I'm not good at introducing threads, so I'm going to cut to the chase: What words do you commonly use while writing? Do your characters constantly "frown", "smile", "sigh", or "laugh"? Is all time measured in "moment"s? Or do your female characters constantly "chide" themselves?
Conversely, what are some words you know you don't use very often in your writing? You might want to try using the ctrl+F function in MS Word to find out just how many times a single word surfaces in your story. You might be surprised.
Personally, out of 169 pages of MOSI:
"moment" occurs 190 times
"seem" occurs 109 times
"frown" occurs 32 times
"smile" occurs 110 times
"laugh" occurs 55 times
"giggle" occurs 8 times
"snicker" occurs 4 times
"sigh" occurs 58 times
"blood" occurs 36 times
"pain" occurs 34 times
"okay" occurs 1 time
"guy" occurs 0 times
And for a ratio of how often character names are mentioned:
Vitae: 1024 times (roughly six times per page)
Jericho: 659 times (roughly four times per page)
Sabine: 626 times (roughly 3.7 times per page)
Yinda: 607 times (roughly 3.5 times per page)
Nathan: 374 times (roughly twice per page)
Leste: 191 (roughly once per page)
So? Got time to kill? Try it!
