Chapter One: Mercury
If not for her mother's unavoidable rebuke, Maewen would have sworn it had been getting colder. Instead, the 16 year old girl merely observed the dropping temperature, year after year. It had always been like that, so Maewen was used to it. That didn't mean she liked it though. Even though the present was as bleak as the bountiful snow clouds over head, the future of a healer raised in Suimilitara, or just Imil as the locals called it, has historically been a successful one out in the world.
Imil didn't need healers itself. The Mercury Lighthouse's Fountain of Hermes cured any illness and healed any wound short of bringing back the dead. But Mercury Adepts who were born, raised and trained in Imil, in proximity of the mighty old Lighthouse, were world renown for being some of the best healers.
Maewen's childhood dream of being a princess guarded by her shining knight died long ago, upon the realization that she wasn't and likely never would be a princess, but for an Suimilitaran healer, living in a castle in Gaallo or Fliit, or even Berun was far from impossible.
Still, getting there involved surviving here, in the cold, chilly, freezing and getting-colder-all-the-time north.
Maewen shivered involuntarily, just thinking about it, a motion that whipped her back to reality, just in time to duck out of the path of a hefty brass pipe swinging her way head-level. The Steam Technician carrying the pipe blinked in surprise and grunted an apology that might have been discernible if not for the thick fur lined collar that protected his neck and mouth from the cold. His dark, well tanned skin contrasted harshly with the white, snow-laden landscape. It hadn't been the first time that week Maewen had had a close encounter with a less than friendly pipe.
The Imil town council recently scrapped together enough money to hire a steam company from Gaallo to install steam piping in the town and for all the inhabitants who pitched in. Maewen's mother was not one such beneficiary. That meant, no steam heating to look forward to. No steam gadgets or other modern conveniences to make living in Weyward's icebox more bearable. All the more reason to get out...
Maewen bowed around several other Steam Technicians before finally reaching her destination: the town hall. She scowled unhappily at the lacquered finish on the hall's double doors before smoothing her face and actually wrestling the heavy insulated panels open and slipping inside.
Her mother had volunteered Maewen to help with the pipe testing in the town hall, the first building to have completed Steam pipe installation. The technicians needed a water adept to help control and monitor the steam for the initial tests. In other countries, a water adept might even supply the water for the steam, but with snow on the ground almost year around, water was not hard to come by in Imil; Consequently the pipe testing procedure was simple enough that even a trainee like Maewen would suffice for the job.
Inside the hall, the stone walls and floors had been carved up by earth adepts to make way for the pipes to run. The pipes ran in concentric circles around the circular council meeting area, connected at key locations to funnel the hot steam from the reservoir in the basement centered below the meeting area up and out to the rings under tiered townspeople seating area.
Dark-skinned Steam Technicians spotted the hall, making last minute checks on important pipe joints. As busy as they seemed, most spared some time to glance at Maewen as she stood awkwardly eyeing the broken floor wondering how best to get to the central area without breaking pipes or ankles.
At the center was the town mayor, as expected, arguing with a steam technician. It seemed as if someone had made a major mistake and there would 'unfortunately' be some set backs...

Zet emerged from the Ice Cave and looked into the distance. There he saw one of the famous lighthouses he had heard of. "So, this is where Mercury reins. Tales of the healers here have even reached Garoh in Osenia, maybe here I can find answers."
He walked up to the gates of the village Suimilitara. "Seems they're getting a steam upgrade. Might as well help while I'm here." Zet closed his eyes and focused on the closest person. Extending his mind he touched their mind to find where the most help is needed. She turned and walked up to him. "I sense your using psyenergy. Is there something I can help you with?" Surprised by this Zet retracted his mind. "Just looking for where the most help is needed with the steam project." She looked and pointed to the center of the village. "The town hall is where the bulk of the piping is going in." Zet nodded his head and thanked the young woman.
Reaching what he assumed was the hall Zet opened the doors and walked in.

Mael walked to the gates of Suimilitara and pulled the thick cowl down off of his face and tightened his goggles around his face. Being there always put him on edge and being able to see Psi always put him at ease. He ventured further into town and noticed that most of the activity seemed to be focused around the town hall. He walked over toward it and saw a large aura sparkling around the building. "Hmm..." Mael thought out loud to himself "there's a powerful Adept in their somewhere... Keep that in mind Mael..." Mael tugged on his gloves and kept walking to the town hall.

While still eyeing the precarious floor looking for a reasonably safe route towards the center, the town hall's large doors suddenly opened again bumping into Maewen's back and knocking her off balance. Teetering forward, she put a foot out instinctively but landed awkwardly on the slick rounded surface of a nearby pipe. "EEEK!" Maewen fell awkwardly to the ground, catching herself on her hands. A sharp pain shot through both her right wrist and the left foot that had slipped on the pipe. The girl bit back tears, her face already red from being startled and falling so embarrassingly. After catching her breath, she gingerly hoisted herself into a more natural position sitting on a solid bit of floor and inspected her injuries. Her ankle was twisted a bit, but the more serious one was her sprained wrist. Maewen took another breath in preparation, then she called silently to her psynergetic soul, summoning forth the ply manifestation. The tiny invisible fairy materialized on command and fluttered around Mae's throbbing wrist before enveloping it in a healing glow that seemed to suck out all the pain. Once finished, the ply fairy floated over to Maewen's left ankle to heal the minor strain there. Maewen massaged her wrist and then ankle a bit to make sure everything felt okay before dismissing the sprite and standing back up. Maewen blinked. Only then did she realize that she hadn't even considered what had caused her fall: the opening doors. Now, before her though was that very cause; a man had entered and stood before her just inside the hall. She had been so focused on her psynergy that she hadn't even noticed his appearance. "Oh... I'm sorry. Um.. did you say something?"

Zet looked down to the floor and saw the girl that he had knocked down. "Oh, I sorry." He reached down and helped her up. "Do you know where I can find the Elder. I'm looking for work and a skilled healer."

"ha... I, see." Maewen accepted the man's help and dusted off her robes, trying to avoid looking the man in the face for hers was still beet red. She glanced again sidelong towards the center of the hall where the mayor had resumed his 'discussion' with the faulty technician. "I guess you should talk to the mayor about work then, he's the.. um.. shorter one over there." Maewen suggested. Maewen thought about mentioning her ability to heal, but she was still in training and she was still rather embarrassed by her fall just now that she didn't have her usual courage. Instead she merely added, "My mother is the only skilled healer in town, since we normally just use water from the lighthouse fountain..." Before waiting for a reply though, the girl bowed to the stranger and took off towards the center, still uncomfortable after her spill. She just wanted to get her instructions from the mayor, do the steam tests and get back to her home so she could curl up and forget the day in her newest novel.

Zet nodded at the girl. "Thank you. And no need to be embarrassed, your application of Ply was quite good from what I saw." He passed by her and approached the elder and what appeared to be a Lemurian. "You are the elder of the village correct? My name is Zet. I am from the village of Garoh in Osenia."
(I stink at NPC dialogue, so if someone else could do the elder I would appreciate it.)

Today was the day! Never in the past one...two...three...oh it doesn't matter! For the first time in a long time he was deeply excited. So excited he actually bothered to get dressed properly for this particular outing into that inhospitable frozen wasteland that he now had to call home. slipping his feet into his boots, strapping them on tight, thrust his hands into his gloves and pulled then on just as tight, and was ready to burst out of his room...
...then removed his boots, put his pants on, THEN put his boots back on, made sure he didn't forget anything else, and dashed out of the room, the fat little djinn that was Dust poking his head out of the empty sheath on his friend's back: It usually contained his wooden sword, but today...well that was why today was so special!
Not only was he finally of age, but he also had saved up his allowance and done enough odd (very VERY odd) jobs ( some which he'd rather not talk about) around the town to have enough money to fulfill his lifelong dream: to own a real sword! Blowing past his his mother with energy she hadn't seen in quite some time, she naturally narrowed her eyes in disapproval: THAT always meant something bad.
Out in the open for the first time in some while, the young adept took in a deep breath of the cold air, something that often soothed him when he wasn't being barraged with chunks of ice from the sky, he made his way through the town at a fairly leisurely pace, savoring each and every step he took, You see grandpa! he shouted mentally to the heavens as he took a sharp turn around the corner of a local shop, Today I become a man; a true knight in shi- "Oof!" at that moment he'd collided with someone and found himself on his rear end on the cold pavement ( never fun). Looking to whoever he had bumped into, about to start apologizing, only he stopped and realized it was one of the usual bullies he'd encounter on a weekly basis: Butch he think this one was.
Jumping to his feet, Rayl backed up nervously, laughing and scratching the back of his head, before jumping to the side and sprinting past, being chased by Butch and his cronies to the shouts of "You're dead meat, twerp!"
Now, seeing as he stayed inside most the time, he had NO idea where he was going from here to the smithy ( which he ran past but that wasn't priority right now). He ran through alleys, past people walking around town, sidestepping people with hurried apologies as his pursuers chased behind. He reached a larger area, the Town Square, and was hopping to lose them in the crowd but...fate likes to throw the wild card too much, and he found himself slipping on some ice, falling onto his back, and sort of sliding for a bit, before coming to a stop.
He felt like a turtle for awhile, trying to get back to his feet, with his boots slipping on ice before he finally got up, dusted himself off, and was about to take off running...only to be tackled back to the ground by two people, his favorite book flying out of where he kept it at the front of his tunic, landing with a thud on the ground some distance away...
...such was a common occurrence.

Saito out at sea for days not knowing were to go. "I been out here for who knows how long. Why did I left Lemuria without a map" He said while leaning against the Stern of his ship. Then he looked toward east and saw a Lighthouse in a distance so he chance course and yelled "At Last, Land!" As he was sailing their he was attack by a small Kraken. It wasn't strong but it ran inside the ship to were the black orb was keep and as the battle continue it broke the pedestal that hold the black orb so the ship was on a crash course the lighthouse. When Saito Defeated the Kraken he went to the stern and steer away from the lighthouse landed north of a town called Imil. Without the pedestal to support the black orb he can't use his ship and the material to fix it are hard to come by. So he went to the town Imil to find anyone who know were he can find the material he needs. The mayor came to greet him and started to talk about why he was there. So he ask where he can find the material he needs to fix the pedestal and he replied he didn't know and couldn't help Saito as he was busy managing the town upgrades at the moment.

Mael turned his head suddenly at the sound of a loud thump on the other side of the wall he was walking past. His eyes widened in amazement and wonder as he saw a large brownish cloud radiating in his goggles. He felt his heart beat faster and his breath catch in his throat as he stared at it.
What is that?! Is it psi!?! I've never seen brown before!! I need to find out!!! Mael turned to the wall and vaulted up on top of it to see a few people ganging up around one in a brown tunic. He jumped down from the top of the wall and his heavy boots slammed into two of the gang members as he landed. He didnt seem to notice he was standing on them, or that the other people didn't look too pleased about this, as he leaned in closer to the one who was radiating Psi.
"Hmm... your psi is so much denser to see through... and it seems rather static in its shift and flow..." Mael murmured to himself as he got uncomfortably close to the one in the brown tunic. Suddenly, he felt a strong hand clasp onto his shoulder.
"What do you think you're doing standing on my buddies?" Butch said as he tightened his grip on Mael's thin frame. Mael looked over his shoulder and saw no psi coming off of Butch.
"You have no psi," Mael said as he turned back to observe Rayl, "so I have no interest in you whatsoever." Mael pulled a hidden string in his sleave and a great discharge of psi burst out of his cloak, knocking Butch off of him and the others to the ground.
"Let's get out of here!" someone shouted and they ran off. Mael stared back at Rayl and snapped his fingers.
"Earth Adept!" Mael said triumphantly as he pulled Rayl up to his feat and dusted him off. He then presented his hand and smiled broadly, "Mael Coalpepper, psi researcher and inventor! I shall be observing and doing research on you for the time being!"

"What's the matter, Shutters? Too scared to fight back?!" Butch laughed, and gave the Earth Adept a punch to the gut. Rayl, in turn, was punched the gut, and kept from stumbling back because of the grip of his bully's two lackys. This was a common occurrence. Butch being the righthand man of the town's Bully. The Boy from Vale's three adversaries were probably a year younger than him, not to mention not as strong...
...So why didn't he fight back, exactly? Two reasons actually. The first was that he had this odd mentality...He didn't see this trio of ruffians as bad people: merely misguided. His grandfather had always told him to only raise his wraith and justice upon evildoers, and thus he saw no reason to harm them...
The second reason? Someone had just landed on top of him and the other two, knocked Butch to the ground, and sent the trio running. Groaning as he was pulled to feet and dusted off. The stranger, apparently named Mael, held out a hand and flashed a smile. Rayl neither shook the hand, nor did he smile back. Not only had this man just attacked three innocent people, but he'd also just said he wanted to do 'research' on him...Rayl wasn't entirely sure what that meant, but he wasn't about to find out.
Holding a hand out angled towards the ground, palm towards the sky. He closed his eyes for a moment, before swinging his hand upwards. To those who could not see psynergy, what happened next was a spray of dust and snow flying upwards, making a hazy wall between himself and the stranger researcher, but to Adepts a glowing hand had dug it's way beneath dirt and snow and sent them skywards.
Once this happened, Rayl the Squire turned on his heels and bolted down the streets: No way was he going to be researched like some sort of...researched person?
All the while he forgot that he'd left his book on the sidewalk.

The elder turned his head and looked at Zet. "Yes, yes. Work I can do for you, a healer will have to wait. There seems to be a ruckus outside. See to that." Zet nodded. "Very well." He headed outside in time to see a person eminate a psy-pulse from his coat. Never seen a psy technic like that. Zet walked up to him. "Are you the cause of all this?"

The commotion outside piqued Maewen's interest, and she craned her neck trying to get a glimpse of what was going on as the man, Zet she recalled him introducing himself to the mayor, exited the hall. However she was late as it was, and had the mayor not continued conversing with the Leumerian, she knew that she'd have been admonished as such. Besides, she'd hear about it soon enough. Probably Butch and his insufferable crew of idiots stirring up trouble. The doors closed and the cacophony outside of Maewen's psynergy sensing range, she was blind to the event. Glancing back at the mayor though showed that he was getting increasingly upset with the hapless steam technician. Deciding the mayor was busy enough to not miss her for now, Maewen turned around and fought the hall doors open just long enough to slip back out. Outside, "pthfooey!" Maewen promptly inhaled a mouthful of dirt and snow. Squinting and feeling out with her psynergy, she sensed the vague residue of earth psynergy in the vicinity. An Venus Adept? A steam technitian perhaps? Maewen thought to herself, before inhaling more dust and deciding that enough was enough. The mercury adept cast out her power over as much of the town square around her as possible, grasping all the snow particles she could with it, and squashed it all back onto the ground. The snow bits pulled most of the dust with them and effectively quashed the cloud cover. Able to see once more, she spotted a confused looking boy who looked a few years older than herself by one of the walls to the east, Zet only a few steps further out the door than herself. Oddly enough though, what caught her eye after that was a book, laying on the ground on the sidewalk near a large scar in the ground. She wanted to go investigate it, but felt her knees suddenly buckle a little and leaned back quickly to prop herself up against the hall doors. That last stunt had taken quite a bit out of her, and she wasn't investigating anything until she could catch her breath.
