The series makes its debut into the world of 3-D graphics and the Nintendo Gamecube with the ninth installment, Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance. The game is set on the continent of Tellius and features Ike, the first main character of common birth, as he joins his father's company, the Greil Mercenaries. Not long after he becomes a full member do they receive word that the country of Daein has invaded Crimea. Greil decides to send a scouting party to see the damage done to the capital before they make any decisions. Along the road however, they are spotted by Daein soldiers and attacked. After defeating the Daein force, Ike and the company find Princess Elincia in the woods. She hires them to escort her to Gallia, a Laguz nation. Daein pursues them at every turn, but they make it to Gallia. While staying at an old castle near the border, Ike sees his father leaving the castle and follows, only to witness Greil's death at the sword of the Black Knight, a general of Daein. Ike assumes command of the Mercenaries and escorts Elincia to Begnion, where they find the Apostle and Empress. They decide to take back Crimea, with Ike as General of the army. Finally Elincia revives Crimea and Ike defeats Daein.
