So I was just looking up Evangelion on Wikipedia, and I noticed it mentioned that the series protayed Judeo-Christian beliefs(then again I already knew that), and also Judaism, Gnosticism, and some free masonry. If you do not know what Evangelion is, please the series is long and kinda difficult to explain, however you can find information about it on wikipedia under EVANGELION. Those of you who do know what it is, please speak of the theological aspects of the show, besides christianity if there are any that is.

Other than the fact that Eva was created by someone who was on some serious drugs, I can't think of any references (non-Judeo-Christian, that is) offhand.

It's still my favorite anime. xd

I think that might be a touch rude unless there's proof of it...Maybe you say it in humor but it does come with some serious implication. Some one can be profound or derranged and not be high.

I also think calling it Neon Genesis Evangelion in the first post might be better considering it's the full title, and the un-initiated might recognize it more speedilly.

Actually, he wasn't on drugs.

But he did have a complete emotional/mental breakdown around episode 20 or so, and it shows.

Hrm...yeah, it shows, all right. It got weirder, and less and less connected to any attempt at religious metaphor. Shinji was a shitty Messiah.

I don't think Shinji was supposed to be a messiah, I'm pretty sure he was supposed to actually be the antiChrist.

Really? I guess it's just how you interpret the series. I tend to view Gendou as more of an AC figure.

Gendou is more like the angel that brings forth the antiChrist. Also remember that one scene where Shinji and his robot are going crazy and there's a storm and s**t and the soldier on the radio thinks the devil is attacking them.

Like what, lithium? Hideaki Anno is a manic-depressive, but I don't know that he was on serious drugs. He's just crazy.

You bring a good point, but I suppose it depends on your interpretation. If you're speaking from just Episode 26, then he isn't a very good antiChrist. If you're talking about End of Eva, then...yeah, I could see it.

I never saw it as a religious allegory. I always saw it as a coming of age story...
