First off it helps if you can have someone go with you, but the major issue you are going to have to deal with is what to wear post surgery. Irregardless to which way you are going, you are going to need loos fitting, soft clothing. Loos fitting pants, such as what you might wear to workout in, pajama bottoms, and casual skirts for those of us who are MTF.
I got my surgery on the 9th of March, MTF, and had a cute pair of hello kitty lounge wear pants, a couple plush velvety pants, and some skirts to wear.
The second challenge for me has been the maxi pads. You are going to be fairly uncomfortable in the first place, don't make it worse with ill fitting pads. I'm presently using 'Always Infinity' at night, as they are narrower in the back. Also make sure you have cotton undies. They breath better, and will in turn be more comfortable. The hospital started me with maternity pads, and I'm down to a thin pad now, but can't wait to heal up enough so that I don't really need them anymore. I'm actually using thong sized pads during the day now. As the space between my legs isn't all that great, I was having chafing problems where the edges of the pads were rubbing.
To help you heal up faster, I recommend lots of antioxidants before, and after surgery. I also recommend drinking Chamomile tea. Double up the bags or you won't be getting enough of the essential oils, and nutrients. Also, don't forget to buy yourself an inflatable doughnut to sit on.
I also use a cane; which came in really handy in keeping myself vertical when walking or just navigating rough terrain. It also comes in handy getting in, and out of vehicles. If you are flying, get a break apart cane that's designed for travel.
