So, I've heard of mythical surgeons who do top surgery without requiring letters from psychologists/psychiatrists. Do you guys happen to know who they are?
I'm getting more and more frustrated with the entire process of therapy, especially the way the counseling center at my university has treated me. While I've explicitly stated the first session I had that my goal was to work toward receiving that golden key letter, they have done nothing but put obstacles in my way of transitioning. I do not believe they have my best interest in mind, only covering their own asses and reputations. I'm so sick of politics, especially of psychologists with their own egos stuck in politics, that I'm ready to attempt to get around them.
Plus, my own personal philosophies are at odds with the idea of "the letter." This idea that we have to be evaluated, and then validated by some outside entity who decides who is "ready" and who is "not" to transition? I'm pretty much at odds with most mental health models, and although I've tried to work within the restraints of the guidelines laid down for me, I seem to be continually punished through being told that I'm not ready, I haven't done enough, I'm not working hard enough, I'm not stable enough yet, etc. I'm seriously done and I could go on about this for a while, but don't want to sound too anti-establishment just yet.
So, surgeons who will do top surgery without letters? Does anyone have any friends who have done this? Or gone to get top surgery in an unconventional way? I've heard stories of Brownstein operating on some genderqueer identified people who didn't have the GID diagnosis and no letters from psychs. But otherwise, I don't have much information on this or how to go about it.

You could try calling some and asking them if they would consider it, and explain that you've been in therapy but they haven't written the letter yet for some reason.
Or you could talk to your therapist (or perhaps a new one, a specialist even) and explain how you're feeling and ask what's going on with not getting it yet. The way I got mine was that I said it might be handy to have a professional letter to show my parents and I got it before I realized it was *the* letter, so by going about it in a round-about way might work too...

[I'm not sure if you still need this inf or not considering you got your first shot of T, and that might mean you have a letter now.
But McLean in Toronto... I know because I was looking into him. No letter required, but consultation is required. I would like to get a consultation when I can.]

Toronto, there, about this!
My doctor just told me today that the best surgeons in Canada for me, are in Toronto. So basically, I'll be going there soon. I'll raise money first, then go - but that will probably be next year. I have no money, I'm not 18 yet, and I have no way of leaving Montreal by myself...
But I suggest Toronto if you live in Canada.
My doctor told me he'd just have to refer me and they'd take me.

[Yes? I'm feeling crazy and in only my underwear tonight thus adding to the atmosphere...huzzah... and I'm thinkin'... if I'm going to go to Canada over spring break... and if flights from PA to NS always seem to stop over in Toronto...

It's most likely compleatly ilegal, exspencive, and you can't be too sure about the result. My bet would be that you have to know someone that knows of the surgon to find one. I'd jump the chance myself if I know of any tho', there's bound to be someone in the states, and I'm pretty sure there are tons in Tailand. Sadly the travel is damn exspencive.
Just make sure you remember that if you do it unlisenced, you have a 50-50 chance for things to work out fine or get infected, and about 30% chance for your nipples to end up in a straight line. : P
You could be lucky, just make sure you really want it bad enough to risk it.
