THE BIG INCOMPLETE BOOK OF FAIRYTALES A big leatherbound book. Its cover is worn and its pages yellowed, like many have turned and enjoyed them. It has that comforting smell of an old book as you turn the pages. Some parts look like they are missing or torn out. Even whole stories! It looks like the book gets updated and depleted at the hands of students all the time, and thus, has no proper author.

~The little mermaid (European)~ Once upon a time, in the realm of merfolk, there was a little mermaid. She was a delicate beauty with the sweetest voice in the kingdom. She loved tp spend time in the underwater garden with her sisters. A worn marble human statue particularly fasctinated her. As the girls grew into young ladies, they were allowed to ascend. The older sisters talked endlessly about the humans and how theu navigated huge ships on top of the waves. One day, the little mermaid took her first swim to the surface. There she spied a handsome prince on a grand sea vessel. But her fascination was disrupted when clouds began to rumble and the calm waves grew into large swells. The ship rocked helplessly before it snapped in two. The mermaid caught sight of the handsome princes slowly sinking down into the depths below. She knew humans could not survive underwater, so without hesitation, she dragged him back to the surface and brought him to shore. There he lay on the sand, unconscious but alive. The mermaid treated him tenderly and yearned to stay with him, but as humans were approaching she reluctantly returned to the sea. From then on, the mermaid could think of nothing but the prince. The little mermaid decided to visit the sea sorceress in hopes of finding another way into the human world. The sorceress was surrounded by all manner of foul underwater creatures. “I know what it is you seek!” She hissed “You want to rid yourself of the fish tail in exchange for human legs. That way, the prince will fall in love with you, and you will obtain the immortal soul of a human.” The sorceress laughed as she brewed a concoction and poured it into a vial. “This is yours at a price! Are you willing to give up yoru voice to walk among humans?” The princess was quivering, but her desire to be with the prince was stronger than her fears. She let the sorceress cut out her tongue before she was sent away. “Remember,” The sorceress called “once you drink the potion, you can never return as a mermaid. And if the prince marries another, you will dissolve into sea foam the very next day.” The mermaid drank the potion, which caused her great pain as her tail began to shed. She nearly fainted as she floated to the surface and washed up on the shore. The handsome prince came to her aid and tenderly brought her inside the castle. She was given the finest of silks and the choicest of fooda. The little mermaid was graceful and sweet and enchanted the young prince with her demure beauty. She could not speak, but the prince adored her regardless and promised that he would always take care of her. News arrived that the prince was to sail to a far-off land. His parents insisted that he should marry a princess of renowned beauty and intellect. The prince had the little mermaid accompany him on the long journey. He had little interest in being with anyone else. But when the prince set eyes on the exotic princess he was overwhelmed with her great beauty and charm. Soon the two fell in love and declared they would be wed, leaving the little mermaid heartbroken. Fear gripped her every waking moment as the wedding day drew near. She kenw that by losing the prince, she was doomed to become sea foam. The prince and princess, being very fond of the sweet girl, made the little mermaid their bridesmaid. But through her smiles, she felt nothing but dread as they exchanged vows. After the wedding, everyone went on a boat for the reception. When the married couple retired to their chambers, the little mermaid cast sad eyes on the sea. Suddenly, her sister surfaced. “Sister, we’ve come to save you. We gave the sorceress our hair in exchange for this dagger. Plunge it into the princes heart before sunrise and let the blood spill onto your feet. You will then change back into a mermaid and be able to rejoin us. Hurry!” The little mermaid took the dagger and made haste. She slipped into the couples room and raised the dagger over the prince. But as quickly as she raised it, she lowered it again. The princes life is worth more to me than my own{/i] She tearfully thought. She went back to the deck and tossed the dagger into the sea. The first golden rays of sunlight touched the little mermaids gentle face. With a sigh, she threw herself overboard and dissolved into foam. “Goodbye my darling” She hear herself whisper as she floated gently away.

~The frog prince(German)~ Once upon a time, there was a king who had a beautiful daughter. One day, the princess went to her favourite spot in the deep wood. There, by a well, she loved to toss her ball up in the air and catch it. But one day, she missed it, and it fell into the well and sank. The princess sat by the well and wept until a small voice interrupted her piteous sobs. “What seems to be troubling you princess?” The princess looked in the direction of the voice, btu she only saw a loathsome frog. “My ball has sunk in the well!” She sighed. “Do not worry princess, I can fetch your ball.” He offered ”But what will you give me in return?” “Anything your heart desires,”She said “You could have jewels, fine clothing, even my crown…” “None of those things interest me.” Interrupted the frog. “I want to be your companion and eat from your golden plate and sleep in yoru royal bed.” The princess, desperate for her golden ball, readily agreed. hes only a frogshe thought He would never really be my companion The frog dove into the well and surfaced with the ball. The princess snatched it and ran, ignoring the frogs pleas to honour their bargain. The princess soon forgot about her amphibious encounter and was about to eat her dinner when a strange sound came from the door. The were a squishy knocking noise. “Princess, let me in!” Cried an unexpected visitor. The princess ran to the door and saw the horrid frog staring up at her with his googly eyes. She slammed the door and returned to the table. “Who was it?” Asked the king “Was it a frightening creature like a troll?” He chuckled. “No father, it was a frog.” She answered. “Why would a frog be calling you?” asked the king. The princess relayed the story about the frog and how it had retrieved the ball in exchange for a promise of companionship. “And honor it you must- a promise is a promise!” Stated the king. The princess let the frog in and sat back down for dinner. “Princess, lift me so that I may sit with you.” Requested the frog. At first the princess refused, but her father, looking at her sternly, reminded her to keep her promise. So the frog was placed on the chair, and much to the princesses chagrin, was elevated to the table, nibbling from the princess’s golden plate. The frog filled his belly while the princess sat there in disgust. “Princess” Said the frog “Carry me to your room so that I may lie on your bed and sleep” Seeing the scrutinizing looks from her father, he princess gingerly picked up the frog with two fingers, carried him upstairs, and dropped him on her bedroom floor. “Princess, place me on your bed as you promised you would, or I shall be forced to inform your father of your discourteous ways.” The frog demanded. The princess felt her blood boil as she grabbed the frog and threw him at the wall. When the frog fell to the floor, he transformed into a handsome prince, for he had been under an evil spell which could only be broken at the furious hands of a princess.

~The snow Queen (European)~ Once upon a time there were two best friends named Gerada and Kay. They were poor and lived in attics adjoined bya small rooftop patio. There, they filled a box with soil and created a beautiful little garden with a rosetree in the middle. When winter came, they would sit by their frost covered windows and try to see each other from across the way. One evening, as Kay looked out the window, he saw a large snowflake fall into the flowerbox. It grew larger and larger until it morphed into an ice woman. She looked at Kay and beckoned him to come outside. But Kay remained indoors, recoiling in fear from the window as an icy fear gripped him. With the return of the spring, the children enjoyed working on their patio garden. But then Kay felt a sting gin his eye, and the more he rubbed it, the worse it got; it was a splinter from a mirror that had come down from the goblin world and planted itself in his eye and his heart. Gerda came over to comfort her friend, but Kay lashed out, kicking over their garden box and yelling “Those toses are worm-eaten and ugly!” “Stop, Kay. I thought you loved our roses!” Cried Gerda. But he continued his strange antic before leaving her with the mess. From then on, things were not the same. Kay was spiteful and teased Gerda incessantly. When he wasn’t making fun of her, he poked fun at people in the streets below. Much to Gerdas disappointment, the passing seasons did not bring about a positive change in Kay. Instead, he grew even more cantankerous and mean-spirited. On one snowy day, he walked past Gerda and marched to the square to where some boys were tying their sleds to farm wagons. Kay was lost in the mischief when a sleek white sleigh pulled up beside him. There sat the snow queen, looking straight at Kay with a seductive stare. She was dressed in white, and her eyes like frosted diamonds. Kay, spellbound by the mysterious beauty, tied his sled onto her sleigh and held on for dear life as they flew swiftly through the blustery air. Kay cried out as stinging sleet pelted his face, so the snow queen stopped and entreated Kay to sit by her side in the enchanted vehicle. With a calm, assuring voice, he helped melt his fears as they sped on. Then she kissed him on the forehead, causing a burning cold that penetrated him to the core. But when she kissed him a second time, he forgot all about who he was and why he was there. Gerda became worried. The other boys had seen Kay led into the woods by a grand white sleigh. But he didn’t come out again. After months of searching, everyone gave up and went back to their lives. But Gerda visited every day, holding out hope that she would find her friend. There she cried sad tears until the voices of the swallows told her that he was alive and lost somewhere in the northland. She found a boat by a riverbank and begged the river to take favourite shoes in return for taking her towards her friend Kay. The river carried her downstream till she came to a magical looking shore filled with cherry trees and flowers. An old woman in a wide-brimmed flowerhat saw the girl and pulled her boat in. The old woman was delighted to have a little girl visit. She invited her into her house and surreptitiously removed all the memories from Gerdas mind as she combed her long blonde hair. She soon forgot about Kay. Meanwhile, Kay was imprisoned in the snow queens castle, paralyzed by the ice of the cold creatures enchantment. He spent his days in the corner, spelling out the word ETERNITY with mirror-like chunks of ice. .... ...

~Little Red Riding Hood (French)~ Once upon a time, there was a girl named little red riding hood. She had to take a basket of goodies across the forest to er ailing grandmother. Her mother wrapped little red riding hood in her hooded cape and warned “Remember, do not stray from the path. Go directly to Grandmas house.” As little red riding hood was walking through the forest, out jumped a wolf from behind a gnarly tree. Little red riding hood was not frightened in the least, because the crafty beast spoke kindly to her. “Where are you going?” Inquired the wolf. “Hello wolf, I’m going to Grandmas house.” She answered glibly. “Hmm… and where does she live?” Asked the wolf with a sparkle in his eye. “Its through the woods and directly over the hill,”Pointed little red riding hood. “Why don’t you go pick grandma some flowers?” Suggested the wolf. Little Red Riding Hood looked at the beautiful flowers that spread across the forest floor. She skipped off the forest path to gather them. Meanwhile, the wily wolf ran to grandmas house and knocked on her door. He disguised his voice as little red riding hoods and tricked the old woman into letting him in. The wolf tiptoed inside and sprang onto the unsuspecting grandmother. He gobbled her up with one swallow. Then he put on her cap and gown that he found by the bedpost. When little red riding hood finally arrived with a bountiful boquet, the wolf cleared his throat and told her “Come in, child, I’ve been waiting for you.” Little Red Riding Hood thought her grandmother sounded strange, and when she saw her, she thought she looked strange, too. “Perhaps its her illness.” She thought. “Grandmother, what big ears you have.” “The better to hear you with, my dear.” “Grandmother, what big eyes you have.” “The better to see you with.” “Grandmother, what big arms you have.” “The better to hug you with.” “Grandmother, what big teeth you have!” “The better to EAT you with!” And before little red riding hood had time to gasp, the wolf had devoured her and smacked his lips in delight. Now, after a heavy meal like that, the wolf grew sleepy and fell into a deep snooze. A huntsman who was passing by heard a loud snoring and decided to see if the old woman was okay. When he came into the house, he saw the swollen bellied wolf lying on the bed. The hunter, guessing that he had made a meal out of grandma, took scissors and cut the wolfs belly open. With a squelch, out fell Little Red Riding Hood and Grandma, frightened but alive. Little Red Riding Hood quickly gathered rocks from the yard and refilled the wolfs belly with them. When the wolf started to rouse, he tried to get up but teetered back and forth because of his rock filled belly. When he tried to get up again, he lost his balance and fell dead to the ground.

~The Legend of Aldery (Gaian)~ Once upon a time, there was a man who lived in a cottage in the forest. He was a very nice person, however he had an obsession with one day living in a castle and becoming king. Out in the forest while chopping wood one day, he heard a whisper from the darkness in the trees. “Who is there?” He called, running over. There he found a creature with a snake body and a female face, and the creature couldn’t speak. He reached out to to the wretched thing, and helped it, taking it home with him. Over the coming days, the creature learnt to talk, and listened as the man talked about his hopes and dreams. It offered him a deal, if he would marry the creature, it would give him the castle and help him become king. The man hastily agreed, and they were wed the next day. The cottage transformed into a castle, and the ceremony was attended by all the nobles of the land. The man and the creature were bonded for life, and the man got everything the creature promised him. Eventually the man got bored with being king, and talked to the creature once more. “I wish to be able to command the plants and animals, as they are my subjects too!” He said eagerly. The creature nodded and smiled “I can grant that, but you must cut off my tail and wear my skin.” The man eagerly agreed, amazed. He hacked off its tail and wore the snakeskin pants with pride, telling the birds and bees across the land to pander to his every wish. Eventually he realized that he did not control what the animals wanted, and as soon as he turned his back , they would revert to what they personally wished to do. He soon tired of this controlling power, and came to the creature once more. “Creature, I wish to control the souls of those in my kingdom” He implored to the shriveled thing. It nodded and beamed at him “I can do that, but you must cook and eat the rest of me.” The man was dubious but agreed, feasting on the creature that night. At the end of the meal, he suddenly found himself able to control the souls of those around him. He took delight in this at first, then he began to feel strange. The pants he was wearing begun to sink into his skin, piercing his flesh with their tightening scales. His stomach rumbled and became discolored, his arms stuck to his sides, and his heart seemed to stop beating in his chest. When the transformation was complete, he found he had become just like the wretched creature he had married. The man was cast out of the castle by the horrified servants, and sent to live in the woods. There he lived out the rest of his days, in the dark and damp corners, hiding from sight.

~The Dolphin Witch~ Once upon a time, there was a witch who lived in a lovely house by the sea. Every night she would go out and talk to the sea creatures in the moonlight. She began to fall for a lovely dolphin man, and spent her days weeping as they could never marry as a dolphin and wife! She searched many libraries for anything which could help, and found nothing. In her darkest hour, a beast in a cloak knocked on her door and offered to help her. “First you must cook and eat me, then from my skin you may make books which can be filled with the information to fix any of your needs.” The woman nodded, wiped her tears, and slew the beast right there, taking the body inside and eating him for dinner and hanging out the skin to dry. The next day she made a stack of paper and stretched a portion of the skin around it. “I wish for the ability to create.” She whispered to the skin, which strapped to the paper and filled it with knowledge. That night, she created a dolphin body for herself, and dove into the ocean with her lover, heading off to ask his parents permission to marry. The dolphin parents knew something was not right with this dolphin female, so they declined. The witch swum back to shore and spent the day crying, wondering what she did wrong. There was still skin left over, so she stretched some over another stack of paper and made another wish. “I wish for the ability to control.” She whispered to the skin, which sunk into the paper and filled it with writing yet again. That night, she went down to the dolphins parents in her dolphin body, and forced them to agree to the marriage. Her dolphin lover saw what she was doing and got frightened, running off into the watery depths. The witch swum back to the surface, distraught yet again. After spending the day crying about her lost love, she noticed some skin was still hanging there, leftover. There wasn’t much left, but she stretched some over another stack of papers, wishing that she could capture her dolphin lovers heart once again. “I wish for the ability to capture.” She whispered to the skin, which shuddered as it warped the paper and filled it with the ability to capture things. That night, she got into her dolphin body and forced her lover to reveal himself. As soon as he appeared, she used the ability to capture, but it backfired! The dolphin mans heart was sucked into the book, killing him instantly. The woman swum to the surface, covered in blood and eyes full of tears. She threw the books down in disgust and looked at the tiny piece of skin left. In her rage, she grabbed it and tossed it into the ocean. “Without him, I wish for chaos!” She cried angrily at the world. The skin warped and shuddered as it flew through the air and fell into the sea with barely a splash. A fantastic creature emerged from the ocean and upon seeing it, the witch cried tears of sadness and grieving. She transformed into a dolphin permanently and swum away with the beautiful creature as company, wishing to forget her old life and mistakes forever.
