The article by Mike Tokito, for The Oregonian is much better then the article by Cliff Kerpatrick for the Gazette-Times.
The reason is twofold, formation and style. Cliff’s article was to formal, to analyses like. It lacked heart, a sense of warmth that I wanted from the article. It was to fact oriented, and the way he used some of the quotes I just didn’t like.
Much of my dislike is purely based on a preference for style, I liked how mike used his quotes, I liked how he paced his article. I liked how he used the quote about pie at the end of the article, because it made a nice ending. If only for the simple fact that once you win you win, you want your dessert, and pie is the best dessert. Moreover, dessert is an evening thing it is something good for finality, Chris just tosses it in at the beginning, to me that shows a careless view of pacing.
The article’s substance begins at dessert? Hogwash!
The article was much better when it began with a nervous tradition like what Mike did, when he mentions the Obama game of basketball at the front of the story, it gives a sense that even from the outset there was a bit of apprehension, and then it goes on to describe the night.
Chris’s story is just too matter of fact for my taste, he ate pie, he did this, he did that. I don’t care. I spent roughly two years watching polls and reading news about the race for no less then 4 hours a day. I understand Obama does things, I want to see the human aspect of Obama in a day, and I want to see it through the eyes of Craig Robinson. In my opinion, I got that human aspect from Mike’s article, and not Chris’
