I read a lot of stories where people use other languages with English and I wish I could do that gonk
Having a hot french boy something would be entertaining to add!
Anyone ever written anything like that? Having a character of another language?
What about writing in another... dialect (Not sure if thats the write word...) but since I know we have a wide variety of people here from all over... Anyone from America ever try and write a British or Australian character or vice a versa?

I have dabbled in caloquialism (did I spell that right?) in writing and I have dabbled in a few languages (French and Japanese among them. I am attempting to move into Latin next) that I have helped to work on that skill. Also, having a father fluent in seven languages from Spanish to Bahasa Malay is helpful. =x

gonk Lucky! My brother knows French and Spanish but I don't trust him. I'd want him to say something like "I love you" and he would translate for me something like "You smell funny"

Hmmm well I could get away 'cause no offense to her but she is dumb as dirt. She once asked me where Central America was. Now, she is 20 years old and in college to be a teacher. Who doesn't know where Central America is?

It'd be a lot of fun to write for yourself and other who could speak the language, but wouldn't it get confusing if you couldn't understand what the characters were saying?

Well I've read a lot of romance stories where they will say one or two lines in an argument or something and not translate it. I think it adds to the tension.

Hmm nope never done that.. but it's mainly because I don't know how to do it and get it to seem natural... and I don't feel like translating every time I do it. (I only speak Swedish, English and German so I would HAVE to translate to avoid confusion.)
Besides I'm already writing all my stuff in my second language (english), why would I want to risk confusing myself even more? razz

I have a couple. Henry is half-French, half-Russian (same with his brother Jack) so he learned both languages and sometimes breaks out into either language, depending on his mood. (happy/romantic=French, stressed/depressed/disappointed=Russian).
Vivian is completely French and if she "keyed-up" as Michael puts it, she'll talk rapidly in French.
