Okay, I don't know about the rest of you, but a lot of older people I know say: "Video games rot your brain." "They make you think more violently." "They're a bad influence." "They're a waste of time and money." "They're the reason kids these days are causing so much trouble."

Now then, I say to you, what do you think? I did a research paper over the history of games as a summer assignment. It was really pretty satisfying, coming from a gamer's point of view, to provide evidence that they are none of the above. I actually found a good deal of stuff linking to games being a GOOD thing. My English teacher was really quite happy that I was one of the first people to actually try to prove the stereotype wrong and say that games aren't as bad as people think.

I'm not going to bore you with the trivial details of my short paper, it was really a pretty nice read....considering it was a research paper. <.< If you really want to read it, go to my gaia journal. If it doesn't let you access it, then I'll PM it to you if you want. (Why anyone wants to read it is beyond me...I'm not quite sure why I want to read it...)

Anyway, on to my questions. What do you think? Are games a bad influence? Do they really promote and help spread violent behavior? Is this a load of propaganda against the gaming industry? Should games be banned from shelves? (Or simply certain games?)

(disclaimer: Okay...I will admit, there are some game that I deem to be a bad influence...heck there are parts in just about any game that are well...violent or drug related....and really, that's not something I promote....but that's not to say the games are inherently bad.)
^---Haha! Fine print!

Too much of anything can be a bad thing. People have DIED from playing video games for too long -- but those are extremely rare and few cases.

I do believe games of certain genre can... desensitize us to... certain things. Things like violence, crime, and drug abuse. On the other hand, we all get a healthy dose of these things in movies, media, and even the people around us.

It all comes down to moderation. Too many video games can lead to social problems and possibly behavior problems, but on the other hand, I'm certain they have benefits, too.

There are good things...you learn morals from some of them (very few some) and you gain access to a fun culture of people who happen to be some of the most awesome? Duh....gamers rock....<.< Don't care what anyone else says...

I think it depends on the game.
Most I don't think are a bad influence at all. Especially ones with puzzles and stuff for you to figure out. If anything, it makes you exercise your brain.

Stuff like Grand Theft Auto though.... eh... I don't even see the point in that

*nods* Some of them (okay, a lot of the ones that I play) have balancing puzzles and interesting minigames that make you really think. So they do some good, I think. I agree with some of the games though. I can't find a point behind them, but I do take join in some of those very games...on a rare occasion.

Also, I just thought but Nudge (Lovely Lady) made another point about "desensitizing". I think that's true too though. I don't think that period war games are such a great thing either. If there's a racial bias that someone has, it only gets reenforced through the game. -_- And also, I just don't like the idea of a lot of war games in general. That's probably just my prefernce though. ^^;
