1336, New Calendar

The human population has escalated to 11 billion. Despite the increasing frequency and destructive power of natural disasters in the not too distant past and the excessive casualties from a recent world war the population has continued to rise. In order to accommodate for the gargantuan population, a unified Earth government proposed space colonization, starting with the moon. In recent centuries they have begun to build giant cylindrical habitats for the ever increasing population. This setup provided a mutually beneficial relationship between the Earth and space colonies. The space colonies would excavate raw materials from nearby asteroids to trade for vital necessities from the Earth. However in recent times there have been numerous immigrations, legal or otherwise, to Earth from space. This provoked the rise of xenophobic anxieties in Earthlings and the united Earth government ruled that there was to be no permanent migration of colony citizens to Earth. Outraged, the colonies opted for negotiations. The results heavily favored the Earth government which established a small quota for immigration in return for marginally reduced rates on raw materials from space. The colonies agreed to these conditions because the Earth threatened to close several trade channels, crippling the welfare of most of the colonies.

Around this time Chrome Industries unveiled their revolutionary new invention: the mobile suit, an 18 meter tall robotic, humanoid machine that has more mobility than a fighter plane and more endurance than a tank. Interested in this new marvel, the Earth Union Group commissioned Chrome Industries to construct a line of battle ready mobile suits. During the construction process, Chrome Industries was bought by a space-excavation company known as Gundam Corp and subsequently renamed as Gundam Corp. Under new management, Gundam Corp sped up mobile suit development at a rapid pace.

With a rapidly growing earth mobile suit armada and increasing friction between the colonial government and Earth Union Group, it would take only the slightest excuse to ignite the largest war ever seen in human history. The spark that would ignite that fire appeared on September 12, 1336, when a colony fell on New York city, devastating a substantial amount of the North American east coast and causing widespread economic instability and turmoil. Both the Earth and space colonies blamed the other for the colony’s fall and it soon erupted into armed conflict, engulfing all of Earth and space. Knowing the Earth had the advantage of mobile suits, the colonies, now collectively known as Petra commissioned Nexus Enterprises to build them mobile suits to combat the Earth.

[Alexander.:Earth:.Maine]

"Don't work yourself too hard while we're gone Alex," His younger sister warned, her hand on her slender hips. From her stunning looks you wouldn't imagine she was one of the most talented members of the family. It was mostly her work that had helped them to develop the beam rifle prototype that would hopefully be perfected into a working model. "And don't let those corporate executives talk you into anything."

"We'll be back in a few days son," His father said, slipping into the hovering vehicle, a briefcase in tow his wife following close behind. Alex waved back silently before closing the door as the car quickly turned around, speeding down the road towards civilization.

It was a routine trip to one of their families major factories based on a colony. His family regularly made trips between the earth and colonies in order to complete transactions for raws materials and to supervise research and manufacturing. They owned most of the stock in a small robotics and engineering company they had founded several generations ago. Recently they had shifted to a focus on creating equipment for mobile suits as well as testing a few prototype models they had designed themselves. Despite the small size of their company the quality of their merchandise was difficult to compete with and they had quickly become recognized as one of the stronger firms in the field. For this reason several corporate representatives were scheduled to visit their home in rural Maine to discuss the possibility of selling the company.

"Not on their life," Alex said, sliding into a chair in front of a work desk. Several blueprints lay out in front of him. Most of them were useless ideas that had came to him in his sleep then slipped away as he tried to put them on paper. Images of mobile suit parts, armor, and weaponry litered the pieces of paper. The free space crammed with equations and measurements which had been almost completely smeared away from his hand running over and smoothing out the paper countless times.

He set to work on designing the shaft and trigger mechanism for the beam rifle. He wondered though if he should bother with a literal trigger at all. Why have the suit physically pull the trigger when the gun could be wired directly into the suits computer and fired from there? Then again though a trigger may ensure better flexibility between models. Before he knew it several hours had passed and the sound of the door bell ringing tore him from his work.

Tired from several hours of tedious calculations he shuffled through the hallway to the door as the bell was rung several times. He opened the door just as one of the suit wearing men was ringing the bell for the sixth time and in the most monotone of voices asked the two men to come in. A little over an hour passed as the Gundam Corp representatives blabbered on nonstop about the advantages of merging with their company before at last Alexander finally awoke from his daydreaming to realize that both men were still there. "I'm sorry to waste your time gentleman," though his voice lacked any sincerity, "but we have no intention of selling or merging with your prestigious firm."

Both men looked at each other in disappointment, before rising from their seats and walking towards the door. "We won't take up any more of your time then sir." One said, opening the door for his counterpart. As he stepped outside though he looked upwards. A loud rumbling sound filled the air, and for a moment Alexander thought it was simply a jet engine. But as he too stepped outside he saw it for what it really was. A gigantic fireball was descending from the sky, fiery debris falling in every direction. The faces of his parents sprung to his mind, but especially that of his sister, bright, hopeful, filled with so much potential. It flashed again and again in his mind until at last he awoke screaming in a cold sweat, throwing the tangled sheets from his body, his hand smashing the lamp next to his bed.

The news babbled on in the next room about the disaster. Something about stock prices plummeting and finger pointing as to who was responsible for what and why the black box which would have recorded the apparent malfunction had yet to be found.
