Mouse (FYI, that's my character ^.^) wandered happily through her library, humming a little tune. She loved doing this; for some reason, it was fun to stroll around, make sure everything was in check (or as in check as things could be, with those bookshelves as rickety as they were), and simply enjoy the investment she'd made in that old, run-down library.

As she paced past one corner of the library, though, she could have sworn she heard a squeak. Curious, she turned back, listening carefully (which her mouse ears quite allowed). Still perplexed as to where exactly the noise had come from, Mouse made her way into the dark corner. Some areas in the library did not have proper lighting, and this was most definitely one of them. But she spotted the glint of something metallic and headed toward it. Aha! she thought, A doorknob!

She wrenched the door open, only to be bombarded with the racket of a thousand high-pitched squeaks and just as many feet scurrying along. And did she also hear...feathers?

Fortune allowed there to be an enormous skylight at the ceiling of the very tall, but not so big length- or widthwise room. She tilted her head and knelt down to inspect one of the creatures that had not managed to flee when she opened the door. It looked like her namesake, a cute little mouse, but it also looked as if it had...wings?!

Continuing to look around, Mouse noticed several other differences between these creatures and their rodent counterparts. For one thing, the babies had thick coats of fur like their parents. Only the youngest could not open their eyes. They had large and powerful back legs (Probably to help them push off the ground to fly, she thought.), and on the end of each mouse's tail, there was a paddle-like thing, a layer of tough skin, or something, that, she supposed, would probably be used to help the mice change directions when flying.

They were in multitudes of colors; some solid, some with cream-colored bellies, some with splotches of another color. And all of them...had different-colored wings.

"Aww!" Mouse couldn't help but gush at the hundreds of scared little eyes peeking out at her. "You're all so CUTE!" Suddenly, an idea popped into her head. If she thought they were cute, maybe others would! There were so many; she had a feeling she couldn't care for all of them...perhaps she could sell them?

"I wonder what they eat?" she wondered out loud. If they were like normal mice, they'd eat everything, of course, but by now Mouse had figured out that these creatures were most certainly not normal. Her question was answered when Kunque, Mouse's Dogtionari, came wandering into the room with a book in his mouth --- more specifically, a very large encyclopedia. "Big!" the puppy looked up at Mouse with eagerness in his eyes, waiting to hear what she had to say about his discovery of the 'big' book.

But no such thing was heard, as a flock of the mice swooped down and all began gnawing on the book.

Mouse looked around. The shelves in the room were empty, but she guessed that they had once been crowded with volumes. Because of their ability to fly, the mice had even cleaned off the uppermost shelves, leaving naught but a scrap of a book.

The girl stared incredulously. "They. Eat. Books."

However, it appeared they also ate other things, as Mouse tried to get them to let her keep some of their children. Finally, though, after about twenty boxes of crackers, they yielded, and appeared to be on good terms with Mouse.

She nodded with approval as she set up the sign advertising the mice in the front of the library, and made sure to include a clearly-written caution: "WARNING: THESE MICE LOVE BOOKS. FOR A SNACK."

BookMice come in fifteen solid colors, which are readily available at all times. The colors are:

*laughs at the random varying sizes of squares*

The price of these mice is 800g.

In addition, I have seen the occasional cream-bellied BookMouse running around. These are harder to come by, so
I charge 900g.

The spotted mice always have just one color of spots, but I don't think the colors are necessarily limited to any combinations. I've seen red-and-gray, honey-and-chocolate, and silver-and-blue, just to name a few of 'em.
These are also pretty rare, so I charge 950g.

You can purchase a BookMouse at any time. It's like a never-ending flatsale! ^.^

I think that's all...?

Pretty simple, ne? The personality of the BookMouse will be random. ^.^ It's more fun that way! biggrin

Okay, customs. These mice do not deviate from normal colors, HOWEVER, it is possible to dye their fur.
Keep in mind, though, that this cannot be passed on to offspring.
Customs run anywhere from 1k-3k, depending on complexity, etc.

Anything I forgot? This seems like such a short post...hmm... sweatdrop

As BookMice grow, the colors of their wings change. All BookMice are born with natural tendencies, but it's up to you to develop them. For instance, a calm and withdrawn mouse might be born with solid blue wings. But, with some RPing, you will be able to control whether those wings are blue with streaks of red, or blue fading into green. Of course, you don't have DIRECT control over the colors. (You can't just up and say, 'Well that means he'll have SPASTIC YELLOW wings now 'cause spastic yellow is cool!'). No, that's me. I color the wings based on the mouse's personality at the time it is grown.

Speaking of growing, most of what determines the growth of BookMice is RPing. If you make tons of posts, your mouse will grow fast. If you make a few, leave for a few weeks without telling us, and then come back and make a few more, yes, your BookMouse may grow, but, remember, it won't have nearly as detailed wings. I need a thorough idea of its personality to do that...

I'm really not sure what to call each stage of these BookMice, so I just decided to number them. Here's what I've observed about each stage:
Stage One: The mouse has just been born! It can't open its eyes, and its wings are most certainly NOT developed enough to fly. But, please keep in mind, these guys can bite! Better treat yours well.
Stage Two: Now the mice can see. Their wings are developing, but they can't fly yet. They might make a few attempts, though. Encourage them to try. It will help them build up the strength in their wings for later. It's important to interact with your BookMouse in this stage, as well as introduce it to others. The younger you tame your mouse, the easier it will be. Males at this stage are quieter than in later stages. They do like to roughhouse a lot, though. The females are also quiet, as well as shy. However, they can be playful once they get used to their surroundings. Some are almost as rambunctious as the males!
Stage Three: If they've practiced well, the BookMice should now be able to fly. Males love challenging each other to flying games (usually in an attempt to impress the females). This is the point at which they may or may undergo a noticeable change in personality. Females, on the other hand, are still playful, though just as quiet as before. They are shy and sweet, and especially loyal to their owners, if they have been treated well. Their reason for flying is usually to try to get something that pleases their owner or another BookMouse. Can't reach the apple on that tree? She'll fly up there and gnaw it off for you.
Stage Four: The mice are now fully grown. They should have excellent flying abilities, and may try to help younger BookMice learn how to fly. This is also the stage at which BookMice choose a mate. They are actually quite picky, and will keep their mates for life. Males have toned down a bit, and can learn to become more loving. Females generally remain similar to their previous stage, although some can change quite a bit.

If you are a loyal RPer, the colors of your mouse's wings will continue to change even once they have reached the adult stage. Yay!

Here's a silhouette-ish preview of all the stages:

Size note: BookMice are the same size as regular mice, generally. 3nodding

PREVIEWS:
Here are some previews of some of the colors/stages. Note the fact that the wings are not colored. xd Oh, or the tail. It'll be the same color as the wings.

As previously mentioned, RPing is important with these pets. Please RP literally, and try to maintain proper grammar and spelling (and don't get too mad if I or someone else corrects you).

There's not really a set 'world' or anything for these BookMice. Well, the library is actually from my Dogtionari shop, but you're not limited to that particular place; I'm not going to make you read everything in that shop too. sweatdrop

Oh, and please use past tense for this, and story format. When you're just talking (not RPing), it's fine to put your actions in asterisks *does so often*...but please leave it out of the RP.

Speaking of which, this thread is for everything --- RPing, chatting, auctions, whatever. (Unless I decide to change it so it's otherwise.) This helps me keep track of things. (And, I'm hoping, will at least somewhat diminish the need for bumps and such!) When you make your RP post, ((put it in double parentheses.)) This will help us keep track of what's side conversation and what's not.

Feel free to include other pets you may have in this RP. In fact, if you have a Dogtionari and RP with it here, this can affect how quickly it grows, and vice versa for RPing BookMice in the Dogtionari thread! whee At least, I'm hoping this will work out. I don't want to confuse anybody, so...we'll see.

I think that's about all there is to say...

Also, you may RP your BookMouse in THIS THREAD, which is a shopring I belong to. Yes, it also counts toward possible growth acceleration for the mouse. ^^ Just make sure you read the rules first. 3nodding

As previously mentioned, BookMice can breed once they are fully grown, and usually keep their mates for life.

Unlike normal mice, BookMice usually have very few young at a time. The typical litter can range from 1-4 mice. It's up to the parents to decide how many to keep and how many to sell, but if you keep them, they're 400g each. If you decide to sell them, they'll be sold at normal flatsale price and you'll get 100g of the profit.

The offspring will either look like one parent or the other, or, in some cases, end up being splotched with both colors. Ahh, and then there's the occasional oddball, with a completely random color...

The charge for breeding is 200g from each parent (or you can decide how to divide it up if you wish to do so differently).

You need to RP some type of courtship (which will vary depending on the personalities of the BookMice) before I will let them breed.

The amount of time between breeding and the birth of the offspring will vary depending on how lazy/busy I am. xd

And...I dunno if I'm missing any info...

Whee~! Yes, items which you may get either to affect your mouse (or to just plain make it look pretty. ^.^)
Most of them remain with the mouse forever, unless obvious or otherwise stated. xd

I need help with prices.

Ribbon/Bow - Tie a pretty bow of any color around your BookMouse's tail, neck, etc. You can also put on charms, a tag, a bell, etc. - 100g
Collar - Same as the above, but without the whole...bow-ish-ness. - 75g
Ring(s) - Ring(s) of any color that you can put around your BookMouse's tail. (Or around a front paw, I suppose) - 50g
Wings - I'm not sure why your BookMouse would need an extra set of wings, but hey... - 500g
Highlight Dye - Put any color highlights into your BookMouse's fur. - 100g
Mysterious Potion??? - I'm not sure what this will do to your BookMouse...use with caution! O_o - 2000g (<---but based on the price, you bet it'll do something strange! xd )

I'm also trying to come up with names for:
-Something to make the fur super-shiny - 100g
-Something to make the fur super-dull - 100g
-Something to hold the stage - 50g
-Something to accelerate growth - 100g
-Something to reverse growth - 100g

I need help coming up with more items, as well as names, and prices! Any ideas you have would be much appreciated! whee

User Image
Please note that her wings will not change color, no matter how much you RP her. wink

Anyway, what is the art contest, exactly? Well...let's see...
(1) You must draw, using ANY medium/media, a mouse or a BookMouse. Of course, BookMice are preferred. whee
(2) Try to be original with your designs/poses.
(3) Any style (realistic, anime, etc.) is fine, as long as it looks good.
(4) It does NOT have to be colored, but it can be. Whatever looks nice. 3nodding
(5) PM your entry to me or post it in this thread. I will put it up in an area set up for all entries.

ALL entries must be in BEFORE October 30th, at which time I will decide on a winner. wink Runner-up will get a two-colored BookMouse of their choice, and second runner-up will get a solid-colored BookMouse of their choice. biggrin

Other questions? PM me or simply post them in this thread!
