Alright, my OC is an Aztec priest. My issue here is that they have long, messy, soot covered, blood-stained hair.
It is possible for me to do this to my hair (even though my hair is not that long anymore) but ... will it ever be the same again? I'm afraid that I should just give up and find a wig to torture.
What do you think?

You could go either way. If you want to cosplay more than one character in a day, or if you want to be able to quickly change, go with a wig. But if you do want to use your own hair it shouldn't damage it. Go with hair-safe products that give you the look you want. And then messy your hair but holding out the ends in one and, and in the other brushing up towards your scalp.
