"Prayer to a Soulless River"
Shimmering light on dappled inky waters
Calls to me more sweetly than the siren's song--
Beckoning me forward into deep recesses,
Swallowing me with dark, frigid wetness.
Glinting on the surface, yet midnight underneath,
It whispers temptingly to me,
And now I'm falling all over again,
Breaking the ripples' rhythm--
Oh well--
The current's there to sweep me away.
Invading my throat with icy fingers--
Begging without words,
But not for breath to say them:
Carry me off, my shining, soulless river,
Steal from me my life so I become you.
Drown all my desires and reasons alike--
Dilute my substance with yours
Until I am no more.
