Joseph Stalin once said
Quote:
The press must grow day in and day out -- it is our Party's sharpest and most powerful weapon.

Which makes me wonder, what are your opinions on how the Press impacts the average Joe/Jill's political thought and philosophies?
When the media is biased, will it truly make the people biased in thought aswell?

Of course the media has an effect on the voters opinion. The media they are watching/listening to/seeing definately can make them think on way or the other. That's why we have so many political ads.

I have actually done extensive research in the area of "crime in the media" or "social forces and pressures' impact on media reporting." I just finished my thesis on it... but i haven't done any specifially on politics.

But I certainly believe the media has the power to influence opinions. For many people, the news media is their main, or only, source of information.

'When' the media is biased?
Sir, it is already biased. At least, a significant part of it is.

I think everyone will agree with me when I say that Air America is Liberal and Fox News is Conservative.
But lets look at other examples.

CNN recently did a small piece on Osama Bin Laden, detailing where he was, what had happened to him, etc.
The headline: 'Where's Obama?'
Whoops...they apologized, of course, but the damage had already been done (just as it was supposed to).
In the same light, I recently overheard a discussion about the '08 presidential elections. Someone brought up Obama, and the one response was:
'I don't think Americans will want to vote for a Black Muslim for president.'
Funny, considering Obama isn't even Muslim.

So indeed, the media is a powerful tool, both for and against corruption in government. It just depends who has control of it.
If the government has control, it is a propaganda machine extraordinaire.
If the media has itself, then it is a wonderful weapon to root out corruption, as evidenced by Murrow and McCarthy, and by the Watergate Scandal.
