Ok, so it's my first NaNo, and I was all pysched and had planned a little bit of my story out. It was to be a One Piece Fanfiction. I had everything I needed, outline, character bios, webs, and I was feeling great and confident that I could finish out the month with 50,000 words easily.
Until this morning.
I went to church with my family and was sitting and listening to the pastor talk about being thankful for what we have, and the like. He described a friend who was a missionary in another country and could get a full 5-course meal for just a dollar, because the country was so poor. Then it hit me.
The main character is either a published or a soon to be published author, who decides to donate some of her royalties to one of those 'adopt a kid in a 3rd world country for just a dollar a day' programs. She begins sending money, and writing letters to her new child. Since she is a writer, she sends little short stories in her letters, just for the child. The two stay in contact for over a year. When her newest book gets published, she immediately sends the child a copy.
But the book is returned to her own mailbox. And the child is no where to be found.
In a course of events that haven't even begun to show themselves to me, the author goes to the country in search of her child. I'm not sure yet what exactly happens, but the main character must face difficult obsticles and learn to see the world in a brand new light before she can find her adopted child. The first half of the book is mainly the letters that the two send back and forth, and then the other half is the actual journey.
And it's less than 4 days from NaNo. gonk
What should I do? Should I stick with the story that I had planned, to make sure I can get 50,000 words? Or should I go out on a limb with the spirit of NaNo and do this new idea for more of a challenge? Has this ever happened to you?
