Author: Isaac Asimov The Foundation (series)
Author: Roger Zelazny The Amber Series
Author: Roger Zelazny Temple of Light
Author: Douglas Adams The Ultimate Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
Author: Grant Naylor Red Dwarf
Author: Ray Bradbury Farenheit 451
All of these won awards, but I don't feel like checking which ones at the moment. I love all of them. Actually, I reccommend anything by Isaac Asimov, Roger Zelazny, and Ray Bradbury. They're all amazing authors.

Alright, here's a series that I think you should read. It's the Pride of Chanur series by C.J. Cherryh. It's Superb. I also recommend the Temeraire series by Naomi Novick

I'd recommend anything in the Bolos series - awesome battle sequences, and lots of character development. It's very interesting seeing how the relationships of the human crew and the Bolos AIs evolve. If you like happy endings, however, you should look elsewhere. Every story from this series I've read so far have ended with martyrs...
Crusade, by David Weber and Steve White. The Rising, by James Doohan (god speed)
I'm with Visba on this one - #1 best read in the universe (at the beginning or end of time) is the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. You havn't lived or laughed until you've read that book. Red Dwarf comes in at a close second.

Is Temeraire really sci-fi? I would've said fantasy, myself. But if Temeraire passes, I'm going to say anything by Robin Hobb, or Alien Earth by Megan Lindholm.
City, by Clifford D. Simak, is amazing. A little difficult to get into, maybe. But definitely worth it.

i would recommend something by Douglas adams for a good laugh and The Doctor Who series for some action, both are great reads and can both be found at discount book stores, but if you want something really good, i would Buy the Ringworld series.

Douglas Adams is awesome. Isn't Ringworld what Halo was sort-of based on?

I highly recommend The Worthing Saga by Orson Scott Card. I liked Ender's game, but I liked this better.
Eon by Greg Bear is a little weird for some people, but I liked it.
