I have loved this book series for the last six years. The series is not purely steampunk, but it is anachronistic. It's set in a sort of alternate reality or period of history. The characters' clothing, the buildings, and some of the vehicles are very old-fashioned and steampunk. Then there are parts of the story when rubber soled tennis shoes and computers are also mentioned. The series is very eerie, and despite the supposed 8th grade reading level, the humor and illustrations are definitely appealing to an older crowd as well. There is a movie adaptation as well as a video game that were created, and they both are anachronistic like the book series. I'm sure most of the people in this gild have heard of this series, but I recommend reading the books. I also recommend the tie-n books like The Beatrice Letters and The Unauthorized Autobiography of Lemony Snicket.
On a side note, the author of the books is in a two-person band called The Gothic Archies. The music has a lot of accordion and violin and sounds like it's being recorded in a bank vault much of the time. It has a sort of steampunk feel as well, especially since the band's music is a soundtrack for the audio books.
