The actual legend
There once were three Goddesses. Their names were Din, Farore, and Naryu.
Din created the lands. Farore created the laws. Naryu created creatures to roam about the lands and to follow the laws.
Then the goddesses had an idea. They thought it would be neat to create three identical triangles and call them triforce pieces. One would contain wisdom, a second would contain courage, and the third would contain power. When the three were to be brought together, the fourth creature there would be granted a wish.
So, to a boy in a green tunic residing in the farming lands, they bestowed the triforce of courage.
To the Princess of the lands, they gave up the triforce of wisdom.
And to a man in the Gerudo desert, they bestowed the triforce of power.
When the goddesses went away to watch over these three, something they did not expect happened. When the man from the Gerudo desert became of age to marry, he only sought to take one who was unwilling. He wanted Zelda. However, she did not like men from the desert. She had her eyes set on the boy from the fields. So, the man from the desert grew very angry and therefore sought to use his power to cast the lands into darkness out of jealousy.
On top of that, he took the Princess without consent, raped her and then cast her into a deep sleep.
The boy in the fields did not like such actions, for they were cruel and so... our adventure begins.
