm going to be imagining the Star Wars charatcers in place of the XII characters as I play...XD

You should note, all games, and movies have the same elements. Basically you could compare anything to anything and it would somehow make sense. Hell, you could pair them up with Futurama characters for PL and it would make sense!
Classic movies always make use of these characters, and I'll compare them to Star Wars for you.
The Villain - Darth Vader The Donor (provider) - Obe Kenobe The Helper - Han Solo The Princess (or sought-for person) and her father - Princess Leah The Dispatcher - R2 D2 The Hero or Victim- Luke Skywalker The False Hero - Darth Vader
