Fushigi Yūgi tells the story of four ordinary teenager girls,Takiko, Suzuno, Miaka and Yui, who are pulled into "The Universe of the Four Gods", a mysterious book (which Takiko Okuda's father translated to recover the loss of his wife, Ensuke, who had died in the first manga book) Within the book, they find themselves in ancient China. Fulfilling ancient prophecies, the four are chosen to be the priestesses of Byakko, Genbu, Suzaku and Seiryū, respectively, the four Guardian Gods worshiped in the book's world. Along the way, the four girls are joined by their seven celestial warriors, and find themselves learning the true meaning of love, friendship, and sacrifice.
