I agree with you and I love how you talked about her always being strong and never really letting anything hit her as hard as that did. I didn't completely catch that, I was really upset, so I don't think I was quite catching everything...
P.S. You might put a spoiler warning in the topic title, I had Dog's death ruined for me, and it wasn't fun.

This is why I love Garth Nix and his stories, the man is a wonderful writer in how he makes the characters real. Some books you find that the main characters are your typical cocky Mary sue -a Mary sue is a perfect character with no flaws-
But in Nix's books all the characters have a spark...and he lets us get to know each character so we feel for them.
The first time I read that scene was when I was in math and I cried out "No!" and started to cry like a baby. >.<
Everyone stared at me like i was insane but I had to be excused from my class to calm down.
I tend to get quite attached to book characters.
