Laws and procedures depend on what state you are in. Generally it is a lengthy process that includes background checks on both you, your husband, relatives, and sometimes even family friends. They do a series of interviews to determine your 'character' and they interview many people. They also check to see if you are financially secure and are able to support another child. You also have to go through either the adoption agency or the child's parents. Just the initial interviews and background checks can take from 6 months to 6 years.
My husband and I wanted to adopt my little brother who has been living with us since last December however both the time and the money required wasn't worth it since he turned 18 last month.
It will cost a lot of money.
