I understand the need to demonise communism in the Cold War, propaganda can indeed be necessary. I'm not saying I agree with it in that case, mind you. But why is it, almost 30 years after the Cold War, Americans have such an opposition to anything "commie" and that anything labeled communist ends up going down in flames, even if it isn't or even if it happens to be a good idea?
Do people in the US even know what real communism is and that socialism, the less extreme version, works out quite well for many countries? Just because it failed in the Soviet Union doesn't mean it can't work (not saying I support it either). I also dislike the false assumption that communism is in opposition to democracy.
I'm also quite disturbed that after watching Sicko I felt almost as if the US is moving to fascism instead of capitalism, at least in regards to health care, where the corporations have nearly free-reign over medical treatment and who's covered when to me it is a basic need and necessities in my mind should be protected by your government. Things such as food, shelter, and access to health care, education and a place of work.
Why is it that so many Americans have a problem with government run policies not set in place already, like the police and fire-department? Can you imagine if the police worked for the highest bidder? If you had to hope that the fire-department you happened to be paying was the one who was called to put out the fire? Other things like education and health care deserve to be looked out for by the government as well, it just makes sense to me.
