Hankey code has been going on for a long time as a system (originally by gay men) to get non-straight folk to recognize each other.
During the gold rush it was said that gay men would wear bandannas (essentially) to show that they were gay. The side that the knot was on determined if they were a "top" or "bottom." In the late 19th century/early 20th century there was the use of handkerchiefs or pocket squares to indicate if a person was gay. I forgot exactly what the code was then...like matching the pocket square with something?
In the 1970s flagging came about and people have been using it since. Different people are into different things or might have a preference for the evening. Wear a bandanna in your back pocket to find somebody with the same preferences.
