I remember when I first came to Gaia, it was the most amazing message board I had ever seen. The site was small at the time and it seems liked you could always find someone you knew at all times. As time passed It grew and grew and around 2005, I was spending all time helping out the Mods and New Users in Welcome to Gaia.

This worked well, until about 2006, Gaia decided they no longer needed our help in the thread and moved our topic, which was sticked, to a sub folder. After this it seems Gaia cared less and less about it's userbase and I slowly slipped into obscurity before I stopped coming to the site in 2007.

Now as I return, I find the site has become just like any other popular website on the internet, it's a corporate based site, which is disconnected from it's user base and exists to make profit over a strong community.

So, feel free to share your stories and tales about your experience with Gaia.

Hello, Hobocore. Welcome back to Gaia, and to the guild. =)

I do agree with you that it exists to make profit and appears to be disconnected from its users. I've only been here since Sep '08, but it's fairly obvious. I think the users having the worst time with all the change are the younger ones who have "grown up" here along with Gaia. The "familiar" is missing.

According to my Gaia age, I'm mid 06-07 (<3 years). Still, its kinda sad that I now feel more at home on some IMAGEBOARDS than say, towns (shudder), rally (new, ack ack) or even the "mass" forums (bleh).

I think my low was mid-09, when I actually went to have a look at the cash offers. My jaw literally dropped (which is quite rare)...I mean, some of the ads were very grey, and others downright non-worksafe (so we're a O-13 site, but still?) Then there was a brief but very intense "eew" period till end-09, when the tobacco crisis kicked in.

Since then, there's been slightly more fresh air than usual (IMO). I mean, they actually backtracked on the tobacco, then started quietly pushing out EIs that people complained were stagnant. That, and zOMG actually becomes more solo-friendly (though again, some stumbling there, see Koichi's (successful I think?) petition), and now Skittles is seemingly gone (at least temporarily, which is already good considering how its been around for at least a year).

Of course, you can still point to the new CS items and EIs and the Kiki cash car which are still stinking up the place, but hey, web programmers and graphic artists gotta eat too.

I'm a 04 member, but had a break for a year somehwere from 05 - 06. I can never remember...

It's true, that Gaia was more about it's users back then, but when thinking back, there were not as many as today. They still try to help newbies, which is why they are now giving them some clothes, a little gold, and a guide to go through. And I also think the devs and moderators are easier to get in contact with, when writing in forums such as feedback and bug reports.

That they made up cash doesn't bug me at all, and it never has. There's nothing wrong with making some items more exclusive than others, and they have to pay their developers somehow, and I honestly don't think the MC's are giving enough to do that. Making the fish cost cash only though, and also starting to take over the cars is too much. In all other shops, you can choose whether you'd like to pay with cash or gold, and I think many people would still choose cash, if a fish was to cost around 150k, but we'd have the choise. The million gold shop is a joke though, like 7 million gold for a dress with only 1 pose. Ha... ha... ha...?

As for the forums; yes, they suck big time. But I don't think the moderators can do any better than they do right now. I've reported more posts and topics the past few days as I normally do, and they were removed really really fast. Also, there are plenty of guilds these days, enough to ignore the forums completely. The only subforum I visit every day is the arena subforum, but the arenas are being taken over by cheating guild noobs, thus maybe someone will even make a guild for that *shrug*
