Before we begin-I am dealing only with insults. Not withad hominems or with argumentum ad personam. The difference: the last two would be like me saying "anyone who supports abortion is a murderer!!!1!" and calling all pro-choicers murderers as my response as though that voided their arguments (I'm pro-choice, by the way. I just needed an example). An insult would be me saying "You're an a*****e", then moving on to deal with the argument.
Now, I've been into numerous threads where anyone who I disagree with just starts in with the insults as soon as I disagree with them. Most of the time, I don't do anything other than disagree with them, and I very rarely resort to name calling in return. However in my eyes, insulting the opposing side just makes you seem immature and weakens your argument.
What do you think?
EDIT: It's like adding someone to your ignore list just because you disagree with them. I'm currently in deabte with someone who may just have done this. I asked them to prove something, they're telling me I"m off topic for asking, and they might have just ignored me.
