Mouse (FYI, that's my character ^.^) wandered happily through her library, humming a little tune. She loved doing this; for some reason, it was fun to stroll around, make sure everything was in check (or as in check as things could be, with those bookshelves as rickety as they were), and simply enjoy the investment she'd made in that old, run-down library.
As she paced past one corner of the library, though, she could have sworn she heard a squeak. Curious, she turned back, listening carefully (which her mouse ears quite allowed). Still perplexed as to where exactly the noise had come from, Mouse made her way into the dark corner. Some areas in the library did not have proper lighting, and this was most definitely one of them. But she spotted the glint of something metallic and headed toward it.
Aha! she thought,
A doorknob!
She wrenched the door open, only to be bombarded with the racket of a thousand high-pitched squeaks and just as many feet scurrying along. And did she also hear...feathers?
Fortune allowed there to be an enormous skylight at the ceiling of the very tall, but not so big length- or widthwise room. She tilted her head and knelt down to inspect one of the creatures that had not managed to flee when she opened the door. It looked like her namesake, a cute little mouse, but it also looked as if it had...wings?!
Continuing to look around, Mouse noticed several other differences between these creatures and their rodent counterparts. For one thing, the babies had thick coats of fur like their parents. Only the youngest could not open their eyes. They had large and powerful back legs (
Probably to help them push off the ground to fly, she thought.), and on the end of each mouse's tail, there was a paddle-like thing, a layer of tough skin, or something, that, she supposed, would probably be used to help the mice change directions when flying.
They were in multitudes of colors; some solid, some with cream-colored bellies, some with splotches of another color. And all of them...had different-colored wings.
"Aww!" Mouse couldn't help but gush at the hundreds of scared little eyes peeking out at her. "You're all so CUTE!" Suddenly, an idea popped into her head. If she thought they were cute, maybe others would! There were so many; she had a feeling she couldn't care for all of them...perhaps she could sell them?
"I wonder what they eat?" she wondered out loud. If they were like normal mice, they'd eat everything, of course, but by now Mouse had figured out that these creatures were most certainly not normal. Her question was answered when Kunque, Mouse's Dogtionari, came wandering into the room with a book in his mouth --- more specifically, a very large encyclopedia. "Big!" the puppy looked up at Mouse with eagerness in his eyes, waiting to hear what she had to say about his discovery of the 'big' book.
But no such thing was heard, as a flock of the mice swooped down and all began gnawing on the book.
Mouse looked around. The shelves in the room were empty, but she guessed that they had once been crowded with volumes. Because of their ability to fly, the mice had even cleaned off the uppermost shelves, leaving naught but a scrap of a book.
The girl stared incredulously. "They. Eat. Books."
However, it appeared they also ate other things, as Mouse tried to get them to let her keep some of their children. Finally, though, after about twenty boxes of crackers, they yielded, and appeared to be on good terms with Mouse.
She nodded with approval as she set up the sign advertising the mice in the front of the library, and made sure to include a clearly-written caution: "WARNING: THESE MICE LOVE BOOKS. FOR A SNACK."
