I've taken several Bible study classes and an Introduction to Judaism class. Mostly to try and understand religion but also to pick out the inconsistencies so that when people try and tell me that my lifestyle is 'against God's ways' I could use their own book against them... then one night, solid gold came on my tv and I've never forgotten.
I love the West Wing. (I would embed the player if I could figure out how. xD) Anyhow... click and watch! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S1-ip47WYWc

frosty_lynn *claps wildly at the speech* know i know why my rents don't watch the west wing. oh heres one you can use on on Muslims(they categorize homo/bisexuals as infidels). they believe that Jesus was not God but somehow had the power(granted from God) to make another man look like him and that man died on the cross. then after having essentially murdered a man later on ascended into heaven I thought they categorized anyone outside their religion as infidels whether their homosexual/bisexual/strait. Jews, Catholics. Blonds and Redheads. Similarly to nazis

Aye, I think koji is right about that. We're all infidels, they could really care less who we want to bed with. We're not Muslim.

Exactly, they terrorize their own people within their own religion i doubt they have bigger worries then a revolt from their own people.

Oddly enough, they are following their book to the letter when they torture each other. The Old Testament of the Bible has a lot of 'smiting' going on. Really only the New Testament tells people to love each other. Old Testament = everything is punishable by eternal damnation. New Testament = love and forgiveness.

I wish our president was even half as smart and articulate as the one on the West Wing. surprised
People distort words and events enough by the time they make it onto the evening news; imagine how much is lost, added, misinterpreted, or rendered completely obsolete when people try to live out of a religious text that's thousands of years old. Where there is uncertainty, there are idiots who will try to twist it any way they can to make their cause seem just. sweatdrop The Old Testament was borrowed from the Jews. Even the most devout Jews I know don't take everything in it literally, so it's rather odd that fundamentalist Christians would read so deeply into the same text. surprised
Fundamentalist Islam is equally dependent on a strict reading of religious texts that reflected ideas and attitudes that made sense a millennium or two ago. The vast majority of Muslims are tolerant, decent people who have no interest in hurting or converting people. But if you live in the middle of nowhere and the only Muslims you ever hear about are bin Laden and Ahmedinejad, then it's no wonder Americans are so afraid of Islam in general. sweatdrop

Aye, well, we were pretty much only talking about the fundamentalists. Because in every religion there are extremists which are scary and liberal members which make good neighbors. I mean, even look at the Mormons. Granted, the main stream Mormon church does not associate with the extremists, the extremists consider themselves 'true Latter Day Saints'. They live in communes and marry their underage daughters off to their neighbors and friends in the commune so that every man can have 15 wives. Whereas the vast majority of Mormons are perfectly normal nice people that don't practice polygamy. xD
And I fear the extreme right wing Christians more than any Muslim. That could have something to do with the fact that I deal with the Christians on a far more regular basis and thanks to them the civil rights of millions of Americans continues to be in jeopardy. Apparently church and state can't seem to be kept separate. Someday someone will explain to me how separation of church and state allows for a religious based ceremony - marriage confers federal benefits amongst those that go through it. The marital benefits are, of course, currently being challenged by, 'domestic partnerships' but even those don't give as much power to the partner. This 'separate but equal' crap holds about as much water as it did when they didn't allow people of color to attend the same schools. We're being given the short end of the stick because a bunch of middle class white people in the Bible belt think we should be strung up and burned at the stake.
**if you hadn't noticed, pangolin is passionate about this subject. ninja I think it is a civil rights issue more than a religious one.

I'm still waiting for people to realize that religion should have no affect on governmental issues. Yeah, hey, bible is some good stuff sometimes. Like 'do no kill' 'do not steal', which people do anyways, but no matter how bad it is, the governments kill more people through wars then any single handed person can do to anyone. So how are they fallowing the bible there? And if they choose not to fallow it, don't fallow all the other stuff it says too. Seriosuly what idiot of a God said "Heh.. Gay people are 'immoral'" Seriously what the hell? Thats like saying "Lets have lactose intolerant people drink milk.. heh heh... moo."

I'm 'fundamentally' against war as I don't think it really fixes anything. I'll support my troops but I don't support the president sending them into danger. I don't think it makes any difference at this point if we stay in or pull out. The only major difference is how many more Americans die over there.

War itself is pointless. Lives to waist. The meaning behind wars mean everything. We fight in iraq for Iraqi freedom. We fought WWII to help European Jews from dieing. We fought the Civil War for freedom of slaves. War is of hatred and death. Intent is of liberation.
