Yay I'm so excited!
One of the psychology professors at my school teaches human sexuality and every semester she invites students from the GLBT community to come speak to her class about our lives. Basically she wants us to "educate" straight people about how we're all human.
Today is the day I will once again sit in front of 60+ people and let them ask me?’s about being bisexual. I can't wait. I always have fun at these things.
Has anyone else every done something like this?

i have i am the co president of the GSA at my high school and me and a couple of other kids went to the middle school to educate them on how gays and lesbian and transgenders and bisexuals are no different than anyone else we just choose to love differently than what society calls normal. We are also planning to participate in the day of silence on April 16th we made a commercial that will show through school to advertise it as well as educate the children on certain words that others find offensive like fagot (our Principal said it was OK to use the word on the school tvs this once)

Wow you guys are amazing! It makes me happy to know that there are others out there who are taking charge and will not submit to the ignorance of the society around them.

I have.
Except it was a panel for the movie "For the Bible Tells Me So". I was initially asked to talk about my experiences with religion and sex/gender politics but it quickly turned into a coming out story with religion eek
It was a month and a week ago and I came out to a room full of ppl about being transgendered AND a Christian. I came out again to my mom after...I just about fainted from all the excitement of the day--it was totally unprecedented. @__@
I would still have ppl come up to me days later and thank me for what I said in the panel, ppl whom I didn't even know where telling me how inspiring I was and how much I rocked for what I said. It leaves one with a greater sense of purpose within the greater community and I was so glad I was able to do that panel b/c it affected so many individuals (even some of my fellow panel members, lol).
Relish the opportunity to educate and to be an ambassador for our community.
Way to go Neko for making waves at your school too mrgreen

My previous university had a small club called S-GLO, very few members. But, when we did things...the school body/other students were very supportive. I guess the club was fairly new though when I joined and when I left it went under new management and was growing. It made me happy...and sad that I didn't get to see how well it did.
We did meet speakers from the community and with other schools and had neat little activities. Just hope it keeps growing and getting more supporters. School is one of the best ways of educating the people around us. I wish more high schools would have Sociology as a required class or something too.

Its really fun to do stuff like that. My history class was talking about public policy papers and Im doing mine on same sex marriage and why it should be legal. The class wound up turning into a Q & A about how lesbians are still people and deserve the same rights and just because someones bisexual doesnt mean they just want attention. I even had to explain that its not something you can really choose or change its something your born with. It was really cool to see the wheels turning in their heads its like they never really understood it before. biggrin

It's so great to see the younger generation getting involved in LBGT issues. Back in my high school days if I came out as being Transgendered not only would the entire school have beat the snot out of me.I'd have prolly been locked up tight as being an undesirable. You kids have done so much more then you think to open eyes. Keep up the good work and one day we can all be who we are w/out any fears.

I've had opportunities, but I'm to chicken. I've had some really bad experiences. I want people to see the person I am, and not the role that was forced onto me by family, church, and people I had to work with/for. I want to be seen for the woman that I am, and not as someone who used to be seen as a guy, so I just don't go out of my way to tell people about myself unless its a fairly intimate setting like just a few people talking openly about the subject. sweatdrop

I've done stuff like that a few times, more than a few actually since I was the token Transperson for the entire college. More often than not it was up to me to represent Trans issues where ever we had a stake in something, even in the campus LGBT group. I had fun with the presentations though, some of which was watching some people squirm when surgery or bathrooms were brought up twisted .

I think educating people is the only way we'll ever be able to change things. People have been taught to hate/fear those who are different. They were brought up to believe that something is "wrong" so it’s not ok. By showing people that we are no different from them, they will come to learn that there is not "wrong" with us and we are good (if not better) human beings just like the rest of society.
