Ok, had another rant to myself I've decided to write here. I've noticed that people care way too much about what others think of them and forget that all that matter is if you're happy with yourself.
People spend so much time showin' off to others to try to prove to others that they're awesome people or have gone through a lot in their life or somethin' like that when really I think they're just tryin' to prove to themselves that what they feel is right by havin' in confirmed by someone else.
All I have to say is: who cares? Why can't people just be happy with themselves without needin' to tell others about it and have it confirmed. I know people like to share their thoughts and experiences and I have nothin' against that, but sometimes I can't help but feel that what some people say are just to kinda show off and make them feel better about themselves. I think people would be happier if they would already be happy with themselves and only talk for fun and exchangin' of experiences and such.

the thing is.. some people have to have that ego boost JUST to be happy.. and a lot of people care what others think just to "fit" in with the crowd persay..
This might be because well.. some people just LOVE the feeling of victory over someone else and feel proud about themselves.. or they have low self confidence and anything they can show off.. they will just to get teh nod of approval from a friend. or could just have the cocky additude too.. you never know..

It's sad though. It's so much easier when you're just happy with yourself. When you rely on others you can fall really far if you don't get what you want. I mean, you feel really good when things go right, but when things don't go right for a long time people can fall into a rut. When you're happy with yourself you're just...well...happy with yourself, so there's no ruts!

  Instinct.
Humans are social beings. Since we were wandering the world in groups and hunting whatever animals we could, we have cared about what others think.
But to the extent many people get is overboard. And for that I really blame all the s**t we're exposed to. A very large portion of TV shows, especially the popular ones, are all about people's interactions. Who likes who, worrying about what someone else will think, blah blah blah. So this is our example of how human interaction works.
But I still totally agree with you. Just sayin' it's not out of the blue or anything. And answering your rhetorical question xd ;
I gave up caring what other people thought in 9th grade. Sure, everyone thought I was really weird. Sure, there were rumours about me being a lesbian. Whatever. I was having fun consistently, for the first time.
The only thing I care about what other people think about me is if they dislike me, because if they do, I'd rather not impose myself upon them. But if they're neutral or better, then the rest doesn't matter.

We care what people think of us because it's important. If everyone thinks your a disease-ridden homicidal maniac, no one's gonna wanna be around you and they'll put you in a confined room in prison. If it didn't matter what people think of you, there'd be no point in a jury or a judge.
