I have a few questions due to what I've been thinking on lately. Due to these, I'm having a hard time thinking about what's the best route to go regarding my Sonoka and what to-do about his 2.5 gallon if I get him a 5 gallon tank....lol!
I currently have one beautiful blue HM Male Betta name Sonoka in an all-glass 2.5 gallon setup with a special water filter and air-pump valve for less-turbulence of the water. I only keep the water heater in his tank in the colder months due to how hot it gets during the warmer months.
Anyways, after I made his water as less-turbulent as possible he seems bored and only hangs out in one spot his tank unless you put your finger up to the glass or show him his food/ feed him. There's no sign of him being sick or anything like that, but I'm thinking about maybe getting him a bigger 5 gallon tank so that he'll have more room to explore. My question is I guess, that if I do put him in a bigger tank, what should I put in there to occupy him as far as decor goes/ setting it up? I was thinking with a bigger tank maybe a fake hollow log or something? Currently he has a few small rocks, a pagoda, three tall silk plants and 2 small silk plants.
I was also thinking that if I did do that, I'll have my 2.5 gallon to get another maybe smaller Betta for, since Sonoka's about 3 inches now. If I doe this as well, would it be mean to set up the tanks side-by-side so they could safely interact, given that I can put a divider between the tanks if they seem too stressed seeing each other? "Obviously, if they both seemed to stressed after two to three days of trying this I'd move the tanks away from each other.Another thought was maybe getting a few male guppies for the smaller tank instead of another Betta but I've read that they usually get lonely if you don't have 6 or more. So. if I went with guppies, how many could safely stay in a 2.5 gallon tank?
Thanks...

Glab to hear you got him a bigger home! =D Some Bettas really like to move around and might get sad in smaller tanks. That said, I had one in a 1 1/2 gallon (untill I could get something bigger), and he was a lasy-butt and didnt really care how much room he had, he just chilled in his plants, even after I put him in a 3 gallon lol
You can do all kinda of fun thins with a 5 gallon, so get whatever catches you eye, but oviously fits in the tank lol
I have a hollow tree stump thing that I got at WalMart (I also have the big one too, for my 20 gallon), and Mister really seems to love. Plutto has the Pagota from PetCo, and he likes to go up inside the roof of it, or squeeze through the little holes in the rocks on the bottom. But the one that all my Bettas have loved the most so far, is a small log that I also got from WalMart. Its cut in half long ways, with some silk plants glued on it, with some fake rocks coming off the side. All my Bettas really seem to love hiding places that are long and low to the ground. Some people even use hampster tubes, because they're cheap lol Other then that, they like plants to sit on that go near the surface so they can rest in them if they are feeling lazy.
They also like alot of things to do, so maybe buy some extra decor, and put it away, then switch the tank around every now and then, to keep things fun 3nodding
And I believe pics are in order mrgreen

Pics where a great idea! Thanks...^_^ I just put him in there tonight and he's all over the place!!! Lol! Due to this it was hard to get some good pics because most were blurry. Anyways... here is a few of my best ones. xd
Anyways... the log is a good idea. I'm thinking about getting a small one as well next week when I get my check. I think I'll place it kinda sideways in front of the pagoda. Plus... If I decided to go with trying guppies as possible tank mates, if Sonoka allows, How many do you think would work without overcrowding the five gallon? I was thinking maybe six males because they are community fish.

What a cutie! I'm glad he likes is new home =D
I would skip the Guppies. Bettas are slightly psychotic, and most will think a Guppy is another Betta. Besides that, 6 Guppies is enough to stock a 10 gallon, and way to many for a 5. If you really want to try it, maybe just get two really small ones, maybe even get young females, as they are less flashy.
When fish are listed as a "community fish," all's that means is that the fish is non-aggressive, and will not pick on other fish (for the most part). A fish that likes to be with a group of its own kind are "schooling fish" (Tetras, Corries, Danios, Barbs, ect).
If you want something fun, I would suggest a Mistery or Apple snail (just make absolute sure it doesnt get over 2 inches). I will say they poop alot, though, so you would have to do at least 1 50% water change every week.

Okay..thank-you. I'll possibly skip skip the guppy thought then. I mainly just want to see if his mentality might tolerate another fish in his tank with him. I know it all depends on the Betta and usually doesn't work though. If I do get a snail, would I need to quarantine it? Plus, can they carry any diseases as well to another tank? I know if they were kept with other sick looking fish in a tank I wouldn't by one. If they do, what diseases would I have to look for and how? I would think it's a possibility.

You can probably put another fish in, but you'll want to stick with something small that doesn't school or have flashy fins. Snails are a good choice, you may also want to look into African Dwarf Frogs, bettas usually get along with them and they don't need a lot of space.

Snails can indeed transmit diseases to fish, but the one you should be most watchful for it ICH. Snails are not afected by the disease (they arent affected my many diseases actually), but they are certanly carriers of it, if they are in infected tanks.
ADFs are good too, but if you have a really grouchy Betta, he might get annoyed at it when it comes up for air lol

Okay.... Thankyou. I thankfully have the items needed just in case I bring home one that carries the disease and that does answer my questions. Thanks you guys sooo much. ^_^ I think I'll set up my 2.5 as a quarantine tank for now just in case and maybe get an Apple Snail. I've always been fond of them but have never owned one. The only reason I wouldn't get a Dwarf frog is because the hood isn't completely sealed shut in the back and I'd hate to have him find his way out because I have cats.
Neyways.... After I'm done firguring out what works for Sonoka or not, then I'm going to look forward to another Betta for my 2.5. My Kim-A-Kun said if I get another one that she's going to name it Mazda...LMAO! I still need to get some more silk plants, decor, and Mini Nano-Filter first before I do anything as far as a new Betta or Quarantine tank goes. Thankyou...^_^

Thankyou...^_^ PetCo sells these really small air pump driven filters that are pretty much sponge filters. They are made for the 3 gallon Kritter Keepers, and are pretty cheap. I think PetSupermarket has them too! They are really neat. I think I might go get one lol

If that's the case, don't get a snail. They love to climb out of the tank and get lost and die.
