In addition to writing I am an avid Role Player. I was just wondering how many of you as well take part in this little game? I ask because I draw much inspiration and experience from role play and place it in my works as well as taking the experience from my works and siphoning it back off into my role playing as well as exchanging ideas with other writers about story lines and how to improve.

I can't say I ever really have but I've read people doing it. This is going to sound dumb but could you explain it? Do you pretend you are a character? or something like that? ninja

It does not actually sound dumb at all, that was the first question I asked when I learned about it.
Role Playing, in essence, is the creation of character(s) designed by a person. After that there are technically two different types of RP, Combat and Story. Combat is simple, trying to maneuver your character into a position where your opponent cannot possibly block, counter or dodge in any way and delivering a finishing blow. Simple and somewhat crude, but epic battle scenes have been made by the more skilled people who do this.
The more common is a Story type RP (abbreviation of Role Play) where someone develops a story line in which your design character(s) move around inside a world controlled by the creator who puts in motion events in the story that your character(s) in turn respond to and cause more events. This can be entertaining to some and dull to others.
In short, yes, you pretend to be a character. =P << I just had to take the long winded explanation didn't I?

What is it generally about? Anything? So is it kind of like... just talking or do you describe things too?

It's better to give a full explanation, then have someone getting confused. For Seraf: Here's an example from me: Ryu had created a jet stream that was continuely bringing them upwards. He could feel Tonks' arm wrap around Ryu's neck, lessening his breath, but he had to keep on going upwards. They started to shake as a turbulent stream of air passed by. He looked above and saw his mother and father. He rubbed his eyes because he knew it was an illusion, but they were still there. Behind them was his brother, the one in the cloak from the town. A couple seconds later, both of them fell to the 'ground', covered in blood. Ryu's eyes widened as his brother was making a fire spell above him and shot it down. It felt so real, as he started to drift backwards, towards the downside of the current.

It is generally about a story line with key points in it with room for characters to move around in. It is like you are writing the part of a character into a story, their actions, their thoughts, what they see, how they feel. Each person contributes to the story.

The complicated part tends to be story development (98% job of the creator) and character creation (100% of the character creator) after that it tends to be easier. Though I can attempt to explain any subtleties that may exist?

So someone will come up with a random story idea post it, then everyone creates characters to go on a quest or adventure (or whatever)....then you basically write a story together?

Or if you are like me you have long standing characters for genres. I could share but then it is 12 pages long =x I got bored in English class.

Tsuta So you have the same characters you use every time? You can have a different one in a new RP, but you stay the same character in the same RP generally.
