Alright, I know Tsu and I were gonna leave it up to you guys to start, but I figured we could at least get some topics out there.

Because today I am finals brain-dead, I will start with a pretty typical topic.

Ghosts.

Believe in them? No? If you do believe, what do you think they are? If not, why and what about all the sightings for hundreds of years?

Sorry if that's a rather bland topic to start with, but if it's boring, make your own! Talk about something interesting!

Phooey. I was gonna make the first topic... make a horrible pun involving rolling balls, too. Just as soon as I thought of something.

Anyway... ghosts? Well, there's always the cliched 'unfinished business" schtick you could say they have... But Iuno. Ghosts are probably just curious spirits... who can't move on - for whatever reason, maybe they got lost... or lost their key to the pearly gates - or they don't want to move on. I can imagine that once you die, you would quickly come to be jealous of those who yet live. And just like Narcissus got lost in his own reflection, a newly-dead spirit would get lost in watching people live on. So they stick around.

Oops. Sorry Nii-kun didn't mean to ruin your party! You can go ahead and make the thread...

That would make sense, just getting caught up in the things of the world. Although I have also heard the theory that they aren't really spirits at all, but imprints of energy left on the timeline caused by a strong emotion or event.

Charles de Lint also brings up two ghost theories I found interesting, at least. One is that time (past, present, future) are not really apart from one another, they are all going on at the same time but separated by a 'gauze'. Some people can see a little past the gauze ahead (psychics, foretellers) and sometimes the gauze gets a little worn down in some places where the past touches the present (ghosts).

The other is a little less relevant, but he wrote a story that brings up the idea that you may not really have to be dead for a ghost of you to be walking around. If a part of yourself dies, sometimes those old 'yous' can cause their own hauntings. Not sure if that's possible but the story always intrigued me.

Ack...I knew I forgot something..*did the poll and then got distracted so no posty for Tsu*

I certainly do believe in ghost, though I can't say for sure what they are. They could simply be residual energy left behind by an even or something else like that or they could be a spirit left behind. Heck, it could even be a combination of the two. (Say a tragic death or murder = strong residual energy.)

Nick, what you said would make a lot of sense though. At the same time, though, they might simply get a little...um...pleased with their newly found form. I mean, they might simply hang around because they get a kick out of scaring the living daylights out of people. Or there could even be a strong desire to stay with a particular person or object that they feel particularly protective/fond of. (I mean, really, you wouldn't want someone pawning off all your family heirlooms or shoving someone close to you down the stairs for kicks, would you?)

And those theories, Ro...are interesting. I hadn't really heard of those before. The 'gauze' theory though, is quite curious. Not as curious as the absurd family tree, but curious. So, it's pretty much the parallel time-stream thing, hm? Like, where everything you do changes a certain event ever so slightly...but a time frame where you took a different choice is going on too? (Cue the So Weird show sequence...loved that show...miss it lots.) This one also brings up how some people could throw in passed lives and whatnot too, I think.

I like the latter theory for some reason. Relevant or not, it's still intriguing. I mean it would make a little bit of sense to think that. There are times when it does feel like a certain part of you dies, so to speak. I mean, say there's a part of you that likes to yell at people or something else that dredges up strong emotions... If you completely discard that part of or someone makes it go away somehow, then you're basically tossing off a huge chunk of energy out the window and off into...where ever you happen to be.

Eh, who knows? It could very well be all of these things without us knowing or something like that.....
