I think we should save the planet for the right reasons, not because we are scared into it. I almost take offense to the fact that I, as an individual, tried to be environmentally friendly. This was before the global warming scare really surfaced.
Now, all of the sudden, some people pop out of the clear blue and say the earth is important. You know what I think about those people? I think that they just care about their own lives because they didn't care till their lives were threatened.
Just my opinion.

as someone recently pointed out to me, we cannot save, the planet, only save ourselves
and personally, i could care less whether people try to 'save the planet' for the right reasons or not, i mean, as long as they are doing it....

I dislike the rhetoric of fear as well, which is one thing inspiring my career direction at the moment. There are plenty of other good reasons for doing it, but the science isn't made well known to the public. From a psychological standpoint, our relationship with Gaia could be characterized as downright psychotic. We should no sooner hestitate to correct someone with a serious mental illness like schitzophrenia than the collective illness that somehow rationalizes abusive treatment of everything nonhuman.
It isn't really this simple though. We're basically following the same Natural laws as any other species. Problem is, our technology is making the costs signifigantly higher than it should be.
