Yesterday was our first trip to the emergency room. Alex had a fever. The first temp I took was under the arm and came up at 101.2, next right after in the ear was 99.9. So I called the doctors office and they said they would call us back. We gave Alex some Tylenol. He was very clingy so Matt held him and I took his temp again. 102.9 in the ear so off to the ER we went.
The nurse gave him some Motrin and we waited to see if it was strep. Alex thought the bed was fun and babbled and laughed the whole time except when a doctor or nurse would come in. They told us that we needed to stop holding him because it was keeping him warm and not letting the fever break. He doesn't have strep; it's just a virus.
It broke and we bought some Motrin on the way home.
But it made me think that maybe we wouldn't have had to go if we had stopped holding him. It would have been hard to do since he wanted to be held but I learned that the next time he feels hot to give him some Motrin and set him down.
